A stitch in time: The Indian roots of Uganda's gomesi

As the tale goes, the gomesi, a traditional dress worn by Ugandan women,
was designed by a Goan tailor

Her vintage parlour, overlooking the circuitous succulents in the garden,
would fit right into a Dicken’s novel. Photo frames and plaques tell
stories of a life well spent. Joyce Mpanga (84) has been part of Ugandan
politics since the 1960s, a member of Parliament (MP) and deputy
headmistress at the prestigious Gayaza High School. She also travelled to
the US to pursue a master’s degree in education from Indiana University,
Bloomington, in 1961, a path trodden by few.

But what she enjoys most is sharing stories of Ugandan culture. Like the
one about how a pair of Goan tailors changed the social fabric of
Uganda—literally.

“We used to wear a suuka, which was initially made from bark cloth, and
then modified to cotton. It was a piece wrapped around your chest, with
something to cinch it at the waist,” she says.

But in 1905, Mpanga says, when the Church Missionary Society (CMS) started
Gayaza, an all-girl boarding school, the suuka did not find favour with the
missionaries. (Incidentally, the CMS supposedly set up the school after it
started a school for boys in Mengo, Kampala, so that the educated boys
could find educated girls to marry.) And so, the Gomes brothers were called
in to design a uniform—one that would go on to become Uganda's de facto
national dress.

“The school was headed by women who were Victorian. Bare shoulders were
frowned upon. Plus, the suuka would often come undone when the girls did
any physical work. So, the first British headmistress, Alfreda Allen,
called for a Goan tailor, Gomes. They came up with the idea of wearing a
bolero over the suuka. But this was inconvenient too. Then Gomes started
stitching this bolero over the suuka, this is the style we still follow.
The puffed sleeves is a Victorian influence on the dress,” says Mpanga.

It is believed that Allen invited the older of the two Gomes brothers,
Anton Gloria, to discuss the design for the uniform. It was his idea to add
a yoke to the dress, to address the problem of unraveling. Later, the
younger brother, Caetano Milagres, added a sash around the waist, which is
still part of the current design.

The gomesi (also called the busuuti), named after its Goan inventor, today
is very important, both socially and culturally, in Uganda.

“The gomesi is a mark of respect, and must be worn at all social
engagements, such as kwanjula (an introduction ceremony before marriage),
marriage, funeral or even when you are meeting elders in the family,” says
Florence Kiwanuka, speaker at the Parliament of the Buganda Kingdom, adding
that she remembers an introduction ceremony that went awry because a young
girl from the entourage had not worn a gomesi.

Maggi Kigozi, the face of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for more than a
decade, has slightly different take. The gomesi, stitched up to seven
metres of cloth, isn't the most convenient form of clothing, bordering on
the unmanageable, says Kigozi, clad in one of her bespoke suits (many from
India). Nevertheless, she is extremely proud of her Baganda roots.

“The significance of the gomesi became more pronounced after our kabaka
(king) returned from exile. The dress is beautiful and elegant, and
portrays the African culture. Today, gomesis are better colour-coordinated,
and even have matching buttons and accessories,” says Kigozi.

In addition to the six-odd metres used for the dress, there is an
additional layer forming the base, which is the traditional Ugandan kikoyi
fabric.

Joyce Sebugwawo, mayor of one of five divisions of the Kampala Capital City
Authority, says, “You tie a kikoy, or maybe two, under the gomesi to give
you better shape, since it makes your hips look broader. It is a unique
dress, and a matter of respect in our culture. The process of wearing a
gomesi can be cumbersome, so you have to really believe in your culture to
wear it everyday."

Sebugwawo has worn a gomesi every single day, to work and to every social
gathering, since 1994, because she wanted to "preserve her culture, and
lead by example".

For Celestine Katongole, a lecturer at Makerere University Business School
and founder of Sights & Sounds of Africa Safaris, the gomesi is synonymous
with his mother.

“All her life, from the time I first saw her till she passed on, my mother
wore a gomesi. What is so clear to me, even years after her passing, her
gomesi was our blanket at night for a long time. To me, the gomesi was much
more than just my mother’s dress, it was a source of warmth at night, and a
piece that raised us,” says Katongole.

According to him, not wearing a gomesi is almost considered "indecent" by
some in Ugandan society. However, Katongole also says he's seen a decline
in its popularity, especially among the younger generation.

