[gentoo-user] Problems installing some parts of kde 3.4
Hello all, I installed KDE 3.4 on my machine (mostly using the single packages not the meta packages). Most is running fine, but I cannot install some parts (ark and kde-i18n). When I try to merge them I get the following error: >>> emerge (1 of 1) kde-base/ark-3.4.0 to / >>> md5 files ;-) ChangeLog >>> md5 files ;-) metadata.xml !!! Digest verification Failed: !!!/usr/local/portage/kde-base/ark/ark-3.4.0.ebuild !!! Reason: Filesize does not match recorded size >>> Please ensure you have sync'd properly. Please try 'emerge sync' and >>> optionally examine the file(s) for corruption. A sync will fix most cases. Of course I tried to resync, no change. The filesize of kdeutils matches the one listed in the digest, MD5 matches as well. For the kde-i18n it is exactly the same. Can anyone give a hint what to do? Thanks PS: Another small "problem" I do not get my multimedia keys to work. I selected my keyboard type in control center. Is there anything else to do? I got them working ages ago and am not sure where to do anything else now. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Any deleted/altered files get replaced on the next --sync anyway. Having said that. My copy of the file indeed matches the manifest. So either you need to re --sync, delete the file and re --sync, or try syncing from a different mirror.

Hi Ryan, Do you need a GUI (graphic interface)? If so, I like using Ark, as Paul pointed out; It is really simple and support a large array of archive types. If not, using the tar command on a shell can be faster. To do so: tar -cjf archive.tar.bz2 Creates a bzip2 archive tar -xjf archive.tar.bz2 -C Extracts from the archive If you change the j parameter to z (i.e. tar -czf), you will use the gzip program. In a related way I've never stopped to look at /usr in the process of doing an install. I have an old Mac Mini that I've been trying to get Gentoo running on recently so in the middle of my install this morning I stopped after untarring the stage-3 tarball and before untarring the portage snapshot and found that /usr/portage doesn't exist at that point. Does this suggest that I'm actually free at any time to rm -r /usr/portage and just untar the current snapshot? Other than distfiles and the overhead of downloading all that stuff again is there anything in /usr/portage that once erased would damage the machine? I can always get most of distfile from other machines around here so it's really a question as to whether portage and emerge build anything in /usr/portage that cannot be recreated without much trouble. Thanks again, Mark

On 7/20/06, Alexander Puchmayr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: The problem came when I wanted to INSTALL the packages on the target machine, where portage seems to ignore the VIDEO_CARDS variable from /etc/make.conf for some reason. Because it uses the VIDEO_CARDS variable from the binary package. In other words, the VIDEO_CARDS variable of your build system does not match the target system. As Randy said, you cannot change the useflags (and VIDEO_CARDS are a kind of useflag) of a binary package. A quick demonstration: My normal xorg-x11 merging: carcharias src # emerge -pv xorg-x11 [ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 USE="-3dfx" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -magictouch -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev nv nvidia vesa -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -fglrx -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 -imstt -mach64 -mga -neomagic -nsc -r128 -radeon -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vga -via -vmware -voodoo" 0 kB Since my binary packages were built on this system, using the binary package is the same: carcharias src # emerge -pv -k xorg-x11 [binary R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 USE="-3dfx" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -magictouch -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev nv nvidia vesa -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -fglrx -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 -imstt -mach64 -mga -neomagic -nsc -r128 -radeon -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vga -via -vmware -voodoo" Now "simulate" a system with different VIDEO_CARDS by adding fglrx: carcharias src # VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev nv nvidia vesa fglrx" emerge -pv xorg-x11 [ebuild N] x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.26.18-r1 USE="-acpi -doc -opengl" 23,160 kB [ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 USE="-3dfx" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -magictouch -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev fglrx* nv nvidia vesa -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 -imstt -mach64 -mga -neomagic -nsc -r128 -radeon -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vga -via -vmware -voodoo" 0 kB So it recognized that I added fglrx, and wants to add x11-drivers/ati-drivers. Now let's