[Goanet] Pamela's article, Looking Back, in Frontline

2011-12-14 Thread Eugene Correia
Just a few remarks regarding Pamela D'Mello's article Looking Back in
Frontline. Goa does NOT completes 50 years of its liberation but
rather enters into the 50th year. I would rather say Goa celebrates
its 50 years of liberation.
Pamela says that the transition of power was not easy and no one
expected it to be. There was no transition of power as Goa was
conquered. Yes, as Pamela states further, there were administrative
problems from one type of bureaucracy to another.
Pamela says Goa is at the crossroads, but I think Goa is on a
straight path to progress. Pamela talks about mixed feelings about
the state's growth trajectory. The debate on what is good for Goa both
in terms of industry and commerce will never end.
But progress needs to be controlled in order to save the natural
environment that is Goa's treasure. That controlled development is not
followed is a cause for concern for Goa as it moves into the next
stage. Since liberation, Goa's identity has undergone change and
Pamela right points out to the growing angst of disappearance of
Goan identity. She says Goa has assimilated with the Indian
mainstream. I doubt there is such a thing as Indian mainstream in a
country divided by languages and cultures. In fact, Goa has slowly but
surely integrated into the Indian nationhood. Today, the very lines
of distinctiveness that separated Goa from the rest of India have been
erased to a large extent by the sands of time.
The socio-cultural traditions of Goans are definitely under pressure
from forces outside Goa. Bollywood may have taken some toll on Goan
culture, particularly among Hindu Goan youth. On the other hand,
Catholic or rather Christian Goan youth have taken to Hollywood as
well as music from established western singers. Very few Catholic
Goan youths who are university-educated are into Konkani songs and
tiatrs. Enculturation of the young into Goan arts and traditions would
help in retaining the local flavor. A government advertisement says,
140 institutions have been financially helped to preserve cultural
heritage of the state. The establishment of the Tiatr Academy is a
good example. The battle ahead for the next 50 years is to have an
all-round growth in economic, educational and cultural spheres.

[Goanet] OBIT: Mario de Miranda - His sharp wit never needed a punchline (Vivek Menezes)

2011-12-14 Thread Goanet News Service

His sharp wit never needed a punchline
Almost until the very end, he was still in full creative flow: turning
out inimitable, zesty drawings to burgeon a genuinely monumental legacy
that began with a saucy can-can scene commissioned by Dosoo Karaka for
The Current in 1953

By Vivek Menezes

Panaji, Goa: One of India’s most influential artistic lives of the 20th
century came to an end in Loutolim, Goa, on Sunday, when Mario de
Miranda died in his ancestral manor at the age of 85.

Almost until the very end, he was still in full creative flow: turning
out inimitable, zesty drawings to burgeon a genuinely monumental legacy
that began with a saucy can-can scene commissioned by Dosoo Karaka for
The Current in 1953. Still in his 20s, Mario, had quickly become
established as one of India’s best illustrators. His images then
remained ubiquitous across the Indian media right into the 21st century.

His cartoons of top-heavy secretaries, flirtatious sardarjis and
bumbling bureaucrats charmed readers across India; and creations such as
Miss Nimbupani and Miss Fonseca appeared on a regular basis in Femina,
The Economic Times and The Illustrated Weekly of India. Some of these
works also adorn iconic venues such as Panjim’s municipal market and
Mumbai’s Cafe Mondegar.

That very popularity was a kind of undoing, however, because Miranda’s
artwork never wound up receiving the serious critical recognition it
merits. Even worse, he was always extremely unjustly compensated, and
like his close friend of many decades, the seminal Indian modernist
Francis Newton Souza, Miranda was ripped off and exploited constantly,
enduring difficult financial straits at the end of his life.

But while Souza burned permanently wrathful, Miranda was the opposite.
He remained extraordinarily free of bitterness or malice. This
characteristic bonhomie made everyone who encountered him into a friend
for life. It’s also the most evident characteristic of his artwork. A
better-loved body of work will be hard to find.

