My trick for finding plug-ins and/or scripts in the menus:
Look in the 'menurc' file in your ~/gimp_home_dir
(this is a plain text menu dump)

Does gimp support GIF ?
If you are running gimp on windows, you must install the separately
available lzw to support gif.
