Film Festival of India, Neelam Kapur, has said that things are not yet in
order. She also said that vital communication links such as adequate

though the State government had been asked to provide these by 1 November.

THIS IS A MORE PLAUSIBLE STORY. Perhaps Samir even knows the name of the
friend whom he recommended to take a holiday in Goa all by his lonely self.
If this man[ Samir uses the terms 'he' and 'himself' to refer to his
'friend', lest Cecil should dispute the 'gender' of the friend later]. In
faxct , it is quite common talk on the beach. Surprising he did not offer
young boys or 'unnatural sex' [ Lewinsky or otherwise] or 'foreign maal'.
After the Tehelka expose on paedophilia in Goa,arrests of pimps and
prostitutes in Baina and Calangute, this is no longer news.In fact, one can
come across such touts at Yeshwantpur, Anandrao Circle, Tank Bund Road,
Residency Road, Shivajinagar, PCTC, Munireddypalya, Chickpet, Tharugpet,
K.R.Market, J.C.Road, K.H. Road, Lal baugh and other places in Bangalore if
Samir wants to do some investigations in his town of residence, Bangalore. I
can take him or his friend on a round when I am in Bangalore next. No point
dreaming about sex in Goa while one is a bachelor in Bangalore. Like the
Baina girls of yore, they also come on 'tours' of service for a long
week-end or upto six days at a stretch. As the say, seven days make the
whole weak.

The only unlikely offer from such a tout is Tout: To kya chicken, mutton,
fish ? Touts normally do not have a 'parcel' service for food[ the English
word]. Hindi is a common language used for domestic tourists by the Lamanis
on the beach. They do speak Kannada or Telegu or Marathi when needed.
English is reserved for the foreigners. Some even speak French and Spanish.
I have heard Lamani children speak at Calangute and at Ingo's SNB.

Tout: To kya chicken, mutton, fish ?
My friend: No, I am a vegetarian.
Tout: To kya ladki mangta hai?
 My friend: No.
Tout: Tumko drinks nahi mangta hai, chicken, fish nahin mangta hai, ladki
nahim mangta hi, to tum Goa aaya kyon?
My friend meanwhile had a walkman with him which was playing songs.
The tout asked to have a look at it, and listened to the songs.
They were some sad songs by Kishore Kumar playing.
Tout: Okay, to love break hua hai tumhara. Abhi humko samjha.
Fully satisfied about the reason, the tout left.
So, this is Goa's fun image.

Locked in combat at the top of the Primera Liga,
Barcelona and Real Madrid renew their rivalry at the
Nou Camp today in the most keenly awaited Spanish
derby for years.
For the first time in five seasons, there will be more
than pride at stake as the two sides go into the game
occupying the top two places in the table.
Leaders Barcelona lost their unbeaten record in the
league last weekend with a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis,
while Real closed the gap at the top to four points
thanks to a 6-1 thrashing of Albacete at the Bernabeu.
The Catalans, who will be roared on by a 98,000
capacity crowd at their stadium, have played some
sparkling attacking football this season, but know
that they will need to be at their very best if they
are to put one over their arch rivals.
You can't predict what will happen in these sort of
games, says midfielder Xavi, who has been the
standout player at Barca this season.
A lot will depend on who gets control of the ball,
but with the support of our fans we have to get the
three points and it would be fantastic if we could put
seven between us and Real.
The game will be given added spice by the presence of
African Player of the Year Samuel Eto'o, who joined
Barca from Real Mallorca at the start of the season
after Real decided not to use their option to buy him.
The lively Cameroon international, who has an
excellent record against Real, has been in
electrifying form this term. He leads the Primera Liga
scoring charts with nine goals and will be keen to
prove that his former club Real were wrong to let him
go.
Former Barca players Luis Figo and Ronaldo can be
assured of a hostile reception as they return to the
Nou Camp.
Real won 2-1 in the equivalent fixture last season,
their first victory at the Nou Camp for 20 years.

