[H] Linux file server Novice Linux user

2024-04-11 Thread _ Winterlight
I want to use one of my old mini computers NUC quad core for a file
server, security cameras and HD homerun which front ends my TV antenna. Given
that windows 10 is 18 months away from ending I am thinking of turning to Linux
for the OS. Actually, I think October 2025 will be the best opportunity Linux
has ever had to capture a segment of the PC market both business and personal.
End users and business aren't going to want to throw away perfectly good
windows 10 computers. They may be willing to pay the $61 for one year of
updates but after that it gets expensive and you end up at the same starting
point. It is going to be a major issue come the end of Win 10

Linux Questions

Can I use a NTFS format for any drives ... this would be easier to deal with if
something went wrong and I had to access the drive from a windows PC?

I have on occasion installed various versions of Linux in virtual machines and
old PCs but I am a novice and I will struggle with it to learn how to manage it.
What current distribution of Linux would you recommend for this ?
Thanks

[H] PCWORLD Want to keep using Windows 10 safely? Microsoft wants $61

2024-04-03 Thread _ Winterlight
Microsoft's Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 past its support date now
have a price, and it's more than $400 to keep your PC patched until 2027.

Windows 11 had a rocky start, but it’s been getting better lately — good enough
that PCWorld’s March Hachman can finally bear it, in fact. But there are still
plenty of good reasons to stay on Windows 10 if you’re comfortable with it.
Unfortunately, security isn’t one of them. The OS will stop getting updated in
2025…unless you pay for extended security updates. And pay a lot.

Late last year we learned Microsoft will offer paid security updates past the
end of full support on October 14th, 2025. But the company didn’t mention any
prices. Now it has, and you might want to brace yourself. For consumers and
businesses who want Extended Security Updates (ESU) on Windows 10, they’ll need
to purchase a license similar to a standard Windows key, which will then unlock
the updates.

The price: $61. A year. And that’s only for the first year. “The price will
double every consecutive year, for a maximum of three years,” says Microsoft’s
information post. That would make year two (starting in October 2026) $122, and
year three (October 2027) a whopping $244.

What’s more, you can’t just hop on the train later to save some dough. If you
decide to enroll in the ESU program after October 2026 you’ll be charged for
the first year, enroll after October 2027 you’ll be charged for the first and
second year. Whenever you get the update, you’ll be paying a total of $427 for
security support through the end of the program. Ouch.

Licenses can be redeemed online in a browser, through Windows 365, or with an
old-fashioned 25-digit code. Businesses can get a 25 percent discount if they
buy volume ESU licenses through the Windows Autopatch system, bringing the
per-PC price down to $45 for year one. But it’s still an expensive proposition,
especially if you want to keep a network of hundreds of PCs ticking over nicely.

Needless to say, Windows 11 users will continue to receive free security
updates along with the regular maintenance and feature patches they’re used to.
And Microsoft is really hoping you’ll upgrade if you haven’t already. Though
previous patch versions of Windows 11 have gone out of support, there’s no
end-of-life date set for the OS as of yet. Windows 12 (or whatever Microsoft
calls it) is still on the horizon.

Ok this is SUPER WEIRD-the 9 key (and thus the left parentheses) started
working randomly today during the day for about 10 mins-I used both for like 10
mins today (tested it multiple times to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating) and
it was working fine!

Then a few mins after I tried it again and it wasn’t working again! So this
indicates that it’s likely some sort of weird software problem right? …or I
suppose it could be a weird random sticky hardware key problem…

Any idea here??

Re: [H] is there still a way to auto boot = log in to windows 10

2024-01-01 Thread _ Winterlight
It doesn't seem to work in Home ( I hate working with Home) because the user
name and password are a MS account = outlook email address and then MS turns
it into an abbreviation for the user who doesn't use a password but a pin. None
of which is accepted by autologin. It is as hopelessly confusing as it can be.
But I am glad I have this so I can use it on Pro versions with normal users.
Did I mention I hate Windows Home?

I am dealing with a windows 10 home laptop. It seems like MS has defeated every
way users have come up with to auto log into windows. They want you to have an
authenticated account and they want you to log in every time. Does anybody know
a working method for 2024. I would like to upgrade this laptop to PRO. Does

[H] Microsoft will charge consumers for extended Windows 10 support

2023-12-06 Thread _ Winterlight
If you're that unwilling to move to WIndows 11, Microsoft plans to charge you
to remain.

If you’re loath to give up Windows 10 when support expires in about two years,
there’s some good news and bad news: Microsoft is extending your support
options — but you’ll be forced to pay an additional fee.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. That
will still mean, as it usually does, that Microsoft will release no new
features after that date.

What it usually also means is that Microsoft won’t release any new security
patches after a product exits its support window. That typically translates to
an end-of-life scenario: Without security updates, your use of Windows 10 or
another product is subject to any bugs or vulnerabilities that are discovered.
You use it at your own risk, basically.

