[Gimp-user] how to curve text ... ?

2003-03-15 Thread Dave Selby
Hi all, Ive been working with gimp1.2 for about 12 hrs so far, got the
basics, gradients, select, etc etc but I have a pressing project !

I have the text image I want, I generated it via Xtns, Script fu, logos. How
do I bend it ?

I need it to gently curve around the top of a photo.

Any help greatfully appreciated.
Dave

PS if its blindingly obvious I appologise in advance !!

I'm sending this privately because it seems like I post a link to
this every few weeks and I'm not sure how kosher it is to plug
one's own site on gimp-user all the time.

Anyway, I have a plugin to do this:
 http://www.shallowsky.com/software/cdplugins/

I don't know of any other way to do it (or I wouldn't have bothered
 writing the plugin. :-)

Many thanks, will have a play ...

This is what I did to test my answer before I sent it:

 Open the Gimp.
Create a new image (File-New), accepting defaults.
Right-click in image, select File-SaveAs. Note that GIF is greyed out.
Cancel. Right-click in image, select Image-Mode-Indexed, accept defaults,
OK. Right-click in image, select File-SaveAs.
Click on Determine File Type button, select GIF, save file accepting
 defaults.

 Worked fine.

If it doesn't work for you, I have no idea what the problem is :-(

Im concerned because in my determine file type, the part I can see ! I

That's odd. I see it when the image isn't indexed, but greyed out. It's
between GBR and GIH, as you'd expect. What version of the GIMP are you
using? I dimly recall that GIF isn't wasn't in all of them because of the
Unisys idiocy a few years back... but I could be completely mistaken on
that. If you built it yourself, it may be a missed compile-time option too,
 I guess.

 Regards, K.

I haven't loaded it yet but gimp1.2-nonfree has it built in ... It also has a
message ! .

Description: GIF support for the GNU Image Manipulation Program
This package includes GIF support for The GNU Image Manipulation
Program. These files are not freely available; their use is
disallowed by the UNISYS patent on LZW compression.
 .
Use at your own legal risk.
Enhances: gimp1.2

mmm kind of looks like its illegal to use, wouldn't be bothered but was
intending to use it for commercial work .

Any idea when the patent runs out !

Have a look at the following:
 http://burnallgifs.org/

It's verging to the extreme somewhat but it gives a lot of info.

I actually wrote to UNISYS asking about a license and was shocked to
learn that they wanted a minimum of $10,000 per year!!! Needless to say
 I'm using PNG's instead of GIF's.

There are good alternatives to GIF for commercial work, like JPG, PGM etc.
 depending on your application.

[Gimp-user] Modem escape sequence +++ query ?

2003-04-13 Thread Dave Selby
I am now the proud owner of a serial external modem, goodby winmodem with
depmod problems !

To cut a long story short, it dials, as it happens on demand, and talks to my
ISP AOK on the first attempt. When I kill pppd or my NTL ISP drops the line
all apears AOK except when I want to go back on line again.

The modem refuses to accept any commands ie ATZ, ATH1, ATDT
I assume this is because the modem is now in connect mode, I tried to put
it back in command mode with echo +++ /dev/ttyS0 in /etc/ppp/ip-down.d but
no go

debian:/etc/chatscripts#
debian:/etc/chatscripts# echo ATL1X1DT126308005190100 /dev/ttyS0
debian:/etc/chatscripts#

Modem dials AOK, responding to commands ... However now will NOT shut down,
the following does nothing, Have to power down modem then ATH0 ATH1 work AOK

debian:/etc/chatscripts#
debian:/etc/chatscripts# echo +++  /dev/ttyS0
debian:/etc/chatscripts# echo ATH0 /dev/ttyS0
debian:/etc/chatscripts# echo ATZ /dev/ttyS0
debian:/etc/chatscripts#
debian:/etc/chatscripts#

Any Ideas, Maybe I am just phrasing +++ wrong ?

Also does anyone know of a dumb terminal program that will let me see what
comes back from the modem ? I used to use one but cant remember what it was
called.

Many thanks
Dave

 You're being paranoid.

The files in /var/spool/cups are records that jobs were printed, not the
 actual contents of the jobs.

Did you try the MapObject plug-in yet? It's found in the Filters-Map
menu. MapObject allows you to map the image onto a number of simple
shapes. Spheres are of course among these.

[Gimp-user] Speeding up printing ...

2003-10-26 Thread Dave selby
Hello,

I run a system with ...
Gimp 1.2.3, Debian Woody, 700MHz PIII, Epson Stylus C60, Gimp-print driver
My machine struggles when I print high resolution images, the main
system culprits, from top are ...

print ... while gimp is processing the image ready for printing
epson ... while printing.
Both float around 80%-95% of CPU time, If I run any other apps the
printer starts pausing etc ...

Since Debian compiles for a i386 I have a PIII I have re-compiled
Gimp, cupsys-driver-gimpprint libgimpprint1. To my supprise this has
made no difference.

After ensuring that my processor is set to PIII in the kernel, I deleted
the packages then ...

apt-get build-dep x
apt-get source --build
dpkg -i .deb (generated from the previous command)
Has anyone any suggestions ?
