I got down to the time zone part. When I try to run emerge --config
sys-libs/timezone-data I get this output.

Copying is just fine. The timezone-data ebuild will update
/etc/localtime for you on the next update, and replace the symlink if
you have one there. The reason, IIRC, being that /usr might not yet be
mounted during early boot.

Actually, I just got a checksum error emerging timezone-data as
well... Has anybody seen this?

that it was changed just recently. Make sure your timezone-data ebuild
is up to date and installed. In order to get an 2007 version, you might
need to architecture unmask it.

ht grumpy thoughts at developers who let packages into ~x86 with
completely broken deps. Hard mask that crap next time.