Until quite recently, we understood there were three clearly delineated
phases to Mario de Miranda’s career.

The first began at The Current, and flowered marvellously at the Times
Group of publications in the 1960s. By this time, the shy, handsome Goan
aristocrat had met and married Habiba Hydari from one of the noble
families of Hyderabad. The young couple soon were at the centre of a
cosmopolitan Bombay universe quite unlike anything that had come before.

Just as his friend and long-time collaborator, Behram “Busybee”
Contractor’s gentle columns came to define the gently swinging Bombay of
the times, Mario’s exuberant full-page illustrations in The Illustrated
Weekly—and later, The Afternoon—served it all up with a broad wink, no
punchline necessary.

Everyone laughed, without exception. Even years shy of my 10th birthday,
I vividly recall cracking up no end to Mario’s full-page drawings of
cocktail parties and dances, so delightfully chock-full of zaniness and
sly observations.

A major artistic development took place when Miranda started to travel
abroad regularly in the 1970s, and began to build considerably more
ambitious suites of work based on his foreign observations.

The critic Ranjit Hoskote has written, “Mario is a master of the
meticulously detailed and gorgeously proposed urbanscape.” Now freed of
space constraints, deadlines and editorial interference, Miranda began
to compile immensely detailed observations of Lisbon, Jerusalem, Macau,
New York, Paris (and many other cities), a wonderful and unique body of
Indian travel journalism that has yet to find proper understanding or
recognition.

It’s clear he wanted to move beyond the daily cartoon regime, but that
opportunity never quite arrived.

The third major phase of Miranda’s life and work deals with Goa. It is
simply a fact that he produced by far the largest and most influential
body of images of Goa of any artist in history. Francis Newton Souza did
execute unquestionable masterpieces, but they’re trumped by the sheer
ubiquity of Mario’s drawings.

To Goans of my generation (I was born in 1968), it is the Miranda vision
of Goa that occupies the mind’s eye when we think of any number of
iconic scenes, themes, or even individuals. But what is less understood
is his and Habiba’s tireless, generally thankless advocacy for the rich,
complex and confluential art and culture of the state. It was a lifelong
motivation.

It may be hard to imagine that an artist so widely beloved, for so very
long, still had something left to surprise. But this is indeed the case
with Miranda, and an unseen part of his artistic legacy that has only
come recently to light.

These are the remarkable visual diaries that the young artist kept from
1949-1952, years he spent at home in Goa after the sudden death of his
father. Mario never attended art school, but had always been a
prodigious caricaturist. Now he

William de Curtorim was not only a fearless political or fast (jet speed)
singer , he was a genius in ‘on the spot composing’  too.
If he was called back 5 times, each time he would sing different verse thus
composing it then and there (no repeats).
He could compose on any thing or anyone may be the person sitting in the
audience, member of the band etc
if he sees someone sitting alone in the front rows, he would mention him or her
too.

Shashikal-Cococola fuu - and he blows his mustache in the air..
We will miss William. RIP

[Goanet] ...butterly, utterly......Eugene

2011-12-14 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Aye Eugene,
Sylvester is a half Goichi, like Dom M no?
Both from the katlic community of Byculla; half-n-halfone of their
parents were East Indian (as in Mumbai EI).
If one remembers correctly, Sylvester wrote about the old days in
Byculla, the homes etc for one of the Mumbai afternoon papers (and I
think mentioned his background).
He did speak a few lines of Concani. It was 'cool' in 80s ad business
of Mumbai to zip to Goi for a quickie of 'drinks and fish-curry' and
talk about it for rest of the year!!

The Book-list some time ago had a few posts mentioning Dom being
Goichi! Naai-re, positively half-n-half (Dom's mother is EI). Minor
matter though.

Now stepping back a bit about written and spoken Ingleesh in
Goilate ole Dom was a master in that department..one guards
the dusty copy of Answered by Flutes.

