Silk velvet(silk and rayon)is getting harder to find, even online and I usually need to check fabric out in person. Over the past ten years, the few specialty fabric stores in my area have closed due to retirement of owners and economy. Even the one good quilting fabric store may close. The fabric and craft stores I can get to by bus are also closing or moving to locations further out west, and the new stores are smaller. I only dress dolls now in historic costumes, so thank goodness for my fabric stash I do have. And I haven't made one in over a year, but hope to start up again soon. I'm really lucky in respect to fabric...my man is posted with the military in Seoul, Korea and he actually knows about fabrics, so I can just tell him what I want and he gets it for me at the fabric district. :) It's not that much cheaper over there though, since the bad economy has pretty much affected the whole world. I have set him a quest this weekend to look for 100% silk velvet, so we'll see what he comes up with. I don't know the name of the store unfortunately; it was one of the ones on Perth street (which is basically the Dallas fabric district). :) Also, I got my velvet over 2 years ago (like I said, I really need to find the time for this project!). Unfortunately I don't have the ability to dye the large amount of silk velvet that I needed (15+ yards); I was willing to pay for the service they claimed to offer to get the exact shade I needed. Lucky for me I have since found the red silk velvet that I needed; now I just have to find the time to work on the project! ;) I wouldn't patronize any company with such poor customer service as they showed me. I found my velvet at a small private store (not a chain and not online) in the fabric district near me (Dallas); of course I came across it when looking for something else. ;) I have a front load washer so no washer dyeing for me. I have a front load washer so no washer dyeing for me. That's why I always have a top-loading one. Feel free to purchase from them if you want. I was just sharing my experience. I emailed to ask how much they'd charge for undyed velvet. What did they charge you per yard? If you get anything dyed in future: My advice is go to the hardware store, get two copies of a paint chip in the desired color, send them one, and keep the other. Tell them the dye job has to closely match the paint chip, and you'll only pay half down before they start work and the other half after you accept the job. Reserve the right to get them to redo the job if it does not match the paint chip closely enough. Have them send a swatch of the dyed velvet before they send the whole thing. If it's not close enough to the paint chip, have them redo it and send you another swatch. Put all this in a contract both of you sign before you pay them anything. Otherwise, you will probably not get exactly what you want, they'll refuse you a refund, you'll think they're rude, and everyone will be dissatisfied. My spy has reported back that she spoke with the very helpful Silk Baron, who said that the silks were in fact silk pile and rayon ground. As I have not heard it this way round, I assume that in fact they are a silk ground with a rayon pile, the same as is available in England. No really, based on my bleach-test they ARE silk pile and rayon backing. Me and my sister import silk fabrics from China to EU and we visited several factories that were specialized in making silk velvets, but they told us they only do rayon pile and silk backing, no matter what amount of meters you offer. Another interesting issue is that if you don't buy directly from a factory, the dealer are able to tell you anything - they claim a polyester to be silk and so on. So if you're not very skilled at recognizing silk, you may be cheated. And maybe...some companies don't realize or realize too late. So, beware. We always check our fabrics for weight and silk percentage. The Silk Trading Company store in San Francisco at least used to have a 100% silk velvet, which I've seen and I believe their label. However, it was a heavy upholstery weight--if you used it for clothes, it would weigh like a brick. My bleach test suggests that it's not 100% silk - that the PILE is silk while the backing is not (which is the reverse of most silk-velvets one can buy at reasonable prices). I still bought my fabric from them, and they were very nice about it all, and the fabric arrived quickly. (It ships from LA, so I can't comment on the speed it gets across the Atlantic). The problem with burn testing is that rayon is sometimes hard to differentiate by smell and behaviour, but a bleach test will normally tell you straight away if it's rayon or silk. Under the microscope, you will see the striations of the silk (irregular, with small bits of sericin on the fibres) and you can compare them to rayon striations (which are very regular, seeing that it's pressed through a nozzle when the fibre is created, and no sericin of course). There is also a difference