Style and swagger have returned to Stamford Bridge,
recalling Ruud Gullit's sexy football of a decade ago
and the strutting Chelsea side of the 1970s, the
trendiest in town.
It is not just that the southwest London club enjoy
riches beyond the wildest dreams of most teams
courtesy of billionaire Russian owner Roman
Abramovich.
Nor that they are sitting at the top of the Premier
League, having already coasted into the second round
of the Champions League with two games to spare.
Manager Jose Mourinho, who won the European Cup with
Porto last season and has settled into English soccer
with a self-assurance bordering on cockiness, simply
exudes confidence.
Yes I am even more confident now we can win the
title, he said after his side beat neighbours Fulham
4-1 last weekend, their third four-goal haul in as
many league games. That is not me being vain or
arrogant. I just feel it to be the case.
Before the game he even suggested that Chelsea would
win the title a week or two before the season ends in
May.
Mourinho's masterplan has been boosted by the arrival
of the season's Dutch revelation, Arjen Robben, who
has scored four goals in four matches since his debut
following a pre-season injury.
Deft touch
On Saturday, the 20-year-old winger's lightning speed
and deft touch turned the Fulham defence inside out.
Robben is one of the best players in the world. He
was simply awesome, Fulham coach Chris Coleman said,
describing the whole Chelsea performance as
breathtaking.
Mourinho and his management team are already looking
forward to fans' celebrations along Chelsea's
fashionable Kings Road next year - Chelsea's centenary
year and 50 years since their only previous English
league title.
It was here in the swinging Sixties and Seventies that
Chelsea players such as Peter Osgood and Charlie
Cooke, sideburned and kipper-tied, took to the clubs
and bars to glory in their victories, alongside film
stars and pop celebrities.
Celebrity support is still a feature of the club -
Oscar-winning actor and director Richard Attenborough
is life vice-president - but times have changed.
Now that Abramovich has poured hundreds of millions of
dollars into the club, Mourinho is under enormous
pressure to deliver heavy-duty silverware.
The odd FA Cup, League Cup or even European Cup
Winners' Cup may have delighted the good-time team of
the 1970s and the new international brigade under
Gullit and successor Gianluca Vialli, but Mourinho and
chief executive Peter Kenyon seek more enduring
rewards.
Kenyon's aim is for Chelsea to become the most
successful team in Europe, rivalling Real Madrid,
Manchester United and AC Milan, and to market the
brand globally.
It's about sustained success, he said last week.
Kenyon has a 10-year business plan that envisages
financial profitability, independent of Abramovich's
wealth, within five.
You can only have a successful football business on
the back of a successful team, he said. I don't
think you can reach that point without European
success.
European force
Mourinho has said he wants to settle long-term in
London. He is an ambitious man and building Chelsea
into a European force would fuel that ambition.
The Portuguese says he loved watching the FA Cup on
television as a child but his mission in his debut
season in England is to win Chelsea's first league
title since 1955.
He would also dearly like to lay his hands on the
Champions League trophy again.
Meticulous planning, commitment, discipline and team
spirit are the cornerstones of his campaign.
Laid-back may have described some of his predecessors
but it has no place in Mourinho's comprehensive
English vocabulary.
When Romania's Adrian Mutu behaved erratically his
boss ordered a drugs test which proved positive and
the £15.8-million striker was dismissed last month for
cocaine abuse.
Mourinho started the season with a disparate group of
admittedly talented internationals many of whom had
never played together and whose pre-season training
had been cut short by the European Championship. His
instincts were for control and defence.
While champions Arsenal went on a goal-scoring spree,
Chelsea ground out a series of 1-0 defeats and were
branded dull by football pundits.
His tactics have paid off. Chelsea's miserly defence
has conceded only four times in 19 matches and as team
confidence and awareness have grown the goals have
started to flow.
Mourinho and the fans just beginning to warm to him
might glance at last season's statistics before taking
too much for granted, however.
Under coach Claudio Ranieri, Chelsea occupied the top
spot for two weeks from November 30 before losing

India whip Thailand in opener
November 19, 2004 22:24 IST
Formidable India crushed lowly Thailand 50-29 in the opening Pool 'A'
match of the first ever World Cup kabaddi tournament, being held in
Mumbai, on Friday.

