Slackware is one of the oldest and most conservative Linux distros. Upgrading Gimp on Slackware has always been a frustrating proposition. The libraries keep changing for one thing. Happily Slackware-Current, which will be Slackware 10.1 when all the bugs are shaken out, has Gimp 2.2.2. Haven't
