What do you mean by “better performance”? What are you measuring? How are you
measuring? What performance tuning have you done on your geoserver?
What are you really trying to do? Understand the implementation or just make
WMS run faster?

when you get that exception it means that GeoServer could not determine the
service or request parameter.
