Greetings! While this is not my era of research I do handle quite a few gloves and know just enough to find portraits to help others on their journey in finding gloves suitable for their gorgeous gowns. What I have found may not help but I hope it will at least point you in a direction to experiment on a color. The portraits that I have seen of ladies in black gowns that are not of a mourning nature wear either fawn colored full gloves or skin toned lace fingerless gloves. What you may want to do is take a few fabrics of the colors you think may work and lay then with the gown next to your arm and photograph them. This will be your test if the color will not only look proper but if it will go with your skin tone as well. The quickest place currently for you to find portraits of ladies in this era wearing black with gloves is actually Pinterest. They kind of squish and shred the fabric, and sometimes don't even cut. I am pretty sure the Ginghers are as sharp as they're supposed to be; but I actually have somewhat better luck with my brother's old shears. Does the fabric have to be under tension or something? The Maney Publishing copy published in 1988 is the more valuable copy. I have both copies, this one and the 2001 republication. The paper quality is better in the older publication and the images are sharper and deeper in color than the 2001 copy. The 2001 is currently being sold for anywhere from 100 to 118. The 1988 copy sells for anywhere from 250 to 300. This is most certainly a sign that the photographic arts are being lost and assumed duplicated because, "it is just a picture". There are so many works of art lost to us that sometimes these photographs is all we have left of them. I find it absolutely a mortal sin that of all places the V&A destroyed their entire collection citing that they were simply duplications and nothing more. To lose the original owners photographs with notes of the history of an item is just heartbreaking especially if the item is gone. :( I really hope they actually digitized at the very least those notes. You can also adjust the blade that sharpens the point. The problem that I found with the one I got the kids was that it runs too long, so when the point is its sharpest it hits the wall and the tip breaks. If you adjust the blade you can get it to create a sharper point before it hits that wall and then you have to "eye ball it" to make sure you stop so that your point will not break. It is the wall sharpener that is driving me batty at the moment. I do not know what to adjust to make it stop breaking the point. The trim maker that finally gets a clue and starts making embroidery or beaded designs on a near-transparent Russian tulle/voile will make millions off of us. That would allow us to apply it to whatever fabric we are working with. I remember back in the 60's that my grandmother would purchase exactly that for embellishing her made to order quilts. I have many friends in the industry. They all will gladly tell you that you have to make sure you have it in writing that you give final approval of the cover. It is an often overlooked part of the contract. Most of the folks I know have a few artist friends on retainer specifically for book covers. Grant it these are few and far between authors that do this but not every knows that can have it written up in the contract. The book I used was in the archives of the HRC in Austin Texas. I just had to share .. the school of historical dress http://theschoolofhistoricaldress.org.uk/ This new school has a curriculum that will cover all aspects of the designing and making of historical costume for theatre, cinema and the living history movement; its unique approach will focus on developing the skills and understanding needed to create new generations of historical tailors, seamstresses and other specialists. All teaching will be from practitioners who are actively working in various related areas of dress - cutters, tailors, sewers, designers and historians. Our aim is to promote the study of historical dress and textiles by the students, both of the Western World and of other cultures, and to base such study on primary evidence, in particular, by studying and understanding surviving clothing supported by written sources and visual (portraits, sculptures etc). The school will encourage new research into historical dress and introduce students to the tools needed for this, such as how to study an object, identify its materials, cut, construction and historical context, and then how to document the object by pattern taking, drawing and photography. Students will then be taught to make such garments themselves. The school will house the Janet Arnold Archive, including her unique and extensive colour slide collection of both surviving clothing and related images. The Hopkins Collection of surviving garments and textiles from c.1700 to 1950 will bring further riches. This large collection, gathered over forty years by Alan and Vanessa Hopkins, includes examples of the dress of men and women from all social classes. Together with other such resources, these collections will be actively used in the classroom. They will form the basis for projects and students will have the opportunity to handle objects as part of their studies. That was my wedding dress design over 25 years ago with the full neckline. But for my second wedding I cut all the lace off and made it ... yep ... a strapless. I still have all the parts. I was listening to an NPR show about businesses that help older folks go through their homes and catalog it all specifically for selling. One does nothing but books, another takes care of valuing and selling items for eBay. You may want look them up and see if your collection and that still at your brother's is worth selling off or donating to local museums. My father works at a museum in his home town and while it is a small place they love getting things that have to do specifically with the town. This is a slightly off-topic question, but as I'm in the middle of the post-Pennsic garb cleaning binge, spending hour cleaning hems and steaming wrinkles gives one a lot of time to ponder the value of the fabric and time in one's garb. So I started wondering whether I should get a rider on my insurance to cover the garb, and realized I had no idea how to estimate the value in question. In most cases I know how to estimate the fabric cost, but how do I estimate labor, especially on things with 100+ hours of embroidery? I'm not a pro seamstress, so I'm somewhat at a loss... You might be able to get both if you click on the extra links in your searches for the books on Amazon. Sometimes someone is selling one out of their shop linked on Amazon for half the price or less. But if you must choose, go for the one that has been out of print the longest cause you may never find it again. I remember that the pdf icon was always somewhere either at the top or the bottom early on. I was always able to download what I needed. Now maybe they light gray color would make folks think that it was not downloadable but if you hover over them they show that they are clickable for downloading. Only once did I run into an article that I wanted that I could not find a pdf button for but a week later the button was there. Beautiful as always Bjarne! The lining is attached at the finger tips for gloves. The same would apply here. Attach at the top of the mitt and at the top of the thumb. Then attach it at the cuff. Leave the side seams unattached. Make sure you allow the fabric for the mitt and the lining to hang so that it stretches out first. You do not want something this delicate to have a lininig no longer fit because one or the other stretched out over time.
