Is it possible to disable the error rendering in a wms layer? Instead of the
white tiles printed with the error message can i set Geoserver to display
some transparent tiles?

Try setting exceptions to XML, won't return image tiles then, and any img's
your browser sources will be blank:
EXCEPTIONS=application/vnd.ogc.se_xml...
Otherwise your client is probably setting the exception format to inimage

I found out the reason for this persisting problem (Caused by:

organization has a sys admin to keep it up, and there's enough of us on this
list that just sending an email here should get us on it.

The first day it said something like we're temporarily down So I went on
and worked with some other issues.
Since then I've been working with other things and when I noticed today that it
was down I assumed (probably faulty) that it had been down since my last access.
