I can see second wave of modernity leaving Goans behind, they seen quite
cozy in their comfort zones...and are in danger of being left behind.

Goans have cast themselves into a new kind of caste, an invisible one.

They are now the ones who sit in the back pew, and now comfortable at
home watching politics TV then Mass via internet. They ones who have
transformed Community Welfare Societies into low brow Country Clubs.
They spend endless hours in pastimes, reciprocal social events, small
talk, and efforts to maintain an air of dignity.

Susagade has become status quo, laziness and cowardliness.

Thank god for these young Goan kids. But the question remains, whose
kids are they really?

a golden egg. "In/ order to protect this universe, He the most
resplendent one assigned separate (duties and) occupation to those who
sprang from his mouth, arms, thighs, and feet/." (/The Laws of Manu/, /24)./
Manu then added: /The Brahmin was his mouth; his two arms were made of
the rajanya (warrior/Kshatriya), his two thighs the Vaishyas (traders
and farmers), from his feet the shudra (servile class).

This classification has been accepted over the centuries. Nobody
(scholar, academic, philosopher) has rejected it as being weird,
ridiculous or irrational. No public intellectual or think tank
challenges it. No public discussion or debate is held. That's the Indian

MPT TRYING TO FOOL PEOPLE OF VASCO USURP VASCO BEACH FOR COAL

Traditional fishing communities have lived and fished in Vasco Bay for
thousands of years and possess customary rights over the entire Bay and its
shores, including the parts usurped by MPT illegitimately to serve foreign
interests. Unfortunately, both the State Government and the Central
Government continue to work for profits of large corporations, both foreign
and Indian, even today, and are determined to displace and destroy all Goan
traditional communities to achieve the aims of their greedy masters.

Goa Against Coal condemns MPT and Goa Government’s attempt to defraud the
fisher folk of Vasco Bay by creating a fraudulent MOU which conceals the
devious plan to displace all the fisher folk community eventually.

The MPT is planning to future expands its coal handling and thus plans to
capture the entire Vasco Bay as they plan to build 4(four) additional
berths at Vasco bay by adding additional facilities of liquid bulk, cargo
vessel, coal, for naval etc.

Therefore MPT is building narrow vertical finger pier, with berths on both
sides by dividing the beach. And in future additional finger pier berths
will be build on the east side by reclaiming the land and thus the area
used currently by fishermen will be displaced to further east that is
towards chicalim bay thus completely displacing the fishing fleet at Vasco
bay.

In addition to this the additional capital dredging will be required to
attain at least 14.5meters depth and by dredging more then 15 cubic million
tonne of silt from Vasco Bay.

Vasco bay has witness heavy erosion due to MPT’s continues illegal dredging
and from 1.10km of bay now only 500meters with only 35meters of sand dunes
left and the rest is completely eroded and if the finger pier berth is
build by the MPT then not only the Vasco bay will disappear but also Baina
bay and surrounding beaches around 10km radius will be effected .

MPT’s Final Report entitled “Development of Business Plan for MPT” dated
March 2007 clearly states that on page 6-51 that the social impact of
development of Vasco Site would be “Fishing fleet to be relocated”. The
plans for ‘developing’ Vasco Bay are on pages 6-53 to 6-57, which clearly
shows that it is planned to systematically displace the fisher folk over 3
or 4 phases, the current MOU being the first phase.

The proposal to usurp the lands of the fisher folk and to construct liquid
cargo handling facilities on the finger pier to be constructed in the area
presently used by fisher folk is an essential part of the coal expansion
project, since berth 9 cannot be used for coal without relocating the
liquid cargo handling facilities existing on it presently. MPT has
foolhardily awarded a Contract to Vedanta for ‘Development of Berths 8, 9 &
Barge Berth’, and is now desperately trying to take our lands for their
profits.

Goa Against Coal again demands that all coal projects in Vasco Port be
scrapped and the fisher folk be given additional facilities within MPT
without touching any of the remaining lands or facilities of the fisher
folk.

Goa Against Coal demands that Vasco Port be developed as India’s premier
Cruise Terminal which will be a boast to Goa’s tourism, and that handling
of coal and other dirty and hazardous cargoes be completely stopped in
accordance with the recommendations of experts and by the Goa pollution
board which clearly said to reduce the coal handling by 20%, so that
employment, health and economic and social growth of Vasco City are given
priority, rather than profits of three corporations.

We also demand that the government of Goa should scrap this project in toto
and Vasco Beach be nourished and restored to its original form by using
expert knowledge available with our scientists to recreate the glorious
beach of past years. So that it can be used for recreational activities by
the people of Vasco and Mormugao Taluka as a whole.

