Netscape does not support png transparencies. It does support gif
transparencies.

As far as I know, Netscape does not yet fully support transparencies.

The PNG/alpha bug has been there in the previous releases.
This makes one wonder, what exactly the people at NS are
spending their time on. It is definitely NOT developing
HTML browsers!
If it was only one man who did the coding, I would
understand. But why won't he at least read the bug-reports then?

Netscape is crap. I doesn't work. I hate it.
If NaziSoft Internet Explorer was ever ported to Linux, I'd use it.

Sorry for the off-topic comment, but I cannot help it;
Netscape pisses me off.

Wrong. I then tested the image with IE 4.0 and the transparency
worked. I have IE on a windows machine for testing purposes only.

Unfortunately Mozilla is not a viable solution for the real world. It
is buggy as hell and fails to load all kinds of stuff, particularily
https, which in this day and age is a necessity.

Your friend must have been using the latest version of M$ IE (5.0)
because version 4 didn't support transparency. Netscape version 5
also supports transparency, and is available as an alpha-test
version from www.mozilla.org (Milestone 13 is the latest alpha).

But even if version 5 of the popular browsers do support transparent
PNG images, it might not be a wise idea to assume that everyone
viewing your pages is using the latest version.

Previous experience with transparent pngs indicates to me that Netscape
is brain dead when it comes to them. I spent a ton of time trying to
figure out what was wrong. I gave up and posted the image as is. A
friend of mine viewed it with M$ IE and happened to mention to me that
he really liked the transparency.

This appears to be a problem with Netscape on any platform. :(

I'd like to know how to do this as well. I find that Netscape 4.6 (Linux)
transparency works fine for GIF images. I've never been able to save a PNG
file (Gimp 1.0.4) with transparency because Gimp core dumps when I try to do
so.

Don't know about a Netscape plugin, but the new version of Netscape
(Mozilla 5) does support transparency in PNG files. It's up to
an alpha candidate (M13) version, so download it and give it a
whirl (www.mozilla.org).

Transparent png's and Netscape?

2000-01-28 Thread Alexander Werner Skwar

Hi!

How do I create a RGB png image which has a transparent background?
From http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png I understood (?) that I need to add an
alpha channel. So I clicked on Image->Alpha->Add Alpha Channel. Next I
selected the regions to be made transparent, and clicked on
Image->Alpha->Threshold Alpha. Okay, the regions are now as transparent
as I want them to be in gimp. Now I saved this image.
After that I wrote a real basic html file which uses this image with
. When I load this page in Netscape v4.7 I don't see
any transparency at all. Reading further on cdrom.com I found that
Netscape's alpha channel support is broken.
Is this still true, and are there any plugins for Netscape (Linux) that
add full alpha channel support?
