[Gimp-user] what is fisheye and what is eyefish ? (flame render plugin)

2010-01-23 Thread Cristian Secară
In the flame filer (Filters - Render - Nature - Flame) the fractal
type can be selected from a list. Among several types there are this
two:
Fisheye
Eyefish
Are these different things ?

In the French translation the first one is Grand angle (photo lens
type, I assume), while the second is Oeil de poisson.

In Spanish translation the first one is Ojo de pez, while the second
is Gran angular (photo lens type, I assume)

In German translation the first one is Fischauge, while the second
one is Augenfish.

??

Thank you,
Cristi

[Gimp-user] Complaint

2010-01-23 Thread Mickey B.
On 1/22/2010 9:48 AM, Deniz Dogan wrote:

It didn't take me long at all to become productive in GIMP and I'm
still learning! I'm in no way a professional, I mainly do web design
using GIMP (which can be a pain at sometimes because it doesn't have
 layer groups like Photoshop).

Try out different things, click stuff you have no idea about what they
do. At least that's what I did... Tutorials helped me very little.

What might work for one doesn't always work for someone else. To say: This
works for me or this doesn't work for me is setting a standard that cannot
apply across the board. Tutorials are needed for the masses in general because
for many, a starting point is needed.

That's how I learned how to use GIMP. I don't like tutorials myself.

I love tutorials as they tend to be rather helpful in realizing the potential
of a plug-in, filter, or script. Sure, experimentation is strongly
recommended, but to say what helps you should help everyone else, is a bit
over the deep end.

They tend to be rather specific, even though they are trying to teach
generalized techniques. I just experiment until I find something I like
and than I try to remember what I did so I can do it again. My favorite
tool right now is the fractal explorer.

My favorite thing is when someone else shows me what I can accomplish from
using various tools. Again, experimenting is a necessity, but I can admit
getting lost in GIMP for hours on end being in the experimentation mode.

 I have a good notion I'll never
become an expert at using it but boy, do I have fun[0]!

I'd go out on a limb and say that for most us beginners, GIMP SHOULD be
FUN.

And again, why not make it into a tutorial? I can honestly tell you that
thousands of GIMP beginners will appreciate your input in the form a tutorial.
And I am not being facetious about this.

Hi!

By figuring out the step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce the
problems and then file bug reports to bugs.gimp.org so the problems can
be fixed

Actually, it sounds like you're out of RAM and your computer starts
using the disk. This happens if you work with large images and/or have a
small amount of RAM. You might want to tweak the tile cache:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-using-setup-tile-cache.html

Select the part you want to copy, then Edit - Copy, then Edit - Paste
as - New Image

To select irregular shapes, try the Free Select Tool and the quick mask.

[Gimp-user] Evenly distributed zig-zag selection

Hi

I'm trying to make a zig-zag pattern selection in GIMP. By that I

How do I accomplish this in GIMP?

Thanksthat helped.

Here's what I did (using GIMP ver. 2.6.8)

1. Clicked Scissors Select Tool

2. Traced the outside of the object I wanted.

3. Clicked Edit - Copy

4. Clicked Edit - Paste as - New Image

[Gimp-user] GIMP crashing on memory allocation (WinXP)

2010-01-23 Thread scott s.
I'm trying to edit some large tiffs (620 Mb) and while slow it was going
OK. Then suddenly (nothing changed AFAIK) I start getting errors

GLib-ERROR* gmem.c:130 failed to allocate 16384 bytes aborting.

This was initially on GIMP 2.4.7 but I bit the bullet and installed
2.6.8 to see if that changed anything (it didn't). I take it that the
faulting module is libglib.dll which seems to have a version of 2.16.37
(I believe I had an older GTK+ but the GIMP 2.6 windows installer
updated it.)

This is on the Windows binary distribution. I am running on Win XP sp3
32 bit (x86) with 3 gb switch and USERVA switch set to 2540.. Looking
at my system when the crash occurs I see my physical memory (2gb) is
maxed out and also GIMP VM is 2 gb. I guess one question is does the
windows build of GIMP compile with LargeAddressSpcaeAware set, though I
suspect even if that was set in the binary it would still max out. That
doesn't explain why it seemed to be working and just now I have
problems.

I tried playing with the tile cache size option, but that just seems
to change how fast the error occurs. It seems that the tiff file open
plugin is completing and GIMP is either starting to render or at
times render is complete and I try to use a selection tool and then
the crash occurs.
