It sounds like it is something missing on your system. With SuSE 7.3

Are you possibly missing a package that was accidently not marked with a
 dependency?

:) I might... but how am I to know? Or how do i find out what package I could
be missing as long as I don't even know what packages I might need?

How did you install your SuSE system? YaST2? Have you made any major
changes in your system since installation?

It was installed with yast2 almost always just following the defaults... and
I have not done major changes yet...

As a SuSE user (etc.), this sounds to me like a SuSE problem. Did you
check the support database? (the suse one)

yes I did... the only thing I thought to be eventually relevant was the tip
to update the freetype2-rpm... did that w/o any visible impact...

I have in the meanwhile tried to start an xterm with the same long font
description from the text-tool dialog and it won't show the fonts either...
so it is not a gimp-issue, obviously...

But what I don't understand is this: How can I use those fonts in kmail and
how is the Gimp able to display the fonts correctly the text tool dialog, but
not able to use them at the same time?

(as a side note... what do you think of the gimp chapter in the
 applications manual?)

Unfortunately, I have never had the books for SuSE 7.3. The last release I
bought was 7.0 and I gave the applications manual to my mother after I set up
a Linux box for her...

I have found similar problem using Gimp 1.2.0 on Win98 with Adobe Type
manager. When both True Type and Type1 fonts are activated, I can see Type1
fonts correctly listed in the text tool, but font displayed as sample is
always the same (tries Gimp some font substitution?). When the TrueType are
deactivated, Type1 fonts work fine - e.g. I can't work by the same time
with both types of font...

...by the way: My Gimp seems to recognize all Type1 fonts as bitmap. Maybe
that's why scaling doesn't work - text size is always default (something
like 82 pts), and can be sized only with layer.

In other programs are these workarounds not neccessary, various experiments
with ATM settings did not have any effect.

Thanks for any idea

Petr

Great... :)

is there a list with more traffic?
Or is nobody using the Gimp any more? All the Websites seem to be totally
outdated... the plug-in registry is down... the online boards seem to be not
frequented at all...
What's going on?

PS: so I guess nobody here has any idea concerning my font problem?

2002-02-11 Thread Cruz, John J

I'll speak for myself. This mailing list is active but unlike some of the
Linux mailing list it tends to convey only GIMP related advice and not
unrelated news. Also I don't put question on this mailing list unless it is
specific. To be specific I exhaust all possibilities, net searches, and as
a newbie to GIMP I also read my two books.

The traffic is light to medium. I belong to one other GIMP mailing list and
its traffic is light. But both sites provide quality responses - just have
patience.

I thought my question to be pretty gimp-specific... it's a problem I only
have in gimp... and it is only gimp that displays not found-err msgs for
fonts that are working perfectly in other apps...

To be specific I exhaust all possibilities, net searches, and
as a newbie to GIMP I also read my two books.

I did and drew a blank... so I went and looked for a gimp-specific
mailing-list as a last resort...