[Goanet] A Goan Catholic Path To Atheism

2017-07-25 Thread Roland Francis
No matter how indoctrinated you are from birth, in the family, throughout the
years in Christian school and in adulthood every Sunday and more often than
that;

No matter how comfortable it becomes to remain in the warm comfort zone of a
Roman Catholic life in which you were born due to a set of historical
circumstances;

There will come a day when you get the opportunity to set your critical
thinking in motion and if logic, reason and science triumph over mere faith and
blind custom;

Then you will realize that science voids the notion of a soul and a life after
death. You will breathe the air of truth and freedom and appreciation of what
this life really has to offer.

You will no longer have the false comfort of godly forgiveness from a god that
has been created by human beings to satisfy their own fears and to aid in the
exploitation of others. Truly as Hitchens writes: God is not great and religion
poisons everything.

If you are a theist and want to see the views from the other side, go to your
public library and ask for the books of Anthony Grayling, Sam Harris, Tod
Billings, Michael Shermer, Richard Dawkins, Richard Carrier, Jerry Coyne, Bill
Nye (the Science Guy), Christopher Hitchens, Lawrence Krause, Dan Dennett, Neil
de Grasse Tyson, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and many others. All but Hitchens (recently
deceased) are living and they are modern philosophers, evolutionary
biolologists, physicists, cosmologists, neurologists, sociologists and
activists.

When you have moments you want to relax on You Tube, see the video channels of
The Thinking Atheist, The Quiet Atheist, The Amazing Skeptic, The Atheist
Experience, Mona Eltahawy, Jacklyn Glenn, Seth Andrews, Matt Dillahunty, Rachel
Oates, Tracie Harris, Laurie Ann Gaylor, AaronRa and many others you will find
by yourself.

They will address everything you need and want to know. There are more Goan
Catholics in the closet than you can imagine. If you are one of them, I urge
you to come out and be free of the thinking that binds from the truth.

Aires, we cannot thank you enough.
Eddie is right to notice that we on Goanet have held back too long in
acknowledging your effort to clean the mess that is Goa.

You are right to say that it is an ongoing battle. You have had the courage not
to be intimidated with a thousand pressures and with physical violence.

Yes, Eddie is correct in reasoning that we Goans are too lethargic, expecting
someone else to do what needs to be done, or too cowardly to face up to the
challenges of fighting injustice.

Outside of Goa we can only wish that more people in Goa, true to themselves,

Let truth and the good of Goa always prevail.

You are doing great work, Aires and surely have the support of all people of

I can guess two reasons:
1) indifference (Goenkar trait, also called susegado?)2) fear of the ruthless

But do carry on regardless.

we do have to depart, it should be with a proud sense of accomplishment of
at least having attempted to do something little for our Goa, once the
Paradise of the East. In death, one may be physically gone, but the spirit
will always be around to witness that glorious day when Goa will be truly
liberated from injustice, corruption and nepotism, all sadly a way of life
today.

In the words of Robert Kennedy “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or

Postal Service at Chinchinim
The Senior Superintendent of Post Office, Mapusa, Goa Region was contacted
by registered post by the Postal Committee 2 years back. Since then vacancy
for the existing post remains unfilled. Not surprisingly sheer arrogance of
the authority refused even to acknowledge it .The telephone message is not
accepted too. There are long serpentine Q`s with senior citizens put to
great inconvenience, To make matters worse, one of the clerk is sent on
frequent deputation to other post offices for weeks together or some
training .It means that Post master is saddled to handle issuing of stamps,
stationery, registration , deposits, pay outs, telephone bills besides his
regular administrative routine The customers get irritated with frayed
tempers due long delays in service besides break down of the electronic
system
It is to be noted that Chinchinim Post Office has deposits of about 80
crores almost double in comparison to Navelim, Cuncolim Quepem, Canacona,
to mention a few examples Hence the large customer base need better
considerations There t is a compliment of at least two staff members in the
above post offices at any time .This is insensitivity of taking for granted
the genuine needs of customers will soon burst out into violent protests as
the authorities are alone responsible for this festering situation too long
and limits to patience

[Goanet] Seventeenth Sunday of the Year

2017-07-25 Thread Jude Botelho
25-Jul-2017
Dear Friend,
If we were given by God a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity to ask for anything
that we want or desire, what would we ask for? Good health? Wealth? Success?
Power? Unlimited possessions? Or a combination of all these? It sure is a
difficult choice to make! Our choices would reveal what we value and cherish
most in life. Perhaps we don’t even know what is good for us and we would
hesitate to make a choice. Have a wise discerning weekend! –Fr. Jude.
Sunday Ref.: Seventeenth Sunday “Seek first to understand God’s Kingdom and
promises! 30-Jul-2017Readings: Kings 3: 5, 7-12;          Rom 8: 28-30;
 Matt. 13: 44-52;