Playing aggressively, the Indians did not allow their opponents any chance
of settling down in a match where they led throughout.

The hosts led 33-14 at half-time.
India's skipper Sanjiva Kumar marshalled his resources magnificently.
Manprit Singh and Sundar Singh gave India an early lead with some
attacking play as the Asian Games gold medallists led 19-2.

However, Thailand fought back despite their captain Akkaradach Boonpang
being injured early in the match.

Anurak Boonsri and Wacharin Nootong played their hearts out to reduce the
margin at 23-14. However, the Indians lifted their game through Manprit
Singh, Shailesh Sawant and Ramesh

Kumar Sr to increase their lead to 33-14 at half-time.
In the second half the hosts won points at will.
Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh inaugurated the meet
while Indian Olympic Association chief Suresh Kalmadi was introduced to
the players before the start of the match.

Anurak Boonsri was declared man of the match.

A review of Gwynne Dyer's book.
Gwynne is a respected war commentator of CBC.
Interesteing reading.
=
Consider Gwynne Dyer's disturbing Future: Tense (McClelland Stewart), an
ultimately more convincing explanation for Iraq. You don't have to invade
oil-producing countries--at a cost of US$120 billion and 1,100 American
lives (and counting)--to get oil, Dyer points out, You just write them a
cheque. Most OPEC economies are so dependent on foreign exchange that they
peddle their oil to anyone; in fact, half of Iraq's oil exports went to the
U.S., of all countries, in the month before Bush's invasion.

Dyer finds the root of the assault in what he calls the neo-conservative
project, a half-crazed manifesto for American world domination. While its
more radical proponents are found in the Republican party, there is
considerable support across American public life for the idea that the U.S.
should seize the unipolar moment--the respite between the implosion of the
Soviet Union and the inevitable rise of China--to cement its currently
unchallengeable global superiority. That means the U.S. must break free of
the multilateral restraints it helped foster after the Second World
War--including the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty--and find a new
justification for the immense military might built up during the Cold War.
Rogue nations and the terrorist attacks of 2001 providentially provided
the pretext. And in the electrified post-9/11 atmosphere, Iraq practically
nominated itself as a means of showing the world that all the rules had
changed.

The danger in the situation is far greater than a possible surge in Islamist
terrorism, according to Dyer, who insists: The United States needs to lose
the war in Iraq as soon as possible. Even more urgently, the whole world
needs the United States to lose the war in Iraq. If the Americans are still
there five years from now, still engaged in their adventure in
unilateralism, what's now left of international institutions will be
shredded. The UN will start to die, Dyer warns, as the other great powers
start to take the old, bad steps to protect their interests that they took
in the generation before 1914. Inherently dangerous alliances and arms races
will follow.

Dear Sirs/Madams,

Subject: Meeting of the Minds - LOK ULOITAT- FUDHARI AIKTAT

You are well aware of the existence of the Goa Su-Raj Party. It was formed
to correct and/or to help bring about a reformation in the inconsistencies
and anti people agendas of the leading National as well as Regional
political parties of Goa by giving teeth to the people, the voters, to
have a say in the matter in their own governance.

An initiative in this regard will take place at CARITAS, St. Inez, Panjim on
20th. November, 2004 from 4.00 to 6.30 P.M. wherein an absolute departure
from the traditional public meetings will be observed by not having
guest/star speakers but allowing the people from the audience to speak on
pre-selected political topics for a duration that will be decided by the
moderator/s to give equal time for all speakers. Therefore, it goes without
saying that those persons who are interested and or eager to put up their
view points must indicate their willingness to do so, so that a list may be
drawn-up to allocate equal slots for all speakers. Time permitting, open
slots shall be given to the members of the audience to put across their view
points.