Microsoft sometimes offers an escape hatch. As it has done previously,
businesses will be offered an Extended Security Update — a chance to pay
Microsoft for additional bug fixes and patches while it transitions over to
Windows 11. What’s different is that consumers will now be offered the chance
to buy an Extended Security Update, too — the first time that Microsoft has
allowed consumers to do this.

“While we strongly recommend moving to Windows 11, we understand there are
circumstances that could prevent you from replacing Windows 10 devices before
the EOS date. Therefore, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates,”
Microsoft said in a blog
post.

“Like the Windows 7 ESU program, your organization will be able to purchase a
yearly subscription to security updates. The yearly commitment is renewable for
three years. Devices enrolled in ESUs will receive monthly security updates to
keep these Windows 10 PCs secure.”

Though that statement refers to the business subscriptions, consumers are being
offered the same deal. The ESU program just includes critical and/or important
security updates on a monthly basis, but no new features, or customer-requested
security improvements or features. More importantly, Microsoft will not provide
technical support, either.

Businesses will be provided Windows 10 ESUs if they subscribe to Windows 365,
Microsoft’s Windows-in-the-cloud solution. But a Microsoft representative
confirmed that this loophole won’t be applied to the consumer ESU subscriptions.

The question that Microsoft isn’t answering is, how much will this all cost?
Microsoft is going to make you wait before it answers. We do know that
Microsoft absolutely loves
subscriptions,
so this decision doesn’t come as an absolute surprise. And yes, you will have
to eventually move to Windows 11. But there will at least be a safety net,
though it will cut into your wallet.

Re: [H] P9X79_WS with i7-4930K has failed me

2023-12-05 Thread _ Winterlight
Thanks Greg! I appreciate the offer. However, I was looking at used boards on
EBAY when I discovered I could buy a new BIOS chip for 14 bucks...I was
surprised. So I ordered one last night. I think that may be my problem because
right after the board went out I was unable to even restore the BIOS with the
rescue flash feature. I completely agree with you as to the age of the
platform. But it is the computer I use with my TV to stream, record, browse,
and manage my security cameras. It has been very nice for that purpose and it
is customized and tweaked for my needs and I am lazy and don't want to redo
everything. So if the new BIOS chip doesn't do the trick I will take you up on
your offer.

On Black Friday I did buy a replacement for my TV PC on Amazon. I have used a
quad core Celeron NUC now for years on a kitchen PC and I think they are great
so I was looking to buy a I5 version to replace my broken system. But I ended
up buying this Beelink SER5 MAX, Mini PC Ryzen 7 5800H (8C/16T, Turbo 4.4GHz),
32GB DDR4 RAM 500GB PCIe3.0 SSD Desktop Mini Computers Support 4K@60Hz Triple
Display/WiFi 6/BT5.2/DP+HDMI+USB-C/USB3.2/RJ45 LAN on sale for for $309...now
priced at
$459https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYJKD2BX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details=1

I know nothing about Beelink or Ryzen CPUs but I am amazed that they could put
this much tech and performance in such a small package = 4 X 4x2.5 inches.
This supports three 4k monitors and I could use this as my primary computer. I
haven't even tried it yet. I don't know if this was a good deal or not. Are
these reliable and what is the deal with the cores. What is meant by 8 cores \
16T mean? Is this 16 virtual cores?

Truthfully this is probably the most correct answer--while a fine system in its
day, the P9X79 platform is easily eclipsed even with the most budget-friendly
builds today.

That being said, I just went and found my old P9X79 WS board. It's been a few
years since it's been in service, but you are welcome to it if you want to try

After 10 years my E6896_P9X79_WS with i7-4930K has failed me. My original
setup was running fine but one day it wouldn’t boot and the board reported a
CPU error. I cleaned the dust off the board and did a major cleaning of the CPU
fan and heat sink and it seemed to run just fine. I had a couple extra RAM
SIMMS so I decided to install them. What I had installed was 4 CRUCIAL DDR 3
4GB SIMM running at 1866. What I added into bank two was two 8GB CRUCIAL DDR3
running at 1600. It didn’t seem to recognize all the RAM so I went into the
BIOS to try different settings. I enabled Auto Memory frequency settings saved
and exited out. This is when my troubles began.

The PC hung at post. I saw nothing on the screen just a black screen. At first
I thought something must of got corrupt so I tried auto flashing the BIOS but
it wasn’t working normally so I tried clearing the bios with the on board pin,
and finally I pulled everything off the board, removed it from the case and let
it sit in it’s box for a month. Then I cleaned everything and put it back
together but same problem.