try that with the binary package, that now does not match my "target" system: carcharias src # VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev nv nvidia vesa fglrx" emerge -pv --usepkgonly xorg-x11 [binary R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 USE="-3dfx" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -magictouch -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev nv nvidia vesa -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -fglrx -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 -imstt -mach64 -mga -neomagic -nsc -r128 -radeon -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vga -via -vmware -voodoo" See, no fglrx and no merging of ati-drivers, even though fglrx is in my VIDEO_CARDS. Portage found a solution that satisfies all constraints, so you should let it proceed. Did you run emerge with -v to get the above? That looks like portage is doing it's usual -v thing which is to core dump to your console in the hope that maybe you can figure it out and you are willing to play the game called "let's find out what portage thinks it means today!" I don't understand why those blockers are marked hard, as portage found a solution. The blocker lines are really telling you why portage wants to upgrade your libinput and evdev drivers - the current ones won't work with your current drivers. Which is all totally pointless, as newer versions of everything are available and you want a full update. There's very little point in software going to great lengths to tell you why it won't keep old versions when you explicitly told it to not keep old versions :-) > > thanks in advance, > allan > > [nomerge ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4-r2 > [nomerge ] media-fonts/font-daewoo-misc-1.0.3 > [nomerge ] x11-apps/bdftopcf-1.0.5 > [ebuild U ]x11-libs/libXfont-1.5.2 [1.5.1] > [nomerge ] x11-apps/xdm-1.1.11-r3 > [ebuild U ] x11-apps/xconsole-1.0.7 [1.0.6] > [nomerge ] app-office/libreoffice-5.2.3.3-r1 > [nomerge ] sci-mathematics/lpsolve-5.5.2.0 > [nomerge ] sci-libs/colamd-2.8.0 > [ebuild U ]sci-libs/suitesparseconfig-4.2.1-r1 [4.2.1] > ABI_X86="(64%*) -32% (-x32)" > [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-3.20.0 > [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps-3.20.0 > [nomerge ] gnome-extra/gnome-characters-3.20.1 > [ebuild U ]dev-libs/libunistring-0.9.7 [0.9.5] ABI_X86="(64%*) -32% > (-x32)" > [nomerge ] media-video/gnome-mplayer-1.0.9 > [nomerge ] x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-symbolic-3.12.0 > [nomerge ] x11-misc/icon-naming-utils-0.8.90 > [nomerge ]dev-perl/XML-Simple-2.200.0-r1 > [ebuild U ] dev-perl/XML-LibXML-2.12.800-r1 [2.12.100] > USE="-examples% -minimal%" > [ebuild U ] www-client/firefox-45.8.0 [45.7.0] > [ebuild U ] www-client/chromium-57.0.2987.98 [56.0.2924.76-r1] > USE="system-libvpx%* -component-build% -gconf%" > [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-3.20.0 > [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-core-apps-3.20.0 > [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.20.2-r1 > [nomerge ]x11-drivers/xf86-input-libinput-0.24.0 [0.19.0] > [nomerge ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2 [1.18.4] USE="-debug%" > [nomerge ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.19 [1.18-r1] VIDEO_CARDS="-ark% > -i915% -i965% (-newport) -sis%" > [ebuild U ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0 [1.8.3] > [ebuild U ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216 > [2.99.917_p20160621-r1] USE="-tools%" > [ebuild U ] net-misc/wget-1.19.1-r1 [1.18] > [ebuild U ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.19 [1.18-r1] VIDEO_CARDS="-ark% > -i915% -i965% (-newport) -sis%" > [ebuild U ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.10.5 [2.10.3] > [nomerge ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.19 [1.18-r1] VIDEO_CARDS="-ark% > -i915% -i965% (-newport) -sis%" > [ebuild U ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-libinput-0.24.0 [0.19.0] > [ebuild U ]x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2 [1.18.4] USE="-debug%" > [ebuild U ] x11-apps/xauth-1.0.10 [1.0.9-r2] USE="{-test}" > [ebuild U ]dev-libs/libinput-1.6.2 [1.4.2] > [nomerge ] net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.14.5 > [ebuild U ] x11-libs/cairo-1.14.8 [1.14.6] > [nomerge ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4-r2 > [ebuild U ] x11-apps/sessreg-1.1.1 [1.1.0] > [nomerge ] x11-
[gentoo-user] WinZip and 7z encryption

