[h-cost] Gift Exchange
Many many thanks to Pierre and Sandy Pettinger, for the wonderous package I was gifted with. I made myself wait till Christmas eve to open it. Each and every item is lovely and I had to remind my little 7 y/o daughter that she could not make off with fabric all of it was wrapped in. I can not say thank you enough. I am overwhelmed to recieve such perfect gifts. To Katheryne (of Woodbridge? NJ), I mailed your gift late (hanging my head in shame). You should get it in the next day or so. I have been sick and working some long hours at my church doing costuming for The Gospel According to Scrooge. But still, I should of gotten it out to you in a more timely manner. Please accept my sincere apologies and please let me know if you do not recieve it soon. Or feel free to contact me off list. Cool! I've wanted to do a fermented indigo vat, at least one version of that involving a similar substance, but don't have the space/place for it, given the odiferous results. I live in a house chopped up into apartments, and I'm pretty sure the neighbors wouldn't care for it! ;o) I haven't heard of using pee with weld, though...I wonder how the change in pH affects the weld? --Sue, occasional dabbler in natural dyes - Original Message - From: Genie Barrett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Historical Costume [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 2:09 PM Subject: Re: [h-cost] Re: Christmas gift exchange At 02:54 PM 12/26/2006, you wrote: Okay, with a hint like that, you just gotta tell us what the dye substance was, or we'll just *DIE* of curiosity! ;o) --Sue Oh fine GRIN and I quote... [h-cost] Questions re: Moda a Firenze
I've lucked into some Christmas gift money and am looking to (finally!) purchase this book. However, given the hefty price tag, I'd like to get some reviews (regrettably, the local textile library doesn't have a copy). Some of my questions: What are its strengths? Weaknesses? Are the writers credible? Is the book well researched? What is the quality/quantity of photographs? Any construction detail? Thanks in advance! If you want to do Italian Ren, then you **NEED** this book. However, the book is out of print -- I've heard rumors that it *may* be reprinted. The only place that I know of right now that has it for sale is Poison Pen Press, and last time I checked, they wanted 190.00 for it. Evidently, I got one of the last copies that Michael Shramansky had! http://www.poisonpenpress.com/costume.html you'll have to scroll for it. There are more gorgeous paintings in this book that I had *never* seen anywhere else before. It's more like QEWU than PoF -- there aren't any patterns, but ... Construction details? In the wardrobe inventories, amounts of fabric are given. Close ups of paintings of various details (sleeves, partlets, etc) are provided and discussed. The text is parallel Italian/English. I second Susan's recommendation of the book, although I've yet to finish reading my copy. The info is very detailed, including history of the family, and far more images than I've seen elsewhere. They even include an image of an extant smock I'd not seen anywhere else done in lovely embroidery. I do believe that Lacis in Berkeley, CA has some copies on their online store (www.lacis.com). The only bad things that I can think of is thet the intro by the authors is in Italian. Plus-- there is no index. Makes it difficult to reference. Other than that it a WONDERFUL book. Re: [h-cost] Christmas gift exchange
I received, in such good time that I had to sit on my hands to resist opening early, a package of lovely things from the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne: -a catalogue raisonné of their Dürer collection (one of my FAVORITE artists of all time!) -a gorgeous same of the exhibit Everlasting: The Flower in Fashion and Textiles (fabric, lace, and beautiful garments) -three postcards of eighteenth-century family portraits -a stationery card with Antonis Mor's Portrait of a Lady (c. 1555-60) Some of the plays I've directed and costumed are from these periods, so the illustrations are of particular interest. Thanks so much to Sharon Nevin. --Ruth Anne Baumgartner scholar gypsy and amateur costumer p.s. I agree with some of the comments posted today about how hard it is to stay in the spending limit. I went to my favorite discount fabric store to shop for my partner's gift--he has gorgeous trims that are remarkably affordable--but even at his prices I could afford only ONE of the six lovely things I wanted to send On Dec 26, 2006, at 12:09 PM, Lynda Boots wrote: My gift was a wonderful book on an Anglo-Saxon burial excavation. Looks really interesting, but that automatic translation from French into English is utterly hilarious. Diane, My recipient Kate Soehnlen is still waiting as well - I missed the quick trip to the US! Maybe we can extend it to be a New Year's Gift?
