The Win32 specific implementation of the webbrowser plug-in is just
plain broken then. It is of course supposed to call the default
webbrowser, that's the whole purpose of the webbrowser plug-in.

This is not at all about filetype association. GIMP help calls the
default web browser, so that's what you should be looking for. It
appears that Crimson is set to be the default browser on your system.

Actually this is not quite correct. GIMP simply tells Windows to
open the url, it does not specify that a web browser should be
used. Now, if the url had an extension of .html, then the system
default browser would be used unless some other handler had been
associated with the .html extension. But in many cases the url's used by
the help system are more complicated, e.g. ch03.html#gimp-tool-options-save.
It is not clear how Windows will react when asked to open such
a thing.

I have added a comment to this effect to the relevant bug report,

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158463

I don't see how a GIMP reinstall could solve this problem. GIMP
doesn't put the name of the browser application anywhere. All it
does is calling the function that I quoted here earlier. A
reinstall is not going to change that.

Did you ever have Crimson Editor associated as the default application to

I can't remember if html files has been associated to crimson. May be, but
now aren't associated. I haved tried tipical solution: unistall crimson,
gimp, look for crimson association in the windows register.

At this stage all I can think of is that windows might have different
associations for .htm (firefox) and .html (crimson) (or vice versa)

I know on occasion I've had completely different programs for .jpeg and
.jpg

I have not found a solution.

Hope we can figure this out.

Sincerely

Alan Horkan

2005-02-16 Thread Matthew H. Plough
The humor was a bit of a Microsoft programming inside joke. The command
that Sven mentioned is the command to open an HTML file with the default
associated application. Thus, it looks like you have Crimson Editor as
the default application set up to open HTML files.

I have several questions for you so that we can look at this further.
Although we asked a couple of them before, you didn't answer them. We
need this kind of information in order to help you out.

What happens when you create a file on your desktop called whatever.html
? Does it show an IE or Firefox icon? When you double click on it,
does it open in Firefox? What version of Windows are you running? If
it's 2000 or XP, what happens when you open My Computer, do Tools
Folder Options File types tab, and look for the HTML extension? What
is the opens with application? If you click Advanced, what actions are
associated with the HTML file type?

Hahaha! Very deadpan humor, well executed.
Do you know what call the Open With... dialog box uses to open files with
programs other than the default? I've been trying to figure that out myself
for a separate project. It would be very useful here -- either open the
page with the dreaded Internet Explorer, or look for a Firefox installation.

I would like to speak (write) english with the sufficient level to thank
adequately your effort. Muchas gracias.

I would try to answer your questions Matt:

What happens when you create a file on your desktop called whatever.html ?
Does it show an IE or Firefox icon?

Firefox icon. Now I like this browser.

When you double click on it, does it open in Firefox?

Firefox again. Gimp open Crimson in any user of the computer.

What version of Windows are you running?

XP with last patchs.

If it's 2000 or XP, what happens when you open My Computer, do Tools
Folder Options File types tab, and look for the HTML extension? What is
the opens with application? If you click Advanced, what actions are
associated with the HTML file type?

Firefox once time more.

Do you understand now why I'm confused?

Best regards.

There is a relation. When you double click on an HTML file, does it
open up in Crimson Editor? If so, then GIMP is opening HTML files in
the program associated with them instead of a browser. Certainly looks