This has not happened in Goa as far as our knowledge goes. It has been
observed that political parties have had their own respective agendas. And
these agendas are forced on the people whether they agree or not. Mostly,
these agendas are secret and unwritten, wherein the people at large are
innocently drawn into the web of the vicious circle without their knowing or
being conscious about it by creating an artificial and/or made to order
hype.

Through this initiative at CARITAS, people will be able to give voice to
their inner feelings so that the powers that be listen and be guided
accordingly to draw-up their agendas.

Per se every single citizen of the state is a law abider. Those who disobey
the laws know that there are reprimands and punishments to be suffered. But
still some do break the laws knowing that they will get away through the
inconsistencies of the laws, rules and regulations and the manipulative
exercises indulged into by the political class. Therefore, 90 to 95 percent
of the people of the state, irrespective of their faiths, beliefs or
political leanings, respect just laws. But the same people must have a
voice in objecting to those laws which are highly unjust and manipulative in
nature which get the sanctity of the rule of law through vested
inclinations.

The intelligence of the people, of individuals, gets trampled upon when
leaders speak-up and build a make-believe world to entrap them in their own
designs where they do not get a chance to voice their differences. By this
initiative, which will reach each and every city, town and district of the
State in its own time, will give a chance to the people to talk, where
leaders shall listen to adapt themselves accordingly, to make
legislations, laws and rules that are compatible with the general thinking.
After all, we are in a democracy and everything is supposed to be happening
as according to the wishes of the people.

We shall thank you to project these views in your writings to apprise the
people of Goa that such a thing is happening and it is to their own benefit
and advantage that they voluntarily participate and be listened to.

And, we have absolute faith that your good intentions will carry the day.

Yours Sincerely,
for Goa Su-Raj Party

Tony:

I agree with you. There is a history about Arafat that is rarely told and his
forced involment
with terror (which is not to say I condone it - but I understand). This
excerpt from the NATION
(11 Nov 04) says much, especially the last sentence.

We in the West too often ignore what no Palestinian will ever forget: After
the Palestinians'
catastrophic defeat of 1948, when some 750,000 were expelled from their
homeland and began living
in destitution in refugee camps scattered across half a dozen countries,
forgotten by the world,
abused and cynically exploited by Arab despots and demagogues, it was Arafat
who, along with a few
comrades, gave birth to the Palestinian liberation movement. It was the PLO,
under Arafat's
leadership, that restored Palestinian pride and helped to forge a nation out of
a population that
was geographically dispersed and politically divided. And it was Arafat who led
the PLO, in the
face of fierce internal resistance, into adopting the two-state solution in the
mid-1970s. But his
conciliatory peace offering at the UN General Assembly in 1974, and numerous
subsequent peace
feelers, were met with persistent rebuffs from Israel and the United States.

Regards,
George

Goanetters.
We read about the Maruti van tragedy in Goa, that involved 2 families
from Pune. Marutis or Suzukis sold in India, have never been considered
safe, especially the van. I have read of cases where a branch of a tree that
had fallen on the road, cut through the top of a Maruti car and killed a
family and of an engine landing on the rear seat! I think that these cars
and Maruti Udyog have survived in India, solely because they have the
blessings of the Central Government. Laws that don't protect the consumers
have not helped. If Maruti Udyog was selling such cars in any Western
country, by now it would have to wind up its operations! But since
we are dealing with India, it is a completely different scenario.
Then again, I have seen drivers go berserk on Goan roads. I have seen
two cars overtake me at the same time! Nobody cares at the time of
overtaking, to see if there is somebody coming in the opposite direction.
I think that all these lightweight cars like Maruti, Hyundai, Palios and
whatever else, are indeed very fragile and unsafe. Most of the SUVs
introduced by Tata and Toyota have also been involved in many
accidents that have smashed the smaller cars. Once a friend told me,
Show me a Maruti without a dent and I can put one on it with my fist!.
Whatever traffic rules that do exist are hardly enforced. Whenver RTO
officers are on the road, they stop trucks and cars from outside Goa,
and every bus on the road knows that there is an RTO party waiting
on a particular road!
Until we enforce the existing traffic rules and learn to drive by these
rules, we are going to have these problems. The consumer laws have
to be strengthened to protect the lives of those riding in these cars.
Of course, not all can afford safe cars like the Benzs and Volvos, but
we certainly need to have cars that will provide basic protection in a
crash.
I hope that the families of those killed in that van accident sue Maruti.
One other thing I always remember is that Paulo Travel drivers were
always known to be kind of 'rough' with their driving. I did not however
read in the reports whether the driver in this particular crash, was
solely responsible for the accident or whether the van came and hit
the bus. In any case, innocent lives were lost because of a very unsafe
car.