Today’s first reading from the Book of Wisdom reports God’s apparition to King
Solomon in a dream at night while the newly appointed King had come to the
sanctuary in Gibeon to offer sacrifices. The Lord starts a dialogue with a
wide-open proposal to the king: “Ask what I should give you.” What an unique
opportunity to get whatever he wants! Solomon does not miss his chance. But his
prayer and request is surprising. Solomon starts by praising God for his great
love for his father David; he then confesses his unworthiness and inadequacy in
governing his people and finally asks for the gift of an understanding heart to
discern what is right and wrong. God heard his prayer and granted him his
request.
Understanding the otherOn their golden anniversary, a couple were kept busy all
day with the celebrations and the crowds of relatives and friends who dropped
in to congratulate them. So they were grateful when, towards evening, they were
able to be alone on the porch, watching the sunset and relaxing after a tiring
day. The old man fondly gazed at his wife and said, “Agatha, I am proud of
you.” “What was that you said? asked the old lady. “You know I am hard of
hearing. Say it louder.” The man repeated, “Agatha,” I said, “I am proud of
you.” “That is alright,” she replied with a dismissive gesture, “I am tired of
you too.” Alas, we don’t hear, or try to understand what the other is saying.
–What would happen today if the leaders of the world had a divinely inspired
wise and understanding heart? Wouldn’t it be nice if we were to pray for wisdom
and insight to understand the true meaning of our relationships?John
Pichappilly in ‘The Table of the Word’
In the Sunday Gospel Jesus gives us a wonderful example of God’s generosity.
Human beings are always in search of some or the other treasure in life. For
some it is wealth, for others it is a good name, and for still others it is a
life-giving relationship. All this is done with a view of experiencing a deep
sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Today’s reading proposes three things
which one should yearn and long for in life. Matthew compares God’s kingdom to
which we are all invited, to a treasure hidden in a field. Someone finds this
treasure and sells his possessions in order to acquire that treasure. God’s
kingdom is also like a merchant who comes across a pearl of great value and
sells everything in order to buy the pearl. Jesus gives a third example: God’s
kingdom is like a net cast into the sea, catching fish of every kind. Some are
good others are not. Only at end-time will they be separated. Perhaps we could
ask, have we found anything that we treasure in our life? Is there something
that we value in our faith? Is my faith valuable? Would losing my faith make a
difference? We all have experienced days when we are upset and distraught
because we have lost something. We cannot function because something is missing
in our lives. A wise and discerning person will make wise choices in life so
that later on we have no regrets. Like Solomon we need to ask God for the gift
of wisdom to help us make life’s choices.
The Cost of DiscipleshipDietrich Bonhoeffer was a young Protestant professor
who resisted Hitler and his Nazi movement. His book, ‘The cost of Discipleship’
speaks of living for and witnessing to Christ in a difficult political
situation. The Nazis executed Bonhoeffer for his faith. Truly his discipleship
cost him his life. Since we are talking about gold, the Hindu of June 29 2005,
carried the story of a goldsmith’s son, 22 year-old Deeraj Gurunath Revinkar
from Belgaum, who left his home on May 24th by cycle and arrived in Srinagar on
June 28th. He covered 3,350 kms on cycle to spread the message, “Polio Free,
Pollution Free India” What a golden venture! Christianity, as well as other
religions, are proud of many missionaries and martyrs who have given their all
to go after that pearl of great price or that treasure in the field. After an
astounding solo performance capped by a standing ovation, world famous
violinist, Fritz Kreisler, was approached by an admirer who said, “I’d
sacrifice my whole lifetime to play as beautifully as you do!” Kreisler
replied, “I’ve already done that!” Would you give anything less than
that?Francis Gonsalves in ‘Sunday Seeds

him, some strength to deal with it. Also there are lots of flats been
allotted or gifted to politicians which needs to be investigated and
exposed. In Dona Paula sector where I live and elsewhere there exist many
high rise construction from well known builders and I was told some
politicians have been allotted flats in their buildings and societies and
also they keep on coming there for a visit or to stay or may be they have
rented.
Your Editorial missed one point that the politicians are the ones who are
giving support for illegal activities for the purpose of election vote and
also they are the ones who have also have illegal bungalows/flats and later
regularized. This also should be investigated by competent authorities from
the government.
The TCP Minister allegedly has his own illegal bungalow itself in the
fields. Your reporter must verify all these illegalities and give help to
the Government before exposing this to the public otherwise our fields
will disappear with constructions activities by politicians. I do not see
Goans staying in these flats as they cannot afford to buy them.
