Hi,
First thing to do is make sure you have an alpha channel: right-click,
image, alpha, add alpha channel. If this option is greyed out, you
already have an alpha channel. Second, you select the region you want to
remove. You can use select, by color for this, or with the various
selection

Gimp is a bitmap oriented program, svg as far a I know is only for
describing vector graphics. If there is a tracing tool for gimp, that
could use svg, but describing images in svg doesn't seem to be a good
idea imho. Not that I'm a Gimp developer or anything :-)

When opening a file, selecting it in the open dialog and clicking
'generate preview', the file is not selected any more. So if you have a
