Re: [hlds] NS2 Alpha Release Tonight

2010-07-27 Thread f7 f0rkz
So I did a little searching for threads you actually contributed in. There
are none.

You are just simply as bad as the spam bullshit around here.

I would tell you to unsubscribe from the list but then again, that would
just give you jollys. So instead, I *encourage* to keep posting. I always
get a good chuckle when msleeper tells me the marvelous stories of you
bawwwing over your autistic son not wanting to play TF2 anymore.

On Wednesday April 14th we will be moving the HL2Master servers to a new set
of IP addresses. One of the major new features is the new Masters should
return dedicated servers ordered by their geographical distance from the
player requesting the server list, making for lower latency and better
 connections.

Dedicated server operators will generally have to restart their dedicated
servers after this move to ensure they will correctly pick up the new
addresses of the these Masters. The server browser in the Steam client and
in games such as Team Fortress 2 will automatically move to the new Masters.

Server operators that manually set their master servers (we recommend against
this practice however) please use hl2master.steampowered.com to refer to
them instead of the IPs directly. This name returns all Master addresses.

We will update once the move is complete.

While this may be hogwash, I think it might be due to Valve not being

srcds is not very fruitful for us since we don't have a special debug
 version of srcds.

Thus, I propose that Valve starts a few honeypot servers, that get
regular traffic. These honeypot servers would allow Valve to run the
special debug version of srcds so that when crashes and other exploits
occur, they have all the information they need to properly investigate
the bug. I realize this is easier said than done, but it would allow
for Valve to see that said bugs DO in fact exist.

 Just an Idea

Re: [hlds] Servers lost connection to steam but it hasnt

I think steamcloud is very unstable right now due to the high volume of
people playing. Just a hunch tho! I got items last night but couldn't
equip them. A quick restart of steam usually solved my problem, but
thats not really fixing the underlying problem at all. Chances are,
your servers are fine and steamcloud is the one down.

I wanted to give all the server admins a heads up that there are several big
update/releases coming out today for Tripwire's games. Here is what we have
 coming:

 Killing Floor

Defence Alliance 2 mod release - DA2 is the first total conversion mod to be
released for Killing Floor. This futuristic team based multiplayer mod has
been described as a combination of Halo/COD/TF2. Since the mod is going to
be released through Steam, the server install can be acquired through HLDS
like any other Steam dedicated server. The game name for HLDS is
 defencealliance2.

Required Killing Floor Update - a required Killing Floor update will be
released today. This update will add several of the top winning maps from
the Killing Floor Grindhouse custom map making competition as official
 custom maps for Killing Floor.

Killing Floor Guest Passes - We will be making guest passes available to all
owners of Killing Floor. With these guest passes owners of KF will be able
to allow their friends to play the game for free for a short time. We expect
a large influx of players this weekend because of this.

 Red Orchestra

Mare Nostrum Mod Content Update - The brilliant Mare Nostrum mod for Red
Orchestra is receiving a major content update today. The update adds 26
Brand New Steam Achievements, 7 New Maps including a paratrooper assault on
the island of Crete and wide open desert tank warfare holding the Gazala
Line, 10 New Vehicles including new British, German, and Italian Tanks, 7
New Weapons, and new playable soldiers including Polish, Italian, and German
units. This is an Official RO mod released over Steam, so servers can be
installed using HLDS with the game name marenostrum.

We ask that any server admins looking to help support the mod community for
Killing Floor or Red Orchestra please host some Defence Alliance 2 and Mare
Nostrum servers. Any additional servers would be greatly appreciated.

2009-12-09 Thread f0rkz
That wasn't really my point exactly. I know teens play this and
everything else. Hell, I played computer games when I was a teen.

It was more of a, if teens play this they know its an M rated game and I
believe thats why those disclaimers say Online interactions are not
rated by the ESRB or whatever. They know what they are getting their
selves into. If you want to ban for bad language, its your server. I
am just saying I don't think there is a specific list floating out there
with people using foul language.

Re: [hlds] L4D2 DS files question.

2009-11-16 Thread f0rkz
Thanks for the tidbit of incorrect knowledge. I can't think of any
times where Valve changed a naming schema that was completely off the
rocker.

On a more constructive note, I found that the game files use left4dead2.

# ls
bin hl2 hlds_steamgames.vdf left4dead2 logs platform srcds_linux
srcds_run steam_appid.txt

So its definitely possible its going to be left4dead2.

Why should they? They have a way to let server operators and players

Look at it this way, and I know a lot of people are different, I bought

Re: [hlds] New Weapon Drops

No matter what people do, they'll find a reason to whine. It's just a
part of being in the FPS world. A lot of violent pricks that expect
the most out of everything. When mom and dad doesn't give them what

Some of the next things we have planned are:

I definitely want the second one ASAP. I know someone who now has 7

Re: [hlds] Required Killing Floor Dedicated Server Update Released

A required update for Killing Floor has been released for both Windows

Additionally, as was suggested in my other message to the list, please
update your server's tick rate per the following instructions to fix the
issue for some player's disconnecting from a server after a short time
 of play:

 1) Stop your server process.
 2) In the IpDrv.TcpNetDriver section of KillingFloor.ini make the
 following change:

 Change this:
 NetServerMaxTickRate=20

 To this:
 NetServerMaxTickRate=30

 3) Restart your server

Additionally, here is the changelog for the update:

 Fixes:
 - Fixed a number of known exploits on each map.
 - Fixed Listen Server Hosts not showing as playing on a server in Steam
 Friends.
 - Fixed the game prompting for a password after the password was already
entered into Steam, when connecting from the Steam Server Browser.
 - Fixed exploit where players could shoot other players with shotguns
and launch them on top of things or out windows.
 - Fixed exploit where players could change their Perk multiple times in
order to get discounts on particular items. Players can only change
their Perk once per Wave now.
 - Fixed shotguns making Specimens fly back excessively online.
 - Fixed Server Browser becoming non-responsive when connected to a
 server.
 - Fixed exploit that players could use to purchase something even when
 too heavy.
 - Fixed Listen Server Hosts' Perks getting duplicated to other players
 connected to their server.
 - Fixed purchasing of a Handcannon appearing to discount other weapons.
 - Fixed a collision problem with crouching that was allowing exploits.

 Tweaks:
 - Improved the detection of Headshots on the Specimens.
 - Removed the scaling of players' names over their heads, which was
causing long names to be unreadable.
 - Changed Default Tick Rate for Internet Servers to 30 instead of 20 to
improve the online experience for players.
 - Hitting Escape now closes the Weapon Selection widget on the HUD.
 - Toned down the Blur and Camera Shake when a Specimen hits you. Blur
 now fades out more quickly.

 Regards.

We have released a required update for both the Windows and Linux
dedicated server files for Killing Floor. This update is required,
 and
users will not be able to see your servers in their browser if they
 are
not updated. This update fixes many issues focusing primarily on the
 matchmaking. