On a server system (which uses as-needed), I encountered two packages (apr-
util and mysql-python) only linking against libmysqlclient_r.so.

There's no point in deprecating anything.
I find it unnecessary to introduce additional complexity here and
adding obscurity algorithms like gost sounds really bizarre and

And I believe these challenges are one of the reasons the old attempts
to have a signed Gentoo never went anywhere. I'm glad we have some form
of signed Gentoo now, even if it relies on some centralized
infrastructure.

decades of warning before a break becomes practical.
Having just one hash is simpler and using a well supported one like
SHA512 may make things easier than using something that's still not
very widely supported.