“As a product, the gomesi could have gone through

[Goanet] STATE OF AFFAIRS

WHAT A STATE OF AFFAIRS!
When I go to the Porvorim post office, The clerk takes about 10 minutes for
one customer, and he cannot/ will not do any writing work because the printer
is not working. On asking I am cheerfully told the matter has been reported 8
days back! The queue in the meantime is getting longer. The notice at the
counter, that no work involving printer can be done is faded and almost
unreadable. More surprising, people patiently tolerate all this
patiently.Prices in the market are atrocious. CarrotsRs110/kg, tomatoes Rs90/-,
bananas Rs60/doz and so on! The less said about the power and internet
reliability the better. Instead of bothering about our problems in our daily
lives that make it miserable, the government just adds to it by enacting laws
to suit its own agenda. Enamoured by the antics of Modi and Shah entourage, the
people are applauding these dynamics, which they do not really understand and
suffering in silence. The climate of mistrust and antagonism being built up is
frightenning. Desicrations are happenning in Goa again, and in other parts of
India killing of pilgrims, vigilantism, ruling party/VIP arrogance going
unchecked. When I scan the media, I see agitations and trouble all across our
nation, Our border areas under threat, China encircling India and helping
Pakistan in its nefarious agenda in Pakistan. Isn't it high time all those
silent in the majority community speak up without fear and like beads in a Mala
or Rosary every person/ religion is one bead, all joined together with the
unity in diversity which the world admires us for?

[Goanet] Fifteenth Sunday of the Year

2017-07-12 Thread Jude Botelho
12-Jul-2017
Dear Friend,
We all love to have fruitful lives. Whether working at home or in the office or
factory, we feel fulfilled when we have produced something at the end of the
day when we can show the results of our efforts. On the other hand we also
sometimes experience the frustration of wasted efforts and the exasperation of
a wasted day. God is interested in my growth and desires that all we do is
brought to fruition. Have a productive weekend!  -Fr. Jude.
Sun. Ref: XV Sunday “Some fell on good soil and produced, some hundredfold,
some sixty, some thirty” 16-Jul-2017Isaiah: 55: 10-11;          Rom 8: 18-23;
       Matt. 13: 1-23;

In the first reading Isaiah has his focus on nature, on the rain and snow that
falls on the earth and soaks it and fulfills its purpose of making the earth
fertile and capable of bearing fruit. The earth may have seeds but if there is
no water it cannot bear fruit. By falling to the earth the rain has fulfilled
its purpose –prepared the earth and the seed to blossom forth. Similarly, God’s
word goes forth from God and has the potential of giving and sharing life.
God’s word had the power to transform and change our lives. Without the word
our lives are barren and sterile. But if we accept the word, and are open to
it, it will accomplish the purpose for which it was sent. Open my heart and my
life to fulfill your will.

Guerrilla Goodness –Kindness growsA woman in a red car pulls up to the toll
booth at the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. “I’m paying for myself and the
six cars behind me,” she says with a smile. One after another, the next six
drivers arrive at the booth, money in hand. “Some lady up ahead already paid
your fare,” says the collector. “Have a nice day.” The woman, it turned out,
had read a note taped to a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice Random Kindness”.
Judy Freeman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall, 75 miles from her
home in San Francisco. When she couldn’t get it out of her mind, she finally
drove all the way back to copy it exactly. A few days ago I heard from a friend
in Marin County, California. She had jotted the phrase down on a restaurant
place mat after mulling it over for days. “Here’s the idea,” she says. “If you
think there should be more of something, do it – randomly. Kindness can build
on itself as much as violence can.” A passer-by may plunk a coin into a
stranger’s meter just in time. A group of people with pails and mops may
descend on a run-down house and clean it from top to bottom while the elderly
owners look on, amazed. A teenager shoveling snow may be hit by the impulse and
shovel his neighbor’s driveway too. Senseless acts of beauty spread. A man
plants daffodils along a roadway. A concerned citizen roams the streets
collecting litter in a supermarket cart. A student scrubs graffiti from a park
bench. It’s a positive anarchy, a gentle disorder, a sweet disturbance. And you
can’t be a recipient without feeling a pleasant jolt. If you were one of those
commuters whose toll was paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to
do for someone else? Like all revolutions, guerrilla goodness begins slowly,
with a single act. Let it be yours.Adair Lara in “Glamour”
In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus speaks of many things in parables. One of his
parables spoke of the Sower who went out to sow seeds. It appears to be a
simple parable full of meaning, which can be applied to our lives. There is an
abundance of seed sown which falls on different types of soil. Some seed fall
on the path and are eaten up; others fall on rocky soil and their growth is
stifled and choked. Their growth is hampered because they had no depth and
withered away. But there are some seeds that fall on good soil and bring forth
grain, some hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Jesus adds, “Let anyone who
has ears listen.” When asked by his disciples Jesus reveals the deeper meaning
of the parable. When we meditate on His word the deeper truth and insights
reveal themselves to us. Often we claim all credit for the effort we have put
in, forgetting that without the seed our efforts would be in vain. The seed may
look small and our effort might look humongous but without the seed of God’s
blessing and power we strive in vain. On the other hand, without our effort God
will not do anything in our lives. He needs our co-operation and sustained
efforts to produce fruit in plenty. We have been given a wonderful vocation, to
be co-creators with God, to multiply the fruits of the earth and sustain
creation for ourselves and others. We are the privileged ones! “To you it has
been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not
been given. For to those who have more will be given, and they will have an
abundance; but for those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken
away.” “But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears for they hear.
Truly I tell you, many

