Clicking inside the cropped region also implements the action. It's
actually a feature I'm not sure I like because it deviates from the
rectangle tool's implementation of the same action - to hide the handles.
Well, I don't know if that's what the implementation is technically but
that's what it effectively does and it's what I use it for.

No, that's not what it does effectively. If applies the resizable selection
frame to the selection mask. In any other selection mode than replace, you'll
face the same problem with this behaviour as you now do with crop.

Yes, I suspected I was over-simplifying. Nevertheless, the ability to hide the
handles is very useful, maybe less so for selections but definitely for crops.
Is the ability to do this implemented in some other way. If it isn't, can we
consider adding it?

You could press and hold the mouse button within the cropped region --
the handles disappear while the button is down and when you release,
you are returned to the previous state.

same thing, to get a feel for how the crop might look. and it goes ahead and
performs the action before I'm ready for it to. Undo fixes the problem but it's
still annoying.

I like the idea of an accept button to the right or left of the status bar. I
don't think most users would think to look in the properties dialogue for the
action and there's really no other logical place for it to go. I seem to
remember buttons being in there for other tasks. I would presume that most
users
who don't know the keyboard controls aren't going to hide the status bar.

Actually, clicking when there is a pending rectangle does the same thing
for both; execute the tool.

You can confirm this by adding a rectangle to an existing rectangle with
the Rectangle Select Tool, (hold Shift before creating the second
rectangle), click (to execute), and click again.

You will not get second rectangle back, but a rectangle that covers the
entire selected area (which is a feature actually).

Interesting observation, but does it make sense to have buttons in a
place that (to my understanding) is supposed to be a monologue, i.e.
just providing information; not offer interaction? Wouldn't it make more
sense to have this button in the Tool Options?

Well, the bug report was about having a button somewhere - anywhere.

The suggestion to place it in the status bar (in the same place as the
Cancel button that already appears when a plug-in is running) was just
an idea, but certainly not the only way to solve this problem
(assuming that we consider it as a real problem that has to be solved).

Now, I know that we don't like more stuff in there, but imo that's the
right place for such a button.

Tool options should be reserved for options, not for actions. And
indeed, we have too much stuff in there: most users already have to
scroll in order to see all options. On the other hand, we already
have some actions in there, such as Auto Shrink Selection (rectangle
tool) or Create Selection from Path and Stroke Path (paths tool).
So maybe we could add another button among the tool options.

I don't like the idea of overlays that has been suggested by others
(displaying controls over the image) and we should get rid of the
annoying pop-ups, so for the moment I only see the following options:
1) put the confirmation button in the status bar,
2) put the confirmation button in the tool options,
3) ignore the issue and assume that all users will read the message
   suggesting that they press Enter.
Other ideas or opinions are still welcome...