You would have to unmerge kdeutils which also contains programs you might need. If you're using the KDE split ebuilds you can use 'equery d ' (app-portage/gentoolkit) to see what installed packages depend on . For example, Konqueror is needed by Kdesktop and Amarok among other things, so you probably don't want to unmerge it if you need either of them. Simply unmerging a package that is needed by some other package is not sufficient as it would be pulled back in when you next run 'emerge -D world'. KWallet only depends on kdeutils-meta. If you want to get rid of it unmerge kdeutils-meta and add the packages pulled in by kdeutils-meta to the world file (/var/lib/portage/world). You can find the names of these packages in the kdeutils-meta ebuild: RDEPEND=" $(deprange $PV $MAXKDEVER kde-base/ark) $(deprange $PV $MAXKDEVER kde-base/kcalc) $(deprange $PV $MAXKDEVER kde-base/kcharselect) lirc? ( $(deprange $PV $MAXKDEVER kde-base/kdelirc) ) [...] So you would add lines such as these: kde-base/ark kde-base/kcalc ... in the world file for each package you need and unmerge the ones you don't need. Be carefull with those useflag conditioned dependencies as in the case of kde-base/kdelirc which only gets installed if lirc useflag is activated. > Also, in the case of a fresh install, how can I choose > what KDE installs? I use the 'Details' view mode in Dolphin, presenting files in a list with columns showing Name, Size, Modified, Permissions, etc. When I right-click with the mouse placed carefully on an archive's name not previously selected (i.e. not highlighted) the Extract submenu shows up, just as expected. However, when I do the same with the mouse placed on any other columns or indeed on anywhere else than the name itself of the archive file, then the Extract submenu is nowhere to be found. I suspect with the mouse hovering over the file name, the .rar file extension is identified by Dolphin and the corresponding file type relevant Extract submenu is loaded. I prefer to buy cables with the same connector type as the port they are meant to fit in. Additional electrical contacts between cable and port introduce another interface with the possibility of wear, tear, oxidisation, electrical resistance and eventually failure. So, if your hardware has a mini display port and you're buying a new cable, it makes sense to buy it with a mini display port connector on one end of it and on the other end to come with a connector to suit the hardware port you intend to plug it into. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

The USE flags used by xorg-server are [ebuild N] x11-base/xorg-server-1.2.0-r3 USE="dri nptl sdl xorg xprint -3dfx -debug -dmx -ipv6 -kdrive -minimal" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics -acecad -aiptek -calcomp - citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -evdev -fpit - hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -microtouch -mutouch -palmax - penmount -spaceorb -summa -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx radeon vesa -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -epson -fbdev -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 (-impact) -imstt -mach64 -mga - neomagic (-newport) -nsc -nv -nvidia -r128 -rendition -s3 -s3virge - savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb (-sunbw2) (-suncg14) (-suncg3) (- suncg6) (-sunffb) (-sunleo) (-suntcx) -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vga -via -vmware -voodoo" 0 kB Thanks in advance! [gentoo-user] excess x11 drivers
I posted some output in anther thread concerning update world (Subject: How to fix a hefty (emerge) blocking problem) Someone noticed I had too many x11 drivers installed and suggested I set the /etc/make.conf VIDEO_CARDS variable (which I never have set before) I figured out I have an nvidia card so set VIDEO_CARDS="nv" Now with my emerge -vuDN @system @world complete I'm unable to start X. [gentoo-user] Kde Issue
Hi there, I have just used the split ebuilds install from KDE. I have 3.4, and am having a few issues. It starts up fine, but as soon as I right click the normal desktop, it and the Mac OSX style desktop menu are blanked. The desktop goes black, icons are removed. The menu's "file","window", etc dissappear. The desktop does not respond to any clicks. If I open up a QT program, like Konsole, the menu at the top, does work normally, but I still have a black desktop. Any ideas? Thanks! Ian PS> I may have not emerged something I need to. All the valuable data files are elsewhere in /var and all of portage can be downloaded at any time. $PORTDIR/local/layman can also be downloaded at any time. Re: [gentoo-user] Noah's ArK
Hi If it's only for Python 2 packages, it's easy with "virtualenv", I've done it for multiple independent Trac installations, each with a different set of plugins. You still have to keep the Python 2 base packages on the system. If it's for 32 bits packages, you can isolate them in a chroot, following the Gentoo guide [1]. I remember having used this to install binary packages like Adobe Acrobat when multilib was supported only with 32bits binary packages (I don't remember what made it necessary). If the chroot is mounted at system start, you can define menu actions in your desktop environment to launch commands inside of the chroot. You may need to bind mount your home directory or other data directories inside of the chroot to make them visible to these programs. The chroot solution can also work for Python 2, and it's not limited to 32 bits : you can create the chroot with a 64 bits stage 3 tarball. [gentoo-user] No more xorg upgrade?