And a small note on de Miranda: he never missed a Caplin re-runs at
the New Excelsior Cinema (Mumbai VT). He stood out as the few elderly
folks amongst the college students slipping out of the afternoon
showsalways explaining how he adored Chaplin films and he never
tires of watching them over-n-over!

Eugene:Dear JoeGoaUK,

It is not correct that Mario was behind the Utterly Butterly
Delicious Amul ad. It was created by DaCunha Associates, headed by
Sylvester Da Cunha, a Goan who is an icon in India's advertising
world. The Amul girl was created by Eustace Fernandes. I am not sure
if he is Goan. He died last year, at age 75.

[Goanet] G.E.M.S. TV CHANNEL for GOANS MANGALOREANS EASTINDIANS

2011-12-14 Thread jm
Journalists, Lay associations, etc from the Goan - Mangalorean - EastIndian
( G.E.M.S.) community need to pool in resources and start a news channel
dedicated to issues related to christians living especially on the west
coast of India. The channel should be obviously named GEMS TV. The current
lot of TV news channels i.e. NDTV, TIMESNOW, HEADLINESTODAY, CNNIBN, NEWSX,
etc rarely give any coverage to issues related to Christians in India.

Apart from issues related to christians other topics i.e. current affairs,
corruption, land acquisition, labour problems, female
foeticide/infanticide, communalism, terrorism, social issues, business,
sports, gulf jobs, opinions of clergy and lay catholic groups, etc should
also be covered.

When people in North India or South India or Gujarat or Delhi or other
parts of India hear the word Bhoomiputras of Bombay/Mumbai in their minds
comes the marathi manoos. There is hardly anybody in other parts of India
who know about the original bhoomiputras of bombay i.e. EastIndians (
www.bombayland.blogspot.com ) KolisThe current lot of TV news
channles never disclose anything about the original bhoomiputras (
www.east-indians.com ) of bombay and how they have been reduced to a
backward class status because of all their lands in bombay being grabbed by
government, slumlords, landmafia, etc.

[Goanet] 1st JANUARY - INDIAN GOVT. HOLIDAY for CHRISTIANS - HINDUS OTHERS

2011-12-14 Thread jm
China does not have a significant Christian population but the Chinese
govt. has realized the significance of 1st January and has declared 1st
January as a National holiday long ago although there are other reasons
behind china declaring 1st January as National Holiday...In India the
1st of every year is a religious day for Christians but in the last few
years even the majority hindu community have started bursting crackers when
the new year begins on 1st January and also party all through the night.
Its time the Government of India realized the significance of the 1st day
of the year and declare the 1st of every year i.e. 1st January a National
Holiday...China has become a great economic power because
during the last 30 years the chinese govt. followed a combination of
industrial development population control measures although because the
news media internet is censored and filtered by chinese govt. due to
which issues related to human rights violation, pollution, female
foeticide, labour exploitation, corruption, etc have been pushed under the
carpet.

Maharashtra govt. has a policy of accumulating revenue (stampduty, sale of
govt. land, etc) from the Bombay region by giving the builders lobby not
only more floor space index, more tdrs, more relaxation of crzs but
whatever vacant lands which the Maharashtra govt. is in possession in the
bombay region the same is being sold to the builders lobby and in the
process the Maharashtra govt. is destroying the ecology environment of
bombay…..In the future if there is a cloudburst or tsunami or supercyclone
or Earthquake there will be a massive disaster in the bombay
region…….Politicians who control the Maharashtra govt. have sold their
hearts, minds, body, soul to the builders lobby and are not bothered to
protect the last few bits of openspaces, mangroves, ponds, lakes, wells,
forestland, saltpanlands from being taken over by the builders lobby………The
Bombay Muncipal Corporation two years back decided that new buildings in
the bombay region will get water connections only when the middle vaitarna
water project is complete and had also said that new buildings will not get
NOC if the building does not have a water harvesting system but all these
rules are only on paper because the politicians who control the BMC have
also sold their hearts, minds, body, soul to the builders lobby and the
builders lobby are getting all types of permissions………Can anything be done
to break the nexus between the builderslobby Politicians and save bombay
from various disasters…….yes………the election commission should pass a law
that those politicians who are directly/indirectly associatied with
builderslobby those politicians who are in construction business those
politicians who have their family members in construction business those
politicians who have shares in any company involved in construction
activity will not be allowed to contest electionsand citizen
activists should demand a special law from the Indian Maharashtra Govt.
for bombay to protect the last few bits of openspaces, mangroves, ponds,
lakes, forestland, saltpanlands from being taken over by the builderslobby,
slumlords landmafia.

