When you have your photo in Gimp, add a strip at the bottom by increasing the
length in CANVAS SIZE. See menu under image. I added 20 points. See image
attached
Put your text there (not easy in Gimp) and then flatten it. You should end up
with a white strip. See second image
Not that I can find.
As for only loading when you use the tool, that will slow you down tremendously.
A possible work around is to save the fonts you use frequently as presets in
the Text tool.