Hello, I've recently synced. emerge -up world do not want to upgrade xorg-x11 to 7.0. Only upgrade from 6.8.2-r7 to 6.8.2-r8 is printed. Before this sync, the xorg-x11 wants to be upgraded from 6.8.2-r7 to 7.0-r1. Previous sync I did shortly after modular xorg becomes stable. I did not update xorg yet nor did emerge -u world. It seems to be portage bug, isn't it? Normal "world" update: $ emerge -up world | grep xorg [ebuild U ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r8 [6.8.2-r7] USE="dlloader*" When merging directly xorg-x11 it want to upgrade to 7.0-r1: $ emerge -up xorg-x11 | grep xorg-x11-7.0 [blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9 (is blocking x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1) [ebuild U ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 [6.8.2-r7] INPUT_DEVICES="evdev% keyboard% mouse% -acecad% -aiptek% -calcomp% -citron% -digitaledge% -dmc% -dynapro% -elo2300% -elographics% -fpit% -hyperpen% -jamstudio% -joystick% -magellan% -magictouch% -microtouch% -mutouch% -palmax% -penmount% -spaceorb% -summa% -synaptics% -tek4957% -ur98% -vmmouse% -void% -wacom%" VIDEO_CARDS="-apm% -ark% -chips% -cirrus% -cyrix% -dummy% -fbdev% -fglrx% -glint% -i128% -i810% -mach64% -mga% -neomagic% -nv% -nvidia% -r128% -radeon% -rendition% -s3% -s3virge% -savage% -siliconmotion% -sis% -sisusb% -tdfx% -tga% -trident% -tseng% -v4l% -vesa% -vga% -via% -vmware% -voodoo%" Also when merging some package (which depend on X) with --update switch, it also wants correctly to upgrade xorg to 7.0. $ emerge -up xscreensaver | grep xorg-x11-7.0 [blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9 (is blocking x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1) [ebuild U ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 [6.8.2-r7] INPUT_DEVICES="evdev%... For Python (any version), use wheels: https://pypi.org/project/wheel/ You would have to clone/download the packages yourself, and then run `python setup.py bdist_wheel` for them. This also ensures that you preserve compiled versions of the packages. As time goes on, these older packages will not compile against newer GCC/Clang versions without patches. Most popular packages already have wheels, although they might not have every combination built. For anything else, if it doesn't need stuff like hardware 3D acceleration, use a VM that retains the packages you want. This also leads into... If it does need native hardware access, use chroot and/or disk images (that you would boot into separately). I prefer to try and create barriers between 'production' (what I use everyday) and one-off things like some old game that only supports 32-bit. You probably want to retain old versions of toolchains (GCC, binutils, Clang, LLVM, etc) in case you need to build anything (built with -mtune not -march). Use Gentoo's binpkg format for this with the `qpkg` command. These packages can also be deployed on non-Gentoo systems but YMMV as you look for dependencies. I tend to keep old hardware around for running old software. You might want to do the same. A lot of older (much older) x86 support is being added to MAME everyday. This may come in handy in the future to preserve older versions of Linux distros and apps/games. https://www.mamedev.org/releases/whatsnew_0215.txt (search 386) Andrew

OK, that's pretty serious. Is the i810 module loaded? That's the video driver, or used to be Could you post the VIDEO_CARDS= settings in your make.conf file, along with emerge -pv xorg-server and lsmod On my wife's machine it was i810 before the upgrade. After the upgrade it seems to be i915. when I scan through Xorg.0.log it's using the i915 now, at least on her machine. Look in your log file and see which driver is says it's loading. If it's the 915 then either change your driver name in the config file or get rid of the config file completely. Hm. It's the same kernel (2.6.17-gentoo-r4) that worked well with xorg-x11 6.8. But I have had problems with udev and made a few /rules.d/ changes trying to fix things with ttys and ptys. The profile was very old. I did a synlink to 2006.1. I'm recompiling lots of stuff right now so when it's done I'll post again and detail and problems. James -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

RE: [gentoo-user] Modular Xorg 7 won't start with nVidia GeForce4 440 Go