In his response to my posting on the subject, Mario Gouveia
accuses me of being selective when making comparisons between Arafat
and other celebrities accused of being terrorists. In point of fact, it
is those who accuse Arafat and other leaders like him who are fighting
for their peoples' rights of being terrorists, whilst being themselves
guilty of the worst terorist crimes, who are being selective as well as
being hypocrites.

Please understand that the so-called Israelis are in fact European
Jews who have forcibly occupied vast tracts of Palestinian Arab lands,
illegally constructed settlements therein and driven out those who have
been living there for a couple of thousand years into squalid refugee
camps where they live under sub-human conditions. Can they be expected
to meekly accept such blatant injustice?

As I have stated in my post, every human life is precious and
any unnecessary loss of such a life is to be decried. Mario rightly sheds
tears for the lives of Israeli civilians killed by Palestinian suicide
bombers. I hope he spares a thought for the thousands of Palestinian
civilians killed by Israeli air attacks and tank fire in civilian areas.
Comparisons are odious, as they say, but whatever attrocities the Palestinians
Arabs may be accused of perpetrating on the Israelis pale into insignificance
when compared with the systematic persecution of the Jewish race by
European Christians over two thousand years, culminating in the Holocaust.
Is it right for Palestinian Arabs to be paying for the crimes of European
Christians?

Thank you Radhakrishnan and Cornel for supporting my stand.
I agree with Cornel that Arafat may have been corrupt, but who are the
Americans to judge him? If awarding a pension to his wife (now his widow)
is to be considered as corruption, how does one describe the award of
no-bid contracts in Iraq worth millions of dollars to a firm (Halliburton) of
which the Vice-President of the U.S. was the C.E.O? A case of spreading
freedom and democracy, perhaps?

Let truth prevail!

With George W Bush returning as US President for the second successive term,
Wipro Spectramind, the BPO arm of IT major Wipro Limited, is bullish about
growth and adding 1,800 to the existing headcount every month at its
facilities.

Chief executive officer of Wipro Spectramind Raman Roy told reporters on the
sidelines of the inauguration of Kolkata Development Centre here on
Friday since outsourcing is a major economic decision, it will not be
affected on who comes to power. However, continuity definitely has its
plusses, Roy said.

Speaking about the growth plans of the company, Roy said that they were in the
process of identifying the location for setting up the next development
centre, adding that choice of the venue would be either Goa or Coimbatore.

At the end of the last quarter, Spectramind's headcount all over India was
13013, adding the
just-opened Kolkata centre was already employing 1000 software professionals
to start with.

Asked whether the bandh culture in West Bengal was a major cause for concern
for carrying out BPO operations, Roy said this had been a major area for
client resistance.

The Kolkata centre has three clients at the moment.

Goa has always been in the news. It has many firsts
pre- Liberation. The first printing press, the first
Medical College in Asia to list a few . Post
Liberation a hired motorcycle taxi , the first Chief
Minister to be put behind bars, the first Speaker of a
Legislative Assembly to defect after the Anti
Defection Bill and now the first sitting MLA to resign
from the Assembly and seek re-election on a different
party ticket . The list is endless.