It occurred to me that maybe the CPU burned out when the fan slowed down and
then my memory bios adjustment finished it off. So I purchased a used but
tested CPU on Ebay and tried again. Same issue. I hate to just throw this board
away but I am out of ideas. Anybody have any ideas to jump start the board?
Thanks

unfortunately these are the same as other postings. The EULA will not accept

Almost all the iso s posted were created off a hard drive instead of the actual

I am curious what others think about the October 25, 2025 end of life for
Windows 10. The usual process is to update to Windows 11 however, in the vast
majority of cases that won't be possible. Without the special chip on board you
can't run windows 11 so I guess they expect you to throw you old laptop or
desktop away and get a new one. I have a number of laptops and a couple of
desktops that all are used for different jobs so I guess in 2 and a half years
I will have to throw them away start over even if they are running perfectly
fine. If we spiral down into a recession I find it hard to believe that
corporations and even government ancencies will be happy about filling recycle
centers with obsolete computers at a scale we have never seen before

What does the collective think about this?

Best guess is they're removing support for anything older than TLS 1.2. Two
conceivable options:

To the degree that you have control over the protocols supported by your hosted
mail solution, they may be force-disabling any protocol older than TLS 1.2.

More likely, they've monitored the negotiations between your client and their
systems and noticed you are negotiating something less than TLS 1.2.

I don't think Eudora uses schannel, so the protocols you have enabled in
Control Panel are not applicable. Further, I don't believe Eudora supports TLS
1.2 - so you may be forced to find some sort of workaround
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/hermesmail/files/) or finally give up on
Eudora as your email client.

Those instructions are just for PCs on the same network.

For remote access across the internet teamviewer, logmein, or similar is
what you'll need.

If you want to get all fancy you could go with setting up VPN between PCs
using something like hamachi.

I have never used remote PC in windows 10 Pro. I have used it with Windows 7
Pro and Teamviewer for Win7 and 8 but never with 10 Pro. Now I have need to do
so. I want to be able to log on to my workstation from my laptop in a remote
location across the NET ... not from the LAN. Both computers use the same
version of windows 10. So I look up MS instructions and get this
How to use Remote Desktop

Windows 10

Use Remote Desktop on your Windows, Android, or iOS device to connect to a
Windows 10 PC from afar.
Set up the PC you want to connect to so it allows remote connections:
Make sure you have Windows 10 Pro. To check, go to Start > Settings > System
> About and look for Edition. For info on how to get it, go to Upgrade Windows
10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.
When you're ready, select Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop, and
turn on Enable Remote Desktop.
Make note of the name of this PC under How to connect to this PC. You'll need
this later.
Use Remote Desktop to connect to the PC you set up:
On your local Windows 10 PC: In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote
Desktop Connection, and then select Remote Desktop Connection. In Remote
Desktop Connection, type the name of the PC you want to connect to (from Step
1), and then select Connect.
On your Windows, Android, or iOS device: Open the Remote Desktop app (available
for free from Microsoft Store, Google Play, and the Mac App Store), and add the
name of the PC that you want to connect to (from Step 1). Select the remote PC
name that you added, and then wait for the connection to complete.

---

I am planning on using on a laptop using my Google Fi account hotspot but I am
confused because these instructions don't explain how it finds the named PC
without a IP address or am I suppose to be using an app.

So should I use a Windows 10 App to do this securely... are there additional
security measures I need to be aware of ?

Thanks

I'm using 5.1 in Win10 using the onboard sound on an Asus motherboard.

A couple of things I've noticed - I tried to use HDMI to a HDMI switch
(I'm feeding input to my projector from a Wii, Xbox, and my HTPC) but
because the projector identifies itself at 2.0, I couldn't get 5.1 that

I have a set of analog 5.1 speakers that I haven't used for quite a while. I
recently built a media box for my TV out of an old Asus P9X79 with a I7-4930K,
Nvidia GTX660, 16GB of DDR3 Crucial RAM running Windows 10 Pro. It works
well...very quick and meets all my needs except one. For audio I am currently
using a Samsung sound bar with sub woofer on my TV. It does the job but I have
a set of analog 5.1 speakers that I would like to use for movies and gaming.
the MB supports this, the Asus Realtek drivers support this but unfortunately
Windows 10 does not seem to support anything but 2+1 speakers. It was
apparently a problem that MS was going to fix and never did. And every hack and
work around has been defeated by MS which wants to defeat any attempt to use
this obsolete hardware or so I have read.

Does anybody know of a solution? And just out of curiosity if 5.1 and 7.1
aren't supported anymore just what is the new standards?

[H] Preserving Windows 8.1 with Media Center

2021-10-08 Thread _ Winterlight
I own two LIVA-X mini computers. Dual core Celerons with mSata drives and
DDR3 soldered in RAM as well onboard Intel HD graphics. They are both used as
TV DVR media players and they do that job very well. One is running Win10 Pro
and the other is running Win8.1 with Media Center. I have kept the 8.1 with
Media center because it works well OTA without a Silicon Dust annual
subscription. so if that went south I could always keep using MC to record.

These mini PCs have identical components however the 8.1 LIVA has a bigger
msata card and twice the ram and is more suited to Win10. The one running Win10
was actually designed for WIn8. The one I have windows 10 on actually has a
special msata drive soldered to the board for 8.1. I originally ran Windows 7
with Media Center on it and didn't become aware of the special drive until I
did the Win10 free upgrade. It just appeared. There are other issues as well
but what I want to do is swap the two OSs.