I still cannot get X to start with the nvidia drivers. However, I did take (someones?) suggestion and tried both the "vesa" and "nv" drivers and they both "work". I say "work" because with 'vesa', I get a HUGE (i.e. low rez) screen = unuseable. And with the 'nv' I get the right resolution 1600x1200, but I get horrible frame-rates (glxgears). I tried to turn off the RenderAccel option with 'nvidia' but no joy. > -Original Message- > From: Daevid Vincent [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, March 30, 2006 5:53 PM > To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org > Subject: RE: [gentoo-user] Modular Xorg 7 won't start with > nVidia GeForce4 440 Go > > Richard, I want to thank you for your trying to help me on > this first of > all... > > > Have you tried doing a revdep-rebuild? > > Yes. My make.conf specifies VIDEO_CARDS="radeon", even though the automatically generated /root/xorg.conf.new specifies Driver "ati" in the "Device" section. Could this be a problem? The hardware is a. ATI Radeon all-in-wonder card. I tried replacing ati by fbdev just to get something working, but it just told me it couldn't find fbdev. Presumably this driver was not installed. Is the proper way to install this add in fbdev to the make.conf file: VIDEO_CARDS="radeon fbdev" or even VIDEO_CARDS="radeon ati fbdev" and then re-emerge xorg-server? [gentoo-user] Flash and Xorg 7.1?
I am not quite sure what went wrong. The result: http://www.math.princeton.edu/~wwong/20061600026.png whenever I try to access a website with flash content on it, the weird bands of messed-up stuff appear across the screen. It does go away after I close the offending tab, and performs some action that forces X to redraw. This started happening after I did a largish update after being away for 2.5 weeks. I think the problem is either with X, firefox, or flash, though it might go as far as the video driver. Any ideas? (Or, can anyone reproduce the behaviour?) [gentoo-user] KMail and KDE-plasma: a tale of woe
Hello lists, (I've sent this to both gentoo-user and kdepim-users as being relevant in both lists - I'm using kde-apps/kmail-16.12.0-r1 on Gentoo.) Well, I think I can finally emerge from a long battle to get KMail working. It's been uphill all the way - except for the frequent slips backwards to start abain. (I still don't have spell checking, as you see.) The main problem has been to recover archived e-mails, which sounds simple enough as I always keep a week of daily archives on a different partition, but it wasn't. The routine would go like this: 1. Set up KMail the way I like it, but on an empty message set. Save the arrangement for use next time. 2. Import the latest archive to a temporary folder. 3. Mark all the imported messages as read and move each folder into position under Local Folders. Delete the temporary folder. 4. Restore all the filters. 5. Cross fingers and fetch new mail (POP as my ISP doesn't offer IMAP). 6. KMail goes haywire. It re-creates the temporary folder and proceeds to fill it with duplicates of all the existing messages. All those duplicates prevent me from making a new archive until I clear them all out, painstakingly (yes, I did actually check several thousand e-mails for uniqueness). 7. Sigh. Delete the temporary folder again and have another go. Same result. 8. Give up and start again. Latterly, it changed slightly and sent all those duplicates to the sent-mail folder instead of creating a new folder for them. I think this coincided with me using a different archive file from the previous day. In the end I used Ark to extract the sent-mail directory from the archive and save it as a simple directory structure under "./.Local Folders.directory", then delete what I'd extracted from the archive. Then the import went smoothly in two stages: sent-mail, and everything else. I lost count of the times I rebooted durning the whole struggle, but it may well have reached 100. To omit a reboot was to risk the next step going wrong. That's compounded by having to start KMail twice each time, because the first time, it shows a progress bar stuck at 0% with no indication of what is supposed to be in progress. This may be connected with the segmentation faults I still see sometimes on shutdown; it's hard to be sure. Let's hope for some stability now. I still feel as though I'm walking on eggshells. -- Regards Peter

This happened to me, too. It was also reported as a bug to the Gentoo bugzilla. The mechanism for the bug was quite involved, but the solution was straightforward. That was to replace VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" with VIDEO_CARDS="radeon r600" in /etc/portage/make.conf. The "r600" bit is actually documented in the "Radeon" article in the Gentoo Wiki, though I suspect it is relatively new. If I were you, I'd check in that article that my card actually does, literally, need "r600", and not something like "r750". If this doesn't get your emerge working again, have a look at that bug report. (Search for "mesa" and look at the most recent bug it finds.) -- Alan Mackenzie (Nuremberg, Germany).