But if Goa has been selected as the venue for the
35th International Film Festival of India – and
atleast, as of date destined to be a permanent venue
–then indeed Goa has added another feather to its
cap.

For 451 year the Portuguese ruled in some
predominantly Catholic dominated Talukas and since
1763 i.e for 198 years in the remaining predominantly
Hindu dominated Talukas until 19th December, 1961 and
with this came a new breed of Goans with cultural
influence of the West mingling with the East .

Therefore in the eyes of tourist both national or
international visiting this tiny 25th State, for its
beach tourism, hippy destination land of the 70's,
the recent paedophile syndrome, its sun, sea, smack
cheap liquor, nudity, acid parties, rave shows,
discreet sex orgies, rest, health, recuperation
destination, rock and jazz music motor racing
go-karting,casinos, discos, party zones, party animals
catamarans, peace, tranquility, htich hiking, wild
life, crocodile viewing, boat rides, yatching, eco
tourism jolly people or Goan Ladki , Goa has
invariably been described either as the Rome of the
East or Kashi of the South because of its
numerous temples in the Hindu dominated Talukas.

To add to this is the beautiful scenery enhanting
surrounding beaches and it extensive biodiversity
borne by the Mandovi (Mhadei) river or thirteen small
and big rivers which drain from the Sahaydris and
meander into the coastal plains washed into the
Arabian sea travesing the lenght and breadth of the
State.

According to Smt Jayashree Raghuraman IAS Secretary
(Information)Govt of Goa she state that she made a
forceful plea--for IFFI 2004 though Goa did not have
the Infrastructure in place then in January 2004 as
compared to Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal Kerala

but eventually succeeded because of the aforesaid
characteristics of this tiny state under Portuguese
dominion until 1961.

Director of Film Festival Govt of India Ms Neelam
Kapoor was clear that Goa would be a permanent
destination for the film festival firstly because Goa
is known internationally-- what with CHOGM and the
visit of the present Pope in the eighties secondly
with so many European tourist making Goa their
destination when winter sets in at their end, one
could expect them to have business mixed with
pleasure and hence a Film Bazaar is also planned.

Indian Film Industry lacked a proper permanent
promotion of film market whether it is Bollywood or
other regional film centres in South AP Karnataka
Kerala They had to do it at Cannes in France Canada
and other film marts abroad.

As the count down begins for the red letter day 29th
November 2004 -- to 9th December 2004 a 60 member
orchestra of world acclaimed A B Rehman will
reverberate the Dinanath Mangueshkar (named after
father of Lata Mangueshkar and Asha Bhosle) Kala
Mandir, within the precincts of the renovated (in a
record three months time by Uttam jain Architects

over 200 International films from America Canada Iran
Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Germany,UK, Bangladesh
South Africa, with many others to follow including
several from India.

There is an International Media centre and Jury room
as well at the main venue.

This will be followed by a live rope dance performance
by noted danceur Ms Isha Sharvani. The first film to
be screened on 29th will be Vanity Fair by Ms Mira

actor Dilip Kumar. Noted film producer and distributor
Mr Subhas Ghai will lead the function. The whole event
will be telecast live by Doordarshan to the country
with networks around the world.

From the next day onwards until 8th / 9th December

Francis, a man in a hurry
(A dance drama on the occasion of
the Exposition of the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier)

On the occasion the Exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier, the
Society of Pilar will present 'Francis a man in a hurry' a dance drama at
the Pastoral Institute, Old Goa starting from 22nd November to 28th
November. The show which will be presented in English and Hindi is intended
to help pilgrims reflect on the life of St. Francis Xavier.

'FRANCIS, A MAN IN A HURRY' looks at Francis' life as that of any young
modern man in a competitive world who was in a hurry to conquer the world's
honor and fame. A subtle challenge to his mundane aspirations from Ignatius
Loyola rattled his paradigms and set him on a pilgrimage to meet the divine
within the inner most depths of his being. This inner pilgrimage turned his
world upside down. However he continued being a man in a hurry. Except that
this time his great hurry is chanelised to win the world for God. The entire
drama is well corroborated by reflective dances and thoughtful music. It
calls the youth to draw inspiration and conviction while they attend to
their day to day chores.

