Hi -
I'm going to be on the west coast (U.S.) next week and am determined to
visit at least one fabric store! So, in San Francisco or in the LA area,
if you could visit one fabric store where you could be assured of a
fantastic bargain on silk, where would it be?
For silk, I'm thinking
Well, I don't know if they are still there (we moved
east 15 years ago) but there used to be a couple of
silk warehouses in the LA garment district. Some of
the local folks can probably say for sure. Twenty
years ago I bought some really excellent Chinese silk
for a really excellent price. I
If you to go Berkeley, you might want to go to University Avenue, where,
stretched out over some blocks, is an Indian sari shop district. There
are a number of shops varying in quality and pricing. Also, just off
University is IMO the best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area. And one of

San Francisco:
The Silk Trading Company: Not a bargain outlet, but if you get any
chance visit the Silk Trading Company, which BTW is not open on
weekends. This is a huge, warehouse-sized store crammed with fancy
silks, silks, silks (especially, all kinds of taffetas, including ones

can find pretty much any cuisine here.

Went to see this movie yesterday. Of special interest to me was the
wardrobe of Dolores Umbridge. I think they cornered the market on pink

cat jewelry.

enough restaurants for everyone to eat out every night for three years, and then
you would have to start over because there would be new ones.

Sounds about right. The whole Bay Area, not just SF, is full
Hi,
I was wondering whether any of you have some recommendations for e-shops with
fabrics or shops that would send me a catalogue? Some shops that would have
basic fabrics like satin, taffeta etc. in various colours? I always get in
trouble when searching for one specific colour...
Try this one:

I've got a bunch of links to fabric sources online at del.icio.us.

Depends what you call a bargain. How much is silk usually?
There is Fabrics R Us in San Jose, about 30 miles south of San Francisco.
Lots of silks in a wide range of colors. It's on Berryessa Rd. I don't
remember cost, sorry.

I may get banned for saying this, but I was so irritated at the liberties
they took with Umbridge that she grated on me the entire movie. She is so
particularly described as frog-like and wearing an Alice Band (a hair band