[gentoo-user] resolving blocks from sets

Portage usually has such problems when it needs to resolve blockers involving package rebuilds involving a subslot upgrade. It would be nice to see the output below the build list which usually gives hints how to manually resolve this. The two package blocking each other could then be first upgraded using # emerge -1a package1 package2 where one of those is the package which needs a subslot rebuild. This usually then pulls in the rest of the upgrades, at least partially. A subsequent "emerge -DNua world" then should work as expected. I think this is a bug in the dependency resolver. -- Regards, Kai Replies to list-only preferred.

[SNIP] > Ok, here's the requested Info: [SNIP] Apparently the above is expected behaviour when a package is masked (i.e. that no tree is printed). A deptree to explain the above would look something similar to: media-sound/xmms USE=arts media-plugins/xmms-arts kde-base/arts x11-libs/qt USE=opengl x11-drivers/ati-drivers That, however, isn't your problem. Your problem as suggested by Richard is xorg-x11-7.1 which requires a higher version of ati-drivers. Unfortunately I don't have a complete list of ebuilds that belong to X 7.1 but I believe at least the following do.. You'll have to add them to /etc/portage/package.mask. Alternatively you might of course consider trying a higher version of ati-drivers.. >=x11-proto/glproto-1.4.8 >=media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r1 >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-1.1.2-r2 >=x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse-1.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-input-void-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/synaptics-0.14.5-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-apm-1.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-ark-0.6.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-chips-1.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-cirrus-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-cyrix-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-dummy-0.2.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-fbdev-0.3.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-glint-1.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-i128-1.2.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-i740-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810-1.6.5 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-imstt-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.4.1-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-neomagic-1.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-nsc-2.8.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv-1.2.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.6.3 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-rendition-4.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-s3-0.4.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-s3virge-1.9.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-savage-2.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-siliconmotion-1.4.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-sis-0.9.1-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-sisusb-0.8.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-tdfx-1.2.1-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-tga-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-trident-1.2.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-tseng-1.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-v4l-0.1.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa-1.2.1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-vga-4.1.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-via-0.2.1-r1 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware-10.13.0 >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-voodoo-1.1.0 >=x11-apps/mesa-progs-6.5.1 >=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.1 -- Bo Andresen pgpkAW1yRZnTM.pgp Description: PGP signature

After making the proposed change, the mesa started to compile without problems. (But not finished yet!) This is quite strange, as I updated my system yet a week ago and everything worked well even with VIDEO_CARDS="radeon". Following alan's reply I let the emerge world update proceed and the build caused completed.