There are a few Lay Catholic groups in India who are agitating for these
demands : 1Church Lokpal type body to check corruption within
Catholic Churches in India. 2Catholic Church in India should
introduce the Right to Information (RTI) for catholics so as to expose
corruption at all levels in the Church. 3.Make corrupt bishops,
parish priests clergy accountable and liable for punishment.
4convert all vacant church properties for setting up community
centers, gardens, parish halls, sports grounds, graveyards, etc.
5...Reservation of 50% seats for catholics in Catholic Schools and
other Catholic Church run institutions. 6.Catholic Missionaries,
Caritas, Catholic relief services should utilize 50% of their foreign funds
for the welfare upliftment of poor catholics and the other 50% for poor
non-catholics at present barely 10% of the foreign funds are being utilized
for the benefit of poor catholics. 7..names, designations, mobile
nos, qualifications other details of the members of parish councils,
church committees, finance committees, property cell committee catholic
school committees should be disclosed in the parish bulletins or on the
notice board and every two years the members should be changed through a
voting system in the parish 8..Bishops to be appointed by lay
catholic groups from the diocese and not Vatican. 9...Parish
priests to be appointed by local parishioners and not the Bishop.
10..Declaration of how church funds are utilized vacant
properties in possesion of church including the area ctsnos survey nos of
the properties to be disclosed in parish bulletins or on notice board once
in 3 months. 11...Members of Lay catholic groups should be

Re: [Goanet] Where were you when they crucified my Lord?

2011-12-14 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Let us look at the question: Where were you when they crucified my Lord?

The above should be seen as an exhortation towards self-examination. The
examination of ones conscience. A self examination which prepares one to
respond to the question when it is encountered in ones being. The
crucifixion is a two pronged metaphor: the injustices that people face, as
well as those who subject others--their bodies, minds and indeed the souls
to strife. Everything else follows from here.

The crucifixion in the christian thought happens every time a grave
injustice is done; injustices where dignity is stripped away, wills are
forced, rapaciousness, and mayhem is loosed upon the weak, those with less
reach. It happens daily. The conscience asks this question of the Christian
every time ones core becomes aware that something egregious had come to
pass, and ones place in that injustice. The core can be ignored but the
question comes up--it is always asked.

The conscience also asks the same question of others, and I presume on the
following lines: In your being and knowing, did you not see their plight?

There is an obvious, and not oblivious aspect in play here. So the question
is a yardstick, a plumb line, a spirit level if you will--towards a
consideration for ones fellows.

My original post:
We should be men and women first and subject afterwards. --Henry David
Thoreau

Please share this video amongst yourselves and with those who remain
confused of what the Church/ a church is capable of. This is based not on
what it could do, but what it has already done and continues albeit
sporadically now. A forgetfulness of its mandate, often even by the
simplest shepherd--the parish priest.

[Goanet] The Rogues' Gallery Revisited

2011-12-14 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

'Tis that time of the year.  To remind Goans of the rogues who betrayed a
movement.  It was our last gasp, our final chance to recover Goa, or at
least arrest the decay.

I clearly remember the energy and promise of December 2006.  But it all
came to nought and worse.  Goa is today done for.  Yet these rogues
line up to accept awards for 'saving' Goa or pretend to be eco warriors.

