Thank you all for the responses to a book on Parashot ha Shavua written by
a variety of authors including architects, musicians, etc.

I was delighted that one of you found the book for my friend. It is called*

Again, thank you to all that replied.

2023-12-27 Thread Marjorie Gann via Hasafran
The book doesn't ring a bell, but the term "architect" made me think of
Rabbi Michael Hattin, who is an architect-turned-rabbi. He has written his
own commentary, and the anthology you remember might have taken one of his
chapters. When he talks about the mishkan and other biblical construction
projects, his architectural knowledge is prominent. You might google under
his name.

Each portion is written by a different Jewish person to his/her knowledge.
She remembers one commentary was written by an architect.. She bought it

Does that ring a bell to anyone?

Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for a book of ethical questions for high school students

2023-06-16 Thread Sherry Wasserman via Hasafran
Linda, Have you looked at:

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices (6-Volume Set) Rabbis Elliot N. Dorff, Danya
Ruttenberg, Louis E. Newman, eds. Includes titles

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Body

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Money

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Power

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Sex and Intimacy

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: War and National Security

Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Social Justice.

This JPS ethics series deals with some of the most critical moral issues of our
time. Each volume presents hypothetical cases on specific topics, followed by
traditional and contemporary sources. Supplementing these are brief essays,
written by contributors of various ages, backgrounds, and viewpoints to provoke
lively thought and discussion. These voices from Jewish tradition and today’s
Jewish community present us with new questions and perspectives, encouraging us
to consider our own moral choices in a new light.

The Jewish family ethics textbook ;Scheindlin, Neal S.
2021

"The Jewish Family Ethics Textbook guides teachers and students of all ages and
backgrounds in mining classical and modern Jewish texts to inform decision
making on hard choices"- Judaism offers us unique—and often divergent—insights
into contemporary moral quandaries. How can we use social media without hurting
others? Should people become parents through cloning? Should doctors help us
die?

The first ethics book to address social media and technology ethics through a
Jewish lens, along with teaching the additional skills of analyzing classical
Jewish texts, The Jewish Family Ethics Textbook guides teachers and students of
all ages in mining classical and modern Jewish texts to inform ethical
decision-making. Both sophisticated and accessible, the book tackles challenges
in parent-child relationships, personal and academic integrity, social media,
sexual intimacy, conception, abortion, and end of life. Case studies, largely
drawn from real life, concretize the dilemmas. Multifaceted texts from
tradition (translated from Hebrew and Aramaic) to modernity build on one
another to shed light on the deliberations. Questions for inquiry, commentary,
and a summation of the texts’ implications for the case studies deepen and open
up the dialogue.

 Linda,

There's a series- not new but still relevant, I think, called You be the Judge.
It has some ethical questions in it. Although I've used it with younger kids,
like upper elementary, I think it could be used with highschoolers. Torah Aura
is the publisher.
There are at least 3 in the series and are available on Amazon and maybe at a
Jewish seller.

Linda Silver reviewed the book A Little Piece of Ground in the Sep/Oct, 2003
AJL Newsletter.  You should read her review; she calls this novel "a powerful
propaganda piece" that presents Israelis as monsters, while Palestinian Arabs
evoke sympathy and empathy.   So I have to question why children are assigned
to read it in the first place.  They shouldn't be.       The closest I can
think of in answer to your search is Bottle in the Gaza Sea, by Valerie
Zenatti, but it is for slightly older readers and dates to the time when Israel
was still in Gaza.   I don't think you'll find a true counter-novel to A Little
Piece of Ground.    Years ago, I wrote to a favorite Sydney Talyor
Award-winning author and asked her to write a novel for middle grade students,
that "doesn't paint Israelis as aggressors and Arabs as their helpless
victims...a novel where the hero or heroine is a young Israeli, struggling to
live a normal life amid terrorism...that would counter the image of Israel that
is found in much of children's literature..." I'm afraid she declined, as she
had moved on to other writing.  Finally, there are some non-fiction books about
the conflict (for kids) that are fair and accurate, and I would be glad to
provide titles if you wish.   Andrea Rapp     From: Stacy Brown

[ha-Safran] Looking for a book/story (Aviva Rosenberg)

2015-02-11 Thread Karen Hering
Hi Aviva,
Filling Your Bucket books tells how filling other people's buckets fill
your own and may suit your purposes:

Have you filled a bucket today? – A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids. –
Carol McCloud. Nelson Pub. 2006. Ages 6-9.

this heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how
rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket
filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects
of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves.

How Full is Your Bucket for Kids? - Tom Rath.Gallup Press. 2009. ISBN-13:
9781595620279 Ages 3-8. Through the story of a little boy named Felix,
this charming book explains to children how being kind not only helps
others, it helps them, too. As he goes about his day, Felix interacts with
different people — his sister Anna, his grandfather, other family and
friends. Some people are happy, but others are grumpy or sad. Using the
metaphor of a bucket and dipper, Felix’ grandfather explains why the happy
people make Felix feel good, while the others leave him feeling bad — and
how Felix himself is affecting others, whether he means to or not.

There is another one I just came across called True Bucketfilling Stories:
Legacies of Love by Stacy Lundgren. but I am not familiar with it.
recommended ages 8-12.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a book or story that has a theme along the lines of "true
happiness comes from making other people happy." It's for a Rosh Chodesh
Adar program so it would be nice if it was Jewish, but doesn't have to be.
It can be a book, a folktale, a chapter from a larger work, but suitable
for elementary school as a read-aloud.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Dear Safranim,

Thank you to all who responded. I just wanted to let you know that I
confused the author with his father or son. The author of the book I
need is Abram Leon Sachar not Howard M. Sachar. Once this confusion was
cleared up the problem resolved itself.

Dear Safranim,

We are looking for a book "A History of the Jews" by Howard M. Sachar.
The copy we have is in bad condition and we would like to replace it.
Does anyone know if this book reissued after 1951 (which is the pub date
of the book we own)? Does anyone know where I can find it? I have
looked in all the usual places and have only been able to find his other
books but not his one.

Thank you in advance for your help.