I know I won't have any trouble running wiping the drive of the current Windows
Win8.1 computer and installing 10. It has twice the RAM and drive space and I
already did a dual boot install that was independent of the current 8.1
license so WIn10 is linked to the BIOS'

What I would like to do with the current Win10 computer is wipe the msata drive
and then restore a image backup of the 8.1 MC OS onto it. The components are
identical except for the serial numbers.. The reason I want to do it this way
is because 8.1 MC is no longer licensed or supported by Microsoft. I could do
a new install of 8.1 but there is no way to reinstall or bring back MC. I know
because I have already been though this.

Do you think this approach would work?

[H] Old android phones and security risk

2021-09-25 Thread _ Winterlight
I have a new Pixal 5a 5G phone. My old phones are Moto G5 which I liked a lot
and performed my needs well. However, I decided to update for 5G, and because
Google Fi is my cell provider and using a Google phone gets me additional
benefits. Plus my G5s are at Android 8 and my new Pixal is at Android 11 soon
to be 12 and Google guarantees security updates for three years for my new
phone.

I am still using my G5s. They are smaller, easier to put in the pocket and I am
not that concerned if they get lost, stolen or break. One I use exclusively in
my vehicle for a GPS, audio player and I will eventually set it up as a dash
cam. It doesn't have a simm and is Wifi only and I run a Google voice number
with it.
I am using a second G5 currently without a SIMM although I am thinking of
adding a simm, but for now it is a wifi only phone tied my NetTalk Landline
number as well as a podcast audio and TV listening device when I am working in
the yard, shop etc. I bought it on EBAY $50 when I thought I had lost my
other G5. It is in new condition and if I get a simm would make a nice second
phone.

My G5s have long ago stopped getting any kind of android or security update. I
have not been concerned about this because when I used one as my phone it was
with a Google Fi Simm which comes with a free VPN. My question is are these
phones a significant security risk and if so in what way and should I even be
concerned now or in the future.

[H] time for upgrade

2021-03-18 Thread _ Winterlight
I have had my ASUS E6896_P9X79_WS board with Intel i7-4930K , 64GB of Crucial
Ballistic DDR 3 and a Nvidia 1070 going on 8 years. It has served me well but
in the last year I have had to replace the 850w Seasonic PS, the Thermaltake
CPU water cooling and now a memory dimm has gone bad which caused all sorts of
corrupt files. I am not a gamer. What I need is rock solid dependable
performance and if I want to play a game or edit video it is no problem.

So now I am thinking maybe I should consider doing a major upgrade of a Asus
Workstation motherboard, modern Intel CPU, and DDR4 ram. I know AMD is all the
hot CPU now but I prefer the stability and compatibility inherent with Intel
products. I gave myself a $1500 - $2000 budget and went looking to see what I
could do.

The problem I am having is the multitude of choices. It looks like there are
six Asus WS boards to choose from a huge assortment of I7 and I9 CPUs and I
will probably stick with Crucial for the RAM. Any guidance from the collective
is appreciated.

Re: [H] 1000Mbs up and 50Mbs down...or is it

2021-02-25 Thread _ Winterlight
7 months ago I was paying 55 for 100 down. I moved here in 2017 from southern
CA where I had a COX account that was charging me $55 for 25 down and 2 up and
an awful lot for cable TV with box rental. When I arrived here I was paying a
similar amount but for 100 down and 5 up. But my TV kept going up until last
May it was over 190 with internet and that is when I said the hell with this. I
put an antenna up which gave me all the Networks and 5 PBS channels. Then I
signed up for PHILO for 20 bucks a month and I already had Prime video and it
did the job. I also jumped my speed up to 200Mbs so I could get a higher data
limit.

But then American competition kicked in and a new provider TEW came to town and
started laying down fiber optic cable and offering great 2 year deal bundles
if you signed up in advance. Cable One changed it's name to Sparklight and
seems to be getting out of the TV business or the TV business is leaving them
and now they seem to be concentrating on internet. I found out about the 1000
for $75 by accident before they even announced it and I am probably one of the
first customers. I was one of the very first customers to sign up for cable
when I was in CA. I called the second I saw them installing fiber on my street.
It was uncapped, wide open and no restrictions. When I inquired about the speed
they told me that it would depend on how many people on my street would be
accessing it. That lasted about six months but it was a hell of a ride. I am
hoping this is a similar experience.

1000mb here is over $200/mo, I can't justify it when I already have 60mb

[H] 1000Mbs up and 50Mbs down...or is it

2021-02-24 Thread _ Winterlight
I would never of thought that I would spend the money or even justify a need
for 1000Mbs internet service but at $75 per month with Sparklight I couldn't
say no. However, once it was turned on I discovered some realties. From the
beginning I was not getting more then 400Mbs. So Sparklight investigated and
sent a tech out but by the time he got here they had fixed the problem in the
line and the end of my coaxial tested 940Mbs. However, the tech pointed out
that my modem can't actually deliver 1000Mps even if it was advertised as such
my existing Motorola 24x8 Cable Modem, Model MB7621, DOCSIS 3.0. Approved by
Comcast Xfinity, Cox, Charter Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, and More. Downloads
1,000
tested at 600 to 800 direct from the modem.