The Hindi version is called Francis; Shigratha mein ek manushya. This will
be performed by a special cast from Delhi and Jharkhand, while the English
version has a young and promising set of student actors from Goa. Conceived
and written by Fr. Allan Tavares, the music is set by Fr. Nixon D'Silva and
the directed by Fr. Domnic Alvares. The Hindi show will be held at 2 pm and
the English show will commence at 4 pm.

The Dance Drama is a production of the Society of the Missionaries of St.
Francis Xavier, popularly known as the Society of Pilar, an indigenous
Missionary Society based in Pilar, Goa. The Society of Pilar which has its
branches spread in the rural places of India, has St. Francis Xavier as its
heavenly Patron and draws inspiration from his life in reference to its
mission of spreading love, peace and justice.

Limited seats. Complementary entry passes are available at Re-animation

Gilbert asked about how liberal Hindus deal with caste system, and Sachin
responded very candidly.

However, has anyone discussed the dirty little secret among many orthodox
Goan Catholics and how the caste system, which they were supposed to have
gotten away from when their ancestors became Catholics decades or even
centuries ago, still continues to fester at or just below the surface, often
bursting out into the open in ugly family disputes mostly having to do with
marriage partners?

I find this a disgusting and embarrassing practice in the Catholic community
that has caused havoc and heartbreak among many families and continues to do
so today, and it's not restricted to the Goan community, but exists among
Mangalorean Catholics and Kerala Catholics as well, with separate churches and
parishes for dalits in Kerala. Talk about Pharisees!

Public money, private interest

If Mr Parrikar chooses not to give Govt advertisements

then what are the people going to do. After all it is
public money. And in a democracy the government is of

Why should Mr Parrikar be cooly allowed to use public

A post I recieved from Tomazinho Cardozo ,
I felt I should share with you all on this Forum.

RB

DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI

The name

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) was established in 1988. This Akademi is
named after Mgr. Sebastico Dalgado, for his various contributions to enrich
Konkani Language. Mgr. Sebastico Dalgado was a scholar of Konkani as
well as many other languages. Dalgado was born in Assagco, a village in
Bardez, Goa on May 8, 1855. Mgr. Dalgado devoted himself to the study of
Konkani in scientific and systematic manner. He was the first person in Goa
to use Devanagari script for Konkani and to print the first Konkani book in
it.  He compiled two dictionaries Konkani-Portuguese and Portuguese-Konkani;
Konkani was then written as well as spoken in various dialects. Mgr.
Dalgado found his own Bardexi dialect the most suitable to standardize
Konkani. Mgr. Dalgado's aim was to show that Konkani was a full-fledged
independent language.
Mgr. Dalgado's contribution to the development of Konkani language is
immense. He rightfully deserved a prominent place but in vain. In order to
keep the name, the works and sacrifices of Mgr. Dalgado alive for the
present and future generations, the Akademi was named after this great son
of Goa.

 The first phase:

For the first four years DKA was very active. Fr. Freddy J. da Costa was the
President. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo was the secretary and Mr. Prabhakar
Tendulkar the treasurer. During this period, DKA published 'Konkani
Orthography in Roman Script' with the intention of bringing about a
desirable unity among the writers, so that the writers could understand the
principles and rules of writing Konkani in Roman script. A number of
programmes were conducted in various parts of Goa to popularise Roman script
and Konkani written in it. Subsequently due to various reasons DKA slowed
down and remained stand still.

 The second phase:

It was observed that the writers of Konkani in Roman script were totally
neglected as they were not getting any financial backing from any quarters
to carry on their activities. In fact, after the passing of Goa Official
Language Act, the Government and the institutions working for the cause of
Konkani in Goa, supported Konkani in Devnagiri script only. Publications of
books in Roman script suffered. Institution like Kala Akademi stopped giving
awards for Konknani Books in Roman script.

