  Hello
I have managed to split the desktop profile to gnome and kde submenus.
The result can be found in kde-crazy overlay (not in layman) [1]
I splitted every desktop/ folder i found. The following issues raised
though: 1) I didn't touch the hardened and selinux directories although
they do contain a desktop folder. Should I proceed in those or not?
  2) Some mips/ subdirs don't point to targets/, so I guess the split went
to /dev/null. So I asked ssuominen who suggested to skip the mips
directories, and I reverted. (Edit: ssuominen just committed changes in
  mips profiles in tree).
  3) There were no desktop dirs for bsd/prefix etc.
  4) Also take a look at how I splitted the USE flags (with ssuominen's and
yngwin's suggestions) and propose your corrections plz. For example, I
don't really like the firefox flag in kde, and I'd suggest a -firefox
  (ugly, I know) in kde's make.defaults

Please Please Please Please Please TEST / REVIEW (especially the arch
  teams plz)

I'll give three days max for the suggestions here etc, and then I'll
proceed in creating the news item. So I guess it will be committed in a
  week max. Thanks

I attached the news item, please review. Meanwhile, I'll create docs
 patches.

Also, I'm CCing hardened as my No.1 question was not answered. Please do.
 Thanks

 PS. Please test it

News item commited, also added note to KDE guide and proposed note for GNOME
FAQ. I didn't find anything relevant about profiles in xorg guide so I skipped
it. I'll commit this change this Friday, 26 March

@ Docs Team, do you want a handbook patch? I don't think it is needed, but

But that doesn't mention that users may wish to package.mask it, to avoid
having it on their systems at all. That's what /I/ was suggesting in
/this/ thread, that a news item (presumably that one) should mention the
package.mask option.

That really does seem to be about the best compromise, given the situation
as described so well in this thread.

[gentoo-dev] bug-wranglers queue is large

2010-03-23 Thread Jeremy Olexa

Given that the b-w queue is over 200 bugs and some have not been wrangled

Could everyone spend 5 minutes wrangling 5 bugs? (or more if you are

I'm going to grab this one and ask how is Gentoo going in terms of fresh

are understaffed. But I imagine somehow that there is less people
joining us now a days compared to a few years..

I'm currently guiding a friend to potentially join Gentoo in the future.
My plan is first to prepare him for Arch Testing, since it was also my
entry point on Gentoo. I would like to hear your experience and ideas

I'm confused by the above paragraph. I had to spend a longer while to
see that it really means if you want to use eselect-python to manage
your python3 configuration, pass the --python3 switch. Before that I
wondered what is the meaning of COMMAND and ARGUMENTS. Would be nice to
 make it more clear.

This paragraph is probably not needed for average users, so I will remove it.

Title: Python 3.1
Author: Arfrever Frehtes Taifersar Arahesis arfre...@gentoo.org
Content-Type: text/plain

Revision: 1
News-Item-Format: 1.0

Python 3 is a new major version of Python and is intentionally incompatible
with Python 2. Many external modules have not been ported yet to Python 3,
so Python 2 still needs to be installed. You can benefit from having Python 3
installed without setting Python 3.1 as main active version of Python.
Currently you should not set Python 3.1 as main active version of Python.
When setting it becomes recommended, a separate news item will be created
to notify users.

Although Python 3.1 should not be set as main active version of Python,
you should run python-updater after installation of Python 3.1. By default,
modules, which support both Python 2 and Python 3, are installed for both
active version of Python 2 and active version of Python 3, when both Python 2
and Python 3 are installed.

It is recommended to use a UTF-8 locale to avoid potential problems. Especially
C and POSIX locales are discouraged. If locale has not been explicitly set,
then POSIX locale is used, so you should ensure that locale has been set.
Problems occurring only with non-UTF-8 locales should be reported directly
to upstream developers of given packages.
See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/utf-8.xml for more information about UTF-8.

[gentoo-dev] misc packages up for grabs

2010-03-23 Thread Jeremy Olexa

I will be moving these to maintainer-needed in a few days. I no longer use
them and have little motivation to fix incoming bugs. Don't bother to ask,
just feel free to change metadata.xml to yourself.

Thanks,
Jeremy

 app-admin/bcfg2
Has a proxy maintainer that I haven't heard from in quite some time.

 app-arch/makeself
No longer use. No updates and nothing to do for this one.

 app-emulation/fuse-utils
 app-emulation/fuse
 app-emulation/libspectrum
Rarely need to do any work. Has a proxy maintainer.

 app-text/pdf2oo
No longer use. No updates and nothing to do for this one.

 dev-python/skype4py
 net-im/skysentials
No longer use. Could use some love. Allows you to SMS from skype.

 net-misc/pytvshows
No longer use.

 sys-apps/kexec-tools
No longer use. Has a herd but could use a dedicated maintainer.

 sys-apps/preload
No longer use, a few open bugs.

Are there any written rules somewhere on what can / should / must not be done