But once it was plugged into my Ubiquity Edge X router all speeds dropped from
175 to 400 max. After a few days emailing Ubiquity support it was determined
that firmware updates had disabled offload modules and the router was governing
the speeds. Offloading is used to execute functions of the router using the
hardware directly, instead of a process of software functions. The benefit of
offloading in EdgeOS is increased performance and throughput by not depending
on the CPU for forwarding decisions. So once I was back to default settings the
router shot up close to what the modem was delivering. Fortunately my unmanaged
switches have performed as expected. I was beginging to worry that I would have
to replace them.

I had bought my modem in November from Amazon, and used it on a 200Mbs account
but it was advertised at 1000Mbs so they were very good about taking it back
and allowing me to put the money toward this MOTOROLA MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable
Modem with 2.5G Ethernet, Approved for Comcast Xfinity Gigabit and More. I
won't be using the 2.5G but it will future proof it. Reviews show that people
are getting a 1000 plus with this modem so it will be interesting to see what
my performance is once it arrives.

So the moral of this story is that if you get a 1000Mbs account don't assume
your hardware is up to the task!

[H] can't load pdf file from within excel workbook

Last week I did the Acrobat windows auto update to remove flash and now I can
not load pdf files from excel hyperlinks within a workbook. When I click on the

I have spent the week trying to figure out how to disable this. Anybody have a
solution?

Anybody know of a good excel forum. I use excel 2010 to manage everything. With
all these new security updates I keep running into issues like this that are
really annoying and I could use some help from time to time.

[H] 1000Mbps down unlimited data

2021-02-19 Thread _ Winterlight
My small city has become pretty competitive for internet and TV service.
Yesterday my Cable One account, which has now become Sparklight, offered me a
1000Mbps down unlimited data , with 50Mbps up for 75 bucks a month and I jumped
at it in as much as I was paying 65 bucks a month for 200Mbps down with 700GB
cap and 10Mbps up. Once they made the upgrade I started speed testing. Before
the upgrade I always test 190Mbps to 230Mbps down and 10Mbps up which is what I
was paying for. However, since the upgrade I always get 50Mbps upload test
results but the fastest I have gotten on download is 382Mbps and most of the
tests result are 175 to 250Mbps. I have tested this result directly off my
Ubiquity Edge gigabit Router and even directly off my six month old Motorola
24x8 Cable Modem, Model MB7621, DOCSIS 3.0. Both of these will handle
1000Mbps. I have tested on multiple PCs with Intel gigabit Nics.

So is this low download speed a failure of Sparklight to provide 1000Mbps or
because of a limitation of my NIC ? In essence the network can now deliver 300
down to multiple PCs simultaneously but an individual NIC cannot achieve
1000Mbps down... is that what is going on?

[H] SSL and subdomains

2021-02-08 Thread _ Winterlight
I wrote about this a few weeks ago. I have a website hanging at Google but
hosted at Network Solutions. It is a 100 percent personal site that I use to
post stuff to friends, and business needs. It is not for marketing and in fact
I don't want anybody uninvited to view it and have a robots.txt for that
purpose. I knew that I had to tell my browser to ignore security and proceed
because it has no SSL Certificate. Chris advised me to use Letsencrypt but of
course Network solutions doesn't support it. Network Solutions says you can use
third party but they will not support but Letsencrypt says it doesn't work
because Network solutions won't enable it.

I am stuck with network solutions for the next two years and they did give me a
good deal on the hosting with email support so I decided I would just pay
Networks solution... it was on sale for 42 bucks a year and I had to buy 2
years. Simple, get it done and move on, or so I thought. I didn't realize that
it would not certify my two Subdomains which are there for emergencies. I need
them operational more then I need the website opeerational. I immediately
realized this and was able to cancel because I am not going to pay for SSL for
the domain and two Subdomains. which would cost more then my hosting plan.

However, it turns out the two Subdomains, which are extremely simple single
text page can be accessed without the browser warning or blocking for security
reasons. I have tried this with friends and various providers on different
phones and computers. My question is why would the Subdomains be allowed to go
through without the SSL Certificate or any kind of warning or hinderence? I
don't get it?

Re: [H] Web site security issue

2021-01-26 Thread _ Winterlight
Ignore my last post as apparently there are five hosting companies in the USA
calling themselves Network Solutions and I am with the original one. I just got
off the phone with them and they say they won't stop you from using Lets
Encrypt but they won't help you either or support it. So for a novice like
me it is easier to just pay them the 22 bucks a year for two years knowing I
will have 100 percent uptime and I don't have to screw with it. I do have a
cheap reliable hosting account with email so being with them has it's
advantages...for now. But Thanks for the help.

