Re: [Gimp-developer] Missing button to confirm some tool actions (usability)

Interesting observation, but does it make sense to have buttons in a place that (to my understanding) is supposed to be a monologue, i.e. just providing information; not offer interaction? Wouldn't it make more sense to have this button in the Tool Options? Well, the bug report was about having a button somewhere - anywhere. The suggestion to place it in the status bar (in the same place as the Cancel button that already appears when a plug-in is running) was just an idea, but certainly not the only way to solve this problem (assuming that we consider it as a real problem that has to be solved). Now, I know that we don't like more stuff in there, but imo that's the right place for such a button. Tool options should be reserved for options, not for actions. And indeed, we have too much stuff in there: most users already have to scroll in order to see all options. On the other hand, we already have some actions in there, such as Auto Shrink Selection (rectangle tool) or Create Selection from Path and Stroke Path (paths tool). So maybe we could add another button among the tool options. I don't like the idea of overlays that has been suggested by others (displaying controls over the image) and we should get rid of the annoying pop-ups, so for the moment I only see the following options: 1) put the confirmation button in the status bar, 2) put the confirmation button in the tool options, 3) ignore the issue and assume that all users will read the message suggesting that they press Enter. Other ideas or opinions are still welcome... -Raphaël ___ Gimp-developer mailing list Gimp-developer@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-developer
[Gimp-developer] Thankyou and Well Done to the Gimp Development Team
I know this isn't strictly developer talk, but I would like to say thankyou to the gimp development team. I recently upgraded my laptop to ubuntu gutsy, to see what it was like. It includes Gimp 2.3.18, and I would just like to say that is excellent, There are some really nice features that make it so much easier to use, such as the selection resizing. Keep up the good work! [Gimp-developer] ANNOUNCE: GIMP 2.4.0-rc1
Moin, we did it. It's not the final 2.4.0 release yet, but a first release candidate is now available from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.4/testing Changes in GIMP 2.4.0-rc1 = - further improvement to the Print plug-in - completed the color management functionality for 2.4 - store JPEG setting with the image and use them when saving as JPEG - further improved the rectangle tools, in particular handling of the fixed aspect ratio - added color profile selector widget - further improved the display quality for zoomed-out views This is probably the last mail I write before going on vacation with the girl I am going to marry tomorrow. I hope that you guys can manage to fix the remaining issues and roll out the 2.4.0 release while I am away. Our intention is to describe a usage scenario and brainstorm a possible interface for the tool, as well as possible enhancements for that tool. Once we have a solid description and mockup we'll back to this list to propose the changes to the developers, but not with a simple idea but with complete documentation of the case. Anyway, this work is intended for 2.6, so I think it won't harm anyone if we discuss this off-list and try to gather some fresh ideas.