This is also an I TOLD YOU SO moment for Soter and I.  We were the first
and the only people to blow the whistle and expose the charlatans masquerading
as Goa's saviors.  We were 110% right then, we have been 200% vindicated
by the events since.

These rogues have done worse damage to Goa than our dirty politicians,
or all the opportunistic non-Goan leeches like Putturaju and Morad
put together.  For these guys took the trust and faith of Goans and then
danced footsie.  They had the government on the mat post Dec 18, 2006.
But they played games and collaborated with the very govt they said they
were fighting against.

Soter and I told you then about the blue eyed doctor and the smooth talking
architect.  The architect feigned indignation.  As for the good doctor, he fell
back on the old chestnut: how dare they question my integrity, he thundered.
As I wrote here once, I'll give the doctor a penny for all his integrity and he
can keep the change.

If my RTI applications (to over 35 panchayats) revealed something, it was that
the architects - Goan and non-Goan - were playing a double game.  Pretending
to be 'eco-sensitive' while at the same time preserving their business
interests.
This situation is otherwise known as the fox guarding the henhouse.

For months I posted photographs here on Goanet about illegal construction,
hill cutting, depleted fields etc, and I posted data about land conversion
and other related matters - not ONE activist of any standing from the GBA
ever asked to see any details.  Now you know why.

Admin Noronha was as usual sniping from the sidelines, as is his wont.
First he claimed I was exaggerating, then he blamed my zoom lens, and
when these old maid tactics didn't work, he began casting aspersions on
my motives, hinted about my secret Hindutva/RSS/BJP connections, and
spread gossip my sources of funding.  Alas, nothing worked.  Tch tch tch.
What we do know now is that it is Admin Noronha who has to do some
explaining about sources of funding.  I shall have more to say about
Admin Noronha - after all, he started this, and it is a fight I am more
than happy to have.  And I have infinite patience and zero fear about
protecting reputation, mine or anyone else's.

My post - GBA's history rewrite - FAIL - on Goanet from last December
deserves a replay.  Please re-read -

Dear Bosco,

There was a so called Eulogy, well obviously it wasn't, which was then put
out on Goan Voice (U.K.)  about some one having an alcoholic problem;
loosing car license and the beloved car.

I hadn't realised the true meaning of an Eulogy; although at that time I
did write that one is supposed to talk about the good that the dead did,
not bring up all their short commings.

Now this Eulogy writer and orator gentleman and his supporters including
our finest fiery lady, will proclaim that I am always harking on the past!

Herewith snippets:- On early Sunday morning, he turned up and on enquiring
where he was, he told me he spent the night in police cells.

paid a heavy price for that traffic violation - he had to give up his love
for driving and dispose of his dream car - his beloved Ford XR4.

At about this time too, he gave up his legendary affinity for the amber

Aye Panduji,

I am not sure if Sylvester's mom was Goan or East Indian, but Dom's

the case of tennis star Leander Paes, whose mother is Jennifer, an
Anglo-Indian. The Anglos claim him as one of their own. True, they are
half-entitled to it but he will remain a Goan.
What about Mario de Miranda's sons, half-and-half?

[Goanet] Noise pollution in Panjim (Rewind and Replay)

2011-12-14 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Recently I received an email from a resident of Panjim saying that the
noise from the evening cruise ships has made life miserable for him
and his family.  I don't know what to say.  As I have often wondered
here in the past -  What, short of a nuclear explosion, is it going to take
for the Goan to shift his ass?

I have received several notices from the Goa Pollution Board.
They have proof and it is in writing that the cruise operators are
in violation, yet no action is ever taken.  When I go and raise
some hell, the noise stops for about a week and then it is
back to normal.  The cruise owners and the authorities are all in
league.  Btw, I once confronted a cruise ship owner (one of
the GBA nobodies) about this issue.  He claimed that his own
ship never exceeded the decibel limits, but before I could
question him further he bolted from the scene.  Yeah, quite
the savior of Goa, the guy.

These are the documents I received from the Goa govt -