You don't say if you're accessing the site via HTTP or HTTPS - I'd guess
HTTPS. You need to have a valid certificate for HTTPS to work
automatically for all clients (and some can't even be made to accept an
invalid certificate manually). There's no way for a site to tell the
client "no this certificate is valid" - or bad sites would just do that
and malware would be even worse.

You'll have to get a valid certificate for the site and configure the
netsol host to use it. This is a great application for a free Let's
Encrypt cert instead of a paid certificate (which I'm almost certain
Network Solutions would be happy to sell you otherwise). You may be
better off looking for a different host that does LE out of the box and
just leaving DNS with netsol if they don't offer LE today.

I have a website hosted with network solutions. It is the cheapest one they
sell. I don't want it to come up on search and I have robots.txt in the root

I don't even have an entry page as I use it primarily to post accessible data

I think some of my friends are having trouble with my posted links due to a

Well, I for one prefer email. Email allows one to include a lot of data in a
short space and it does not require an immediate response. While email lists
have declined forums have become the support mechanism for thousands of tech
companies and I don't see that changing to voice and video chats any time soon.

Happy New Year everyone!

So we've a few folks who've joined so far...anyone else? Think email lists
will be pretty dead and chat apps (voice or just txt or both) will be where
everyone is going shortly...so let's get with the times!

There's a desktop PC app and it syncs with the mobile app (which is real nice)
and you can get notifications, and like I said there is a voice channel I set
up too, so might be nice to hear folks voices for once.

Let's get more folks on! :)

Re: [H] SSH in Windows 10 PRO

I finally got my Unifi UAPs sorted with all three UAPS connected updated and 99
percent WIFI user experience. Chris I have a couple of questions. My setup is
two wired UAPs and one unwired.

Does MESH only occur when dealing with wired to unwired and it is suppose to be
automatic with Unifi?

My unwired UAP resides in the attic above my garage. I have Powerlink network

You'll want to reset the unifi.

I've encountered this in the past. If you have a unifi device that is too
old your management server won't be able to send the latest firmware or
adopt it. The fix is to reset the thing to factory defaults and then do
the manual firmware update. It's annoying, but not really that difficult.

Re: [H] SSH in Windows 10 PRO

thanks. but the problem is that even though I can see the SSH authentication
user name and password in the Unifi configuration SSH won't let me log in the
credentials or anything else I have tried.

Heads upIf anybody has Unifi UAPs do not upgrade to the 4.3x firmware. I am
not the only person having issues.

Use SSH is easy to use:

1. open command prompt

2. type 'ssh r...@server.com'

where root = user name, server.com = domain name of server

It will ask for a password for user root.

I use it every day to connect to Solaris server.

On the LAN you’ll be a 1Gbps between all machines. Any connections to the

I have a strange network problem that I believe I have traced to my five year
old Netgear Modem. Intermitent connections between devices or no connection, no
internet. It has gotten worse over time where now the LAN is unusable. Is it
possible for a bad modem to corrupt the router to the point where it can't even
handle device to device connections? I keep having to reset the router only to
have it reappear. I have replaced the router only to have the same issue. Is
Mororola DOCSIS 3 the best choice now?

[H] Disconnected

2020-11-02 Thread _ Winterlight
I have a Ubiquiti Networks Unifi 802.11ac Dual-Radio PRO Access Point
(UAP-AC-PRO-US) connected in the middle of my house. Last Summer I bought a
second one and connected it outside in my backyard under the eves in a
protected location. It just connected automatically...nothing to installing it.
These two Unifis are plugged in to the LAN and were working fine.I just bought
a Third one to mount in my attic over the garage to cover the front of the yard
and my garage. My intention is to use it like an wireless extender but first I
needed to adopt it .

I started up Unifi Network and saw my existing two UAPs GREEN connected. I was
informed there was a new version to install so I did that. When it finished
installing I closed Unifi Network. I then plugged the new UAP into LAN and
power using the power block. I started up UNIFI again.

Unlike my previous experience the new Unifi wasn't automatically adopted. I can
see all three of the UAPs. The oldest one is GREEN, the second UAP is now
showing as RED Disconnected and the new UAP is showing as needs adoption. I
manually performed the adoption. Now I had the first UAP and the new UAP
showing GREEN connected. I still showed the RED Disconnected on the second
one. The second UAP was showing GREEN prior to starting all this.

I checked my connections to power and the LAN on the second UAP which was
reporting RED disconnected. The power bar blue LED was illuminated. The LAN was
plugged in. Outside the Blue ring was illuminated. So it was connected. Next I
unplugged the power bar from the LAN and the POE and pulled the plug. I let it
sit for 10 minutes and plugged it back in. The Blue Power LED and Ring LED
illuminated. But when I looked at Unifi but it was still RED disconnected.

I then did a LAN IP scan. The new UAP and the First UAP IP numbers were there
but NOT the second UAP showing RED Disconnected so it really wasn't online.