PREZ, VICE-PREZ

AND RS ELECTIONS

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

The offices of the President, Vice-President and MPs of the Rajya Sabha are
chosen representatives of eminence and prestige. While the offices of the
President and Vice-President are the topmost in the country, the Rajya
Sabha MPs are the elder statesmen representing states in the upper house.
Considering that these representative should be men and women of sagacity
and wisdom, iy would be right for all those eligible to vote namely the Lok
Sabha MPs, the Rajya Sabha MPs and the members of state legislative
assemblies to be given the freedom to cast votes for candidate of their
choice who they consider to be with the most merit and experience.

If this method is followed the country will have the benefit of services at
the highest level of the very best and thus an elevated level of decorum,
fairness and justice will reflect in the upholding of the constitution as
in case of the President and Vice-President and our upper house will
consist of the most credited representatives cutting across party lines.

[Goanet] Men of Sagacity and Wisdom?

2017-07-12 Thread Roland Francis
Dear Stephen,
The men in high office in India are are as incorrigible as the worst of them.

You did have a few good men like Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, JPS Abdul Kalam,
Morarji Desai, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Atal Bihari Vajpayee who earned their
places but the rest of them were just handed over their positions for being
yes-men or worse.

I'm not telling you what to do, but I can get the aura of you being a gentleman
with values from the Portuguese era. You can either break your head against the
brick walls of ineptitude in Goa or you can take your Portuguese passport or
get one while you can and enjoy your golden years under Costa or anybody else
in Portugal, a fine country with a low cost of living, a beautiful environment
with good food and good wine that Salazar in his obstinacy and bull- headedness
made available to all Goans.

[Goanet] GOA FOTING PARTY SHOULD DIVE INTO THE BJP

2017-07-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Executive Committee of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) meets in Panaji at 4
pm today to chart its future plans. After having backstabbed the people of
Goa, the only way forward for this outfit which now has been rechristened
as Goa Foting Party is to merge itself into the BJP.

After having for the sake of usurping power and pocketing those crores
having fallen in love with the saffron party which is geared and controlled
by the RSS and the right wing fundamentalists, Goa Forward has lost all
relevance as it was formed on January 25th 2016 with a prime objective to
oust the Communal, Corrupt and Castiest Bharatiya Janata Party.

After having betrayed the trust of the people of Goa who in February this
year had voted against the BJP, Vijai Sardesai, Jayesh Salgaonkar, Vinod
Paliencar and the now not so independent Rohan Khaunte are all at the mercy
of the BJP as they shamelessly and disgracefully sold themselves to the
Saffron brigade. And as beggars can be no choosers, they will have to
mutely tow and put up with the BJP’s devious agenda to which they so
brazenly surrendered. Under the guise of Goem, Goenkar and Goenkarponn it
has been Fot, Foting and Fotingponn all the way.

As he who sleeps with the Devil might as well be loyal to the Devil, now
the only way Forward for those political bandits Vijai Sardesai, Jayesh
Salgaonkar, Vinod Paliencar and their accomplice Rohan Khaunte is to
officially join the BJP and seek a fresh mandate by contesting on the
saffron party, that they so immorally and unethically wedded.
