So here goes now.

Actually, this is just a gettext bug, since it uses Format instead of the
Display Language setting from Windows' Regional and Language options.

[Gimp-user] Language setting Windows 7 and GIMP 2.6

2010-07-12 Thread meetthegimp.org
Hi,

I got a mail from a German in Saudia Arabia. He runs Windows 7 with
English as default language. He installed GIMP 2.6.9 and it comes up
in Arabic which he can't read.

He sent me a screen shot which shows the menus of his mail program in
the back behind the Arabic GIMP. They are in German, but he says his
system is running in English. Localisation Hell?

I haven't used Windows since 98SE, so I have no idea how to help him.
Any pointers?

You can set global environment variables through the system settings dialog of
Windows. Setting the localization variables (LANG, LC_ALL etc) to the desired
locale(s) should do the trick.

[Gimp-user] Language Problem

2008-12-17 Thread indebele
I just downloaded the GIMP and I got the localized version... in Chinese.

I can use the GIMP in Chinese. My Chinese is pretty good. It would
probably be really good for my language practice if I use the GIMP in
Chinese. I would prefer to use GIMP in English, however.

I have looked and looked and looked through the menus and I can't find
anything that says language options. Any pointers on where I need
to be looking?

Thanks.

Re: [Gimp-user] Language switch for ./configure

Hi,

On Monday 25 August 2008, John Culleton wrote:

They only use Gimp with reference to a single language. That said,
it would speed up configure and compile time if there was a switch
that specified the language to be used at that site. The
compile/install time and disk space needed for the many
 alternatives could be eliminated.

If I remember correctly, the common way to do this is to set the LINGUAS
environment variable at build time:

A way to save space on unneeded message translations without any
negative effects upon other NLS aspects is to set the LINGUAS variable
during the build. The contents of this variable should be a
space-separated list of two-letter codes of languages, translations to
which should be installed. E.g., to install only Italian and Spanish
  translations:

  export LINGUAS=it es

Programs compiled in such a way are fully usable in other locales, and
work correctly with user documents written in other languages. Just
messages from a program itself will be in English.

To install no translations, set LINGUAS to the empty value:

  export LINGUAS=

If the LINGUAS variable isn't exported, all available translations are
  installed.

Should work in GIMP. If it doesn't work, then you are free to fix it and
send us a patch.

Yes, but 98% of them, like - peple who download gimp for windows, or
Linux distribution users, fetch GIMP from a unified binary source
(either the gimp-windows binaries, or linux distribution binaries) ,
and these builds must be multilingual.

Your change would benefit the 2% whou buld gimp from source,a nd
even that is dobutfull - I myself use it alternatibvely in English
and Portuguese.

So... it is actually easier if you simply erase the .mo s you donṫ
want at the end of the make step.

You would have to translate the user manual to dutch. As far as I can
see (http://docs.gimp.org/), there is no dutch translation yet. That's
why the english manual is used as a fallback.

[Gimp-user] Language

2006-12-15 Thread James J. Roper
I am new to this, so please bear with me.

I live in Brazil, and use Windows in Portuguese, but would prefer to
have the GIMP in English. Of course, during installation, it opted for
Portuguese since that is the language of my operating system. So, my
question is, how can I make it speak English to me?

Thanks,

  So, my
question is, how can I make it speak English to me?

You merely have to create an environment variable and set its value to
en.

If you are using Windows:

set lang=en
c:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\GIMP-2.2.exe

If you are using Linux, I will assume you know how to set an environment
variable for the terminal shell that you prefer. :)

The language is set before the program runs, at system level. You
should set the LANG environment variable to your desired
language. With no language set, this should be C, which is
English.