Finally I unplugged all three of them. I turned on the First One and was
informed there was a BIOS update so I did that. When it finished I plugged in
the the second and third UAPs. But the second one is still RED disconnected.
Then I plugged the third UAP back in. Now that one is RED disconnected. Only
my orignal UAP is green and connected. All Three UAPs Power LED and Ring LED
are bright blue.

I did a system drive image backup last night so I could just restore that and
hook things back as there were but they may not work either now that there has
been a BIOS upgrade. Maybe I am not understanding what "connected" means. So
How do I get these connected and sorted. Thanks

In order to use an NVMe drive you need an NVMe port. Your current
motherboard doesn't have one. Using one of these boards vs a built in NVMe
port really doesn't have any performance differences. It's all about
getting the connection to the 4 PCIe lanes.

Frankly, the way NVMe works I find very funny.

Originally, we had PATA drives. They used a parallel connection, with 40
(later 80) wire connectors allowing data to go across. Then we switched to
SATA connectors (Serial ATA), which is essentially using one very fast
connection to transport data to/from the hard drives.

The original PATA was 33mbps, then the 80 wire PATA was 66. Then SATA came
and did 150, then SATA2 at 300, then SATA3 at 600. That's pretty much
maxed out the connection speed possible over a SATA connection.

So, they got the big idea, lets parallel the serial connection, putting 4
SATA links together for a total of 2400mbps. Thus, you have NVMe using 4
SATA3 connections at the same time.

Aren't computers fun?

OK. I will have Unifi in my house, a Unifi in my exterior back yard and I also
have a Netgear Range Extender WN1000RP_IG plugged into an outlet in my garage.
You could draw a straight line from the Netgear extender through the interior
Unifi and to the exterior Unifi.

The range extenders' SSID = UNIFI SSID _EXT which was set up by Netgear
software. It uses the same security and password as the UNIFI. The range
extender uses a separate IP address.

So should I change the Netgear extender SSID to match the UNIF by removing the
_EXT or does it matter? Thanks Chris!

You do this by plugging into your normal network.

When you launch the Unifi controller software you can adopt the new
controller. You'll need to have it connected through ethernet when you do
that.

Once the device is adopted and provisioned you can unplug it and use the

Yep, my first thought too on the power supply. I had a box doing that
randomly so I hooked in an older but good power supply and all the problems
stopped. My belief is that occasionally the power would dip just enough to
cause problems. The power supply that I pulled tested fine with the 2
testers I had but it was actually going bad.

I also had a weird problem that was similar where another box would reboot
or shut down. Tried swapping PS but still the same problem.. I had a 4TB
secondary HDD that had some movies on it and when I would try to
access them the speed seemed way too slow. I pulled the drive just as a
test and all the problems stopped. The drive passed all tests but had some
major pauses and slowdowns in access times during tests but always passed.

My Asus P9 X79WS with I7 has been giving me headaches for months. It runs at
default there is no overclock. It uses Crucial DDR3 Ballistic Sport Ram and a
EVGA 1070 video card.
It runs for a while and then with a reboot it hangs and won’t post.
Eventually it started shutting down on it’s own and, after I replaced the CPU
cooler it seemed to behave. It has been running good for the last couple of
weeks until yesterday’s MS windows 10 update. It does the update, then reboots
and stops at the ASUS logo and won’t go on and won’t go to BIOS.
I have pulled everything but the 1070 video card out in an attempt to discover
the problem. RAM that checks out with Memtest… I have even swapped the RAM out
trying to see if was RAM but the RAM is good. I removed all drives but no
change.
I tried clearing the BIOS, and then a re-flash of the current BIOS. Nothing
helped.
Anybody go through anything like this or have any ideas or has this board just
gone bad.

[H] need an app for video calling

we are talking live. I use a Android Moto G5s and he has a newer Apple phone.
He is a novice. On his laptop he uses his quicken program which I set up for
him and uses chrome and gmail but that is it. On his apple phone he texts, he
uses the phone, internet browsing but I don't think he has ever even installed

What app can be used to accomplish this with out a lot of configuration = a

[H] Hosting ...windows to Linux

2020-07-25 Thread _ Winterlight
I have a domain hosted at google. I just switched from windows hosting at
Godaddy to Linux hosting at Network solutions. It is a very simple personal
account and no real website per say consisting of text files, a couple of
subdomains..i.e... reference stuff I keep online.

I downloaded what was on the godaddy windows hosting site. So instead of
putting all the files and folders in the root directory of a windows hosting
account I just put them in htdocs folderis this correct? Does the fact that
the windows site was created with front page matter. Once I copy those files
should the site start working normally? I ask because it is not working and I
am wondering if the reason is that the site hasn't updated yet ... I purchased
the hosting account yesterday... or is it something about my files?

But the first thing I need to know is did I transfer the files correctly?

