[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.6.1 from Macports, strange window behavior

2008-10-13 Thread Michael Hernandez
Hey all,

I have this strange issue with the latest GIMP - things from menus and
some child-windows (not sure if that's the right name for these, but
there are mini-windows that GIMP pops up to allow you to select modes
from a drop down, for example) are shown either off my screen or
behind a tool window. The problem is that I can't move the window out
of the way to get to the mini-window underneath, and I can't see
things sometimes that are off the visible area (sometimes things pop
up halfway out of the area and I can drag them back in).

I'm not sure if this is related to X11 or if it's a GIMP bug (or maybe
even a macports port bug, but since it builds and installs fine I
think the port from macports is the cause).

Is anyone else seeing this strange behavior? Is there something I can
do to fix it?

I am running GIMP 2.6.1 compiled from Macports on a macbook pro 15
with X 2.3.1

Thanks!

 Yes... read GPL License.

I have pixelmator - let me tell you honestly - it looks great, and
it's fun to use but it's no where near a GIMP clone. It simply does
not have all of the features, and is missing some basics such as
rulers, guides and a method of drawing (or performing other actions)
in a straight line.

It's a great piece of software that has potential - but it's very young.

My opinion is that if you can get it on sale, get it. I got mine in a
macheist bundle, which cost me something like $50 total and included
pixelmator, vector designer (another interesting yet young graphic
program) and a bunch of other stuff. Would I pay full price for it?
No. I hate to say that because I'm sure the guys that are working on
it could sure use the money - but it's just not ready. If I could get
a native OS X version of GIMP, I'd pay $60 for it in a heartbeat.

Works fine with Tiger, but all kinds of errors with dependencies when
I run $ port install gimp2

Try running port -selfupdate to get the latest macports

GIMP works just about fine here, though I've just run into a bug that
causes the save as dialog to crash when I try to save as the same
picture twice in succession (e.g. open BigFile.jpg, save as
OtherName.jpg, save as OtherOtherName.jpg causes a dialog to appear
with no buttons or text). Not sure if my bug is with GIMP or GTK or
what...

Re: [Gimp-user] gimp for webpage logo

2007-10-19 Thread Michael Hernandez
you need to save it as a gif or png. Also remember that not all
browsers support gif or png transparency properly (specifically
Internet Explorer).

I created a logo for a web page.

I did it by opening a new file, transparent background. typing the

But it does not come out with a transparent background.

I've tried various adjustments, such as copy visible, paste to new
file with transparent background. It looks transparent in GIMP, but
on the webpage it is not transparent.

Any ideas how I can get my logo to lose it's unwanted background?

 Thanks,
Helen, using SuSE 10.0, Gimp 2.2.10

Speaking of books, I have Beginning Gimp, which was published in '06

 Wha?

Actually that book was written based on a development snapshot of
GIMP. I find it to be a very useful book IMHO. I'm not sure how
relevant it will continue to be though, based on the fact that the
author really seems to have jumped the gun in regards to the GIMP 2.4
 release. [...]

Many users and developers were hoping for GIMP 2.4 to be released
around the end of summer last year. Alas, that didn't happen
because it took a long time to fix some nasty bugs, then it was
decided to include some new features because the release was not
ready anyway, then more bugs popped in, then it also took a while
to fix them, then even more features were added, even more bugs
were discovered and fixed, and so on...

It is not surprising that the authors of some books were hoping
for 2.4 to be released earlier. Maybe they were a bit too
optimistic, but I wouldn't blame them for that.

Now that we already have the first release candidate with lots of
nice features (and a few bugs that have already been fixed), we
are finally getting very close to the official release of GIMP 2.4.

That is great news! Now I just hope it hasn't changed so much that my
nice full color gloss beginning GIMP book is full of lies! :)