in thickness of an individal rayon fibre and a silk filament. The only place so far that I have been able to find easily obtainable 100% silk velvet is in Germany, a place called Gewand und Tand (very loosely translated: Garb and stuff). They sell white silk velvet, 140cm wide for ~59 (~US$70)/m, and I've analysed the fibre content under the microscope, it's the real deal! The one from the Silk trading company is indeed very heavy, but only the pile is silk, since they need their fabrics for upholstery and make the backing out of tough man-made fibres for that purpose. Since I don't do later periods (as in 17th century upwards) I can't speak for those velvets, but some early velvets (14th, 15th century) in the VA in London show a very low pile and beautiful sheen and that's even in a sample that has three different heights of cut and uncut velvet. The silk velvet from Germany has a low pile, but a wonderful sheen, which is nothing like the rayon pile. I got several samples to compare and I took it to the VA as well and it really looks the part... the only difference is that the original textiles have a pattern woven in different colours but I'm working on at least getting a two height cut pattern working even if the fabric will be one colour only. It's not too heavy, but with a nice lining, it drapes wonderfully. Hope this helps, if anyone is interested in the German source, I can post the link. Just as I suspected, the bleach test has shown that the velvet has a silk backing, and a non-silk pile. Lots of short nubbies left floating in the baby jar of bleach. I did not do a burn test. And the samples did not look encouraging as to the quality of silk blend velvet, it was very short, had sticky stuff on the backs of some samples, and rather stiffer than I recall my other samples of silk/rayon velvet, but I haven't hunted those down yet to compare directly. Although, even if what I've got is actually 100% silk, I have to say--I'm not thrilled with it. It doesn't look or feel very luxurious, has a short pile, and doesn't have much sheen at all. The silk velvet I handled from the 1880s has a very short pile as well. In fact it looked and felt just like a good quality cotton velveteen (washed and dried to soften.) I couldn't tell which direction the pile ran in the sample though as it was made up into a cap. I saw a documentary about Shakespeare at the same time and a bolt of crimson silk velvet was rolled on a table which again was low sheen, fairly stiff to the hand and again looked like a good quality velveteen on screen. They were showing fabric because Shakespeare got a certain amount of red fabric as did other people for some purpose (James' Coronation I think) they were showing what the various fabrics could have been, they thought it likely he got wool though rather than the silk velvet. Needless to say I prefer velveteen I can get to the silk velvet I can get for dress before the early 20thC. I haven't found a source of 100% silk velvet in England that I can afford. That's what the vast majority of what is sold actually is all around the world. If you can make burnout patterns, it's not pure silk. The silk will totally dissolve, the cellulose fibres will remain. At least after the first few hours. It'll break down eventually. Their Long Pile/Flat Velvet, 50 is 20%/80%. If they carry 100% silk velvet, I haven't seen it yet. As to the other store carrying 100% silk, I am willing to order a swatch, and submit it to a burn *and* bleach test, and see what happens. I'm looking for fabrics for my next project anyway. Speaking as someone who owns quite a number of original silk velvet garments from the 19th and early 20th centuries: The length of the pile, and the drape of the velvet, have nothing to do with the fiber content. The modern silk/rayon velvets currently popular for burnout designs have the same drape as, and don't look too different from, the silk chiffon velvets often used in the 1920s. Victorian velvets tend to be heavier. There is a type of (usually brown) silk velvet, or silk plush, which was heavily used to imitate sealskin for outer garments. It has a distinctly longer pile than chiffon velvet, and is much heavier in weight (and warmer). It is quite an attractive and plausible fake fur. A somewhat lighter and shorter-piled silk velvet was made in any number of colors for non-sealskin outer garments. It was also woven in designs onto silk satin backgrounds for the same purposes. Victorian dress velvets were shorter piled, closer to what we think of as a velveteen length, and somewhat lighter. Still, for a style with a lot of yardage, garments made from them can be quite heavy and hot. Although rayon does not have to be shiny, modern rayon velvets tend to be very shiny, excessively so for my taste. Silk velvet has a mild sheen, considerably less than the modern 100% rayon, and only slightly more than a good modern cotton velvet. The latter is a better approximation of a Victorian velvet than most rayon velvets.