[H] Time to replace my CPU cooler

2020-07-03 Thread _ Winterlight
After seven and a half years my CPU cooler = Thermaltake WATER2.0 Pro
Closed-Loop finally died. I am planning on going air. I have Intel Core i7
4930K on a Asus P9X79-E WS. Stock is 3.4Ghz with 3.9 boost and I would like to
be able to run 4.2 which is what the Asus Auto Overclock sets it to. So what
cooler should I be looking at? Thanks!

Re: [H] liquid cooling ?

2020-05-19 Thread Winterlight

If you are thinking about cooling your CPU it is
easy because it is a closed system with a
radiator, fan and, plate to screw down to your
CPU.You install, run and pretty much forget
about.It. However it is considerably more
expensive then air and really not needed if you don't over clock.

If you are thinking about a whole case cooling
system that cools down everything quietly... CPU
GPU RAM Hard drive then you probably want a case
with built in radiator. You will need hoses, a
pump and cooling plate attachments in a kit
form. It is not a closed system, requires
maintenance, can leak, will evaporate and require
replenishment and, is something you will be
fiddling with until you find the right balance. I
have not done one but it sounds like way too much
trouble and cost unless you are running at the
extreme edge of performance and are troubled by fan noise.

I have had a Thermaltake 120 dual fan on my

Howerver, that one and all those you mention are

Should fit the bill, even a 120mm one.

But I highly suggest a beQuiet or Noctua cooler instead. It will last
longer and give similar performance.

Ok...but I have to move my hosting account somewhere come June

I have been with Godaddy for over two decades. But ever since
Godaddy went public the company has been on a downward slope as far
as user value is concerned. Over a period of time they have uped
their prices and removed their benefits and customer value. In the
last couple weeks it took three different tech support agents to
figure out and solve a problem with my hosting account. They created
the problem when they moved my account from one server to another,
and just let me hang for a month. The first two calls were with
incompetent agents who should be sent back to school. The third and
final agent knew what he was doing and yesterday quickly diagnosed
and fixed the problem. But my hosting account did not work properly
for a month, not to mention the time I spent on the phone with
support. A month can be devastating to a business.

Today I got an email notice that one of my domains will loose free
email next month. In fact ALL free email accounts will be gone. They
are staggering turning them this year so they don't get hit by
millions of people all at once. Even domains that have paid hosting
accounts loose their free email accounts and will be required to pay
$60 a year for EACH user name. I have eight user names on my hosted domaine!

So now I am looking for a place that has an established reputation to
move my accounts which is going to be a big hassle. To that end I am
thinking Network solutions. They provide a 1000 email users with
hosting... just like Godaddy use to do. They seem to offer more for
less although I fear they will eventually follow suit with Godaddy.

Anybody have experience with Network Solutions or any thoughts on
what is happening with Godaddy?

[H] PLESK

2020-01-26 Thread Winterlight
I own a domain that is at Godaddy. I have hosting account for it and
have had it for over a decade. I don't use it for much now but I do
have subdomains and I like to ftp in with mp3 files..like lectures or
pod casts so I can listen to them when I hike. I was notified that
Godaddy moved my site to a new server... this has happened many
times. However, once they did it I could not stream my mp3 files. I
called support and she tells me it is because I nopw have a PLESK
server with a 200 mb data base and anything over that shuts down the
server... but why could I use everything but the mp3 files...she had no ansers.

I had around 2GB on my so called unlimited hosting account. Ok to
solve the problem I got rid of everything except 160MB including a
single 5mb mp3. Then I waited a week to try and no... it still
doesn't work. Then today I had to ftp a new htm text file into one of
my sub domains.. now that doesn't work outside of the
PLESK management console I just get a not at this address page...
just like the mp3.

Godaddy led me to believe if I reduced the size of the site that
would solve me problem for now and recommenced when I renew switch to
linux for more and bigger data bases. It did not work. None of this
makes sense to me and right now I just need my new htm page to work.
All the original files...except the mp3 still work but anything new
like a simple text html file added to a subdomain for my dogs
emergency information does not work unless I load it in a browser
from Goaddays PLESK management page.

The new Godaddy and their text support sucks so could somebody who
understands this explain it to me and tell me what I have to do to
get my simple site working again. Much appreciated.

It is a very old Thinkpad X41 Tablet... Intel Centrino 1.5Ghz with
2GB of RAM and a SSD. It is not good for much but I still use it as
a countdown clock, timer, geomap and to display a SD security camera.
It is plugged into a Calvery plug in external USB drive bay that is
handy if I want to wipe a drive. I think I will just unplug the NIC
unless I need to transfer files. I don't really think it is at risk
because I never use it for anything online except to update the
clock. It will run some distros of Linux but I don't really have a
need for that. IBM Thinkpads usually end up dying when the fan dies
or starts making noise.

I have a old Win7 laptop. I leave it on for a countdown timer and other
simple tasks. I don't need or want any internet connection.
What is the easiest way to disconnect it from internet but keep it connected

I thought of doing that but won't it kill access to the router and
