Yes totally misread, confused regarding of various announcement during this day
where I only retained « more contestant » and « 1000 to round 3 ». My bad :).

All those new features are exiting !

Felix, I see no 4000 number in the terms or in the rules, so I'm hoping you
just misread the 4500. If not, feel free to ask again.

Re: [gcj] Google Code Jam 2018 registration is open

2018-03-07 Thread 'Pablo Heiber' via Google Code Jam
Hi,

There were 1000 advancers from each Round 1 into Round 2 last year, for a
total of 3000. There are 1500 advancers from each round in 2018, for a
total of 4500. The confusion probably arises because there were 500
advancers from Round 2 to Round 3 last year, and that's also the case this
year.

Quoting from 3.1 (b) of the Contest rules:

"You will advance to Code Jam Round 2 if you are one of the highest-ranked
1500 contestants from one of the sub-rounds in Code Jam Round 1."

Please refer to 3.1 (b) for clarification of advancement conditions for all
other rounds as well.

Best,
Pablo

That may sound like a stupid question. But since there is now 4000 more
participants that can move to round 2, does it means that there is no more
three round 1 session (A, B, C) ?

Thanks for pointing this out. As expected, you'll need to read input from
stdin and write output to stdout. We'll add this to the FAQs shortly.

Notice that at the bottom of our quickstart guide (now used for Kickstart
only) there is a small tutorial on reading from stdin and writing to
stdout, with examples in the most popular languages:

Best,
Pablo

Re: [gcj] what to do after seeing an question on dashboard

2018-03-07 Thread Bartholomew Furrow
What language are you using? Typically what I do is write a program to read
from stdin and write to stdout. I read the input by running my program like

solution < input.in > myattempt.out

Then I upload myattempt.out.

In this year's Code Jam, rather than downloading inputs and uploading
outputs, you will write code to be run on Google's servers. We haven't
learned yet whether that code will need to read from stdin, read from a
file, or what.

I hope this helps!
Bartholomew

Re: [gcj] Re: Google Code Jam 2018 registration is open

2018-03-07 Thread Joseph DeVincentis
Hidden *subproblems*. The subproblems are going to be equivalent to
different inputs, visible and hidden ones being equivalent to small and
large inputs of past Code Jams in the sense that you got the results from
small inputs immediately after you submitted them but large input results
were not revealed until after the contest. However, they have added
language suggesting there will be more inputs which programs are tested on,
making it likely that some programs will get partial credit for passing a
portion of the tests, and thus reducing the massive number of ties that
have to be broken by time. It sounds more like Hackerrank where there are
sometimes a dozen or more inputs which a single program is tested against.
Since they are running the programs and capturing the outputs themselves,
rather than you having to download and run inputs and upload results
individually for each case, it is feasible to do this where it was not
before.