In order to support and to give boost to the creativity of Konkani writers
in Roman script, some well wishers of Konkani in Roman script came together
and decided to revive Dalgado Konknni Akademi. Presently Mr. Tomazinho
Cardozo is the President, Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes and Mr. Prabhakar
Tendulkar are the secretary and treasurer respectively. Besides there are
other 10 prominent persons as members of the Executive Board. Various
sub-committees have been formed to popularise the activities of the Akademi.
Literary Committee is headed by Fr. Peter Raposo, Editor of Vavraddeancho
Ixtt, while Wilson Mazarello, popular stage artiste, is the chairman of
Cultural Committee. Dr. Olivinho Gomes, former Head of Konkani Department of
Goa University, is the Chairman of the Committee to frame the Constitution
of the Akademi, while Dr.Pratap Naik, Director of Thomas Sthepens Konknni
Kendr will head the Awards Committee. The present membership of the Akademi
is over 200.

Aims and Objectives:

The present Executive Board has set a few aims and objectives and activities
to strengthen Konkani in Roman script.
The first and foremost objective of DKA is to promote Konkani language in
Roman script, which is neglected, side tracked and given step motherly
treatment. Konkani written in Roman script goes back to 1560. Without its
Roman script history, Konkani would not have got the recognition by Sahitya
Akademi, New Delhi in 1975. It has the rich cultural heritage and it has
become integral and unavoidable part of Goan culture, specifically of
Christians. The vast majority of Goan Christians read Konkani written in
Roman script. Hence it has to be preserved fostered and developed.

DKA will make all efforts to provide support, financial and otherwise, for
writers of Konkani in Roman script. It will work untiringly to obtain for
them their just and lawful demands, dues and rights. DKA will recognize
those institutions, which are working for the promotion and development of
Konkani Language, literature and culture in Roman script. It will initiate
various activities in literary, cultural and social field

Recently I came across a background controversy (there are many of these on
the Net) about the terms Gulfee and Shipee.

Quite frankly as the son of a Shipee, and the brother-in-law and relative
and close friend of many Gulfees, I see nothing at all derogatory with the
terms. But then I myself am neither a Gulfee nor a Shipee.

I would like to ask any Gulf Goans, and Goans working on Ships, if they
find the terms Gulfees and Shipees derogatory. If they do I will stop using
these terms in speech and writing immediately, with due respect to their
feelings.

The anatomy of festival venues
   By: Nandita Puri

For the first time the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be
held in a brand new and permanent venue in Goa. The idyllic meeting point of
sun, sand and sea.

And it will henceforth be the meeting point for films, filmmakers and film
lovers the genuine as well as the not so genuine where there will be
mindless discussions on films over feni.

It is nice that like Venice, Karlovy Vary or Locarno, India will at last
have a permanent venue for its festival.

Not only will Goa serve as an ideal festival venue but it will also serve as
a nice break, especially for the foreign delegates who will definitely
breath lightly after having run from pillar to post in Delhi and the other
equally boring venues.

Yes, there will the your regular festival circuit audience. But what one
wonders is what about the local film aficionados. You can install delegates
anywhere, but the local venue should also be film savvy, or else there is a
certain something missing.

I sincerely wish IFFI the best in Goa. And what an ideal venue it could be
if it was had a combination of the local beauty of Goa, the technology of
Mumbai, the flash of Delhi and the audience of Kolkata.

Goa guy
Theres no doubt about it. Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks is Goas
unofficial brand ambassador. Youll find his name on hoardings, stores and
even restoration projects while in the city of sun, sand and surf. And that
s not all. The designer is usually associated with every other activity
social or otherwise that showcases Goa to the outside world.

Its not surprising then that Wendell will be in Mumbai as the paperback
edition of the late Frank Simoess Glad Seasons in Goa is launched. And we
wont be surprised either if a poll proves that after feni, cashews and
perhaps Mario Miranda, Wendell is one of Goas best known elements.
