Hi Billy - I went to Snowshill about 12 years ago. They let me come when
they were closed and spent a couple of hours inspecting the instruments and
taking a few measurements etc. I've also got some photos. The curator and
staff were amazingly kind and made me coffee and sandwiches and all I
Hello Dana -
AMTA (France) and CubeRoots (UK), previously mentioned, are pretty standard
sources for recordings by the top French trad?players. AMTA is the official
source for recordings by Bouffard, Chabenat, Anne-Lise Foy, La Chavannee,
Vielleux de Bourbonnais, etc., and they are a basically
Itunes needs to be easier to search, since there is hg
music on it, including, to toot my own horn, my own
CD. Searching for Melissa Kacalanos should reveal it.
There are better hg players of course.
I see there are also a lot of CDs featuring hg on
cdbaby:
There are 3 instruments - guitarbodied Colson in not too bad nick and could
be made playable with a bit of work (I offered, but the National Trust had
other ideas!)
There's a Thouvenel guitarbodied in pretty bad shape, and also in pretty
dire condition is an 18C luteback by what looks like
If this is the one I'm thinking of, it's a pretty badly worn Thouvenel or
Colson. There may be others in the collection, but this is the one I know
about.

Hi,
This is mainly for the UK HGists does anybody have information or
knowledge of Hurdy Gurdy`s at this location.

Thanks everyone that replied.
It seems that museums world wide have a similar situation, conserve but
no laying on of hands! You must have been lucky or blessed Mike to have
had that opportunity. It is sad that instruments that are created to be
played and heard, are condemend to be gazed at
Yes, it's a shame that these instruments are, in effect, left to a shadow of
their former selves.
The usual reason, of course, is George Washington's axe syndrome (original
but it's had two new blades and three new handles).
Still. it's a shame that restoration cannot be done - they restored the
IN a city near me there is a music store and the owner is a collector.
Displayed on shelves and hanging on the wall are the most amazing
instruments including a lovely hurdy gurdy that looks to me to be in
playable condition. I asked if any of the instruments got played and was
told. No you don't
Thanks Melissa, I watch your videos on You Tube all
the time. Great sound.

Actually the Colson wasn't as bad as the others. From my notes I see that
it needed a few tangents and touchpieces for the keys and the keys in the
upper register were very floppy in the key slots. I was surprised to find
the wheel only very, very slightly warped and ran true and the shaft had
If you can still get into Montlucon they had hundreds of wonderful instruments
in the back which anyone who had a valid reason could examine or play. I feel
very privileged that when I was learning I was allowed to play one or two. As
pipe makers we had a session playing with the curator and I
Roz and I had a horribly frustrating experience trying to see the collection at
Montlucon two years ago. We made a special trip up to there from Riom, which
was a couple of hours of driving as I recall, found the museum, and saw nothing
about hurdy-gurdies in their literature, their posters in
Hi Mitch,Our schedule and instructors are already set for this year. I believe that Cali is the one who makes most of the dogs. I will pass along your request and possibly if she/they are amenable we could add dog making to our classes at some point. A while back they had a local one-day dog class

I asked if any of the instruments got played and was
told. No you don't do anything to collectable instruments because that
ruins
the value as collectables.
If their value as collectables is higher than their value as played
instruments that simply means
Hey Collin,
Not to be an a'hole here but I just wanted to make note that the Last Supper
isn't in the Sistine Chapel but they did restore the ceiling very nicely. I
completely understand what you are saying though. The HGs in the Vienna museum
are quiet dusty and in ill repair but they
