I'm not sure about the cause of the initial crash, but it sounds like
you might have been using a different file when the crash happened. Upon
re-launching GnuCash, it opened a different file from back when you had
that report opened and then closed GnuCash. (last saved state of that file)

too easy to click quickly when saving a file resulting in data winding up in

when opening the application can lead to the ‘forgetfulness’
I have lost all ledger and log files between 13 Oct 2017 and 15 July
2018. Unbelievably, they are also missing from my off-line back up.
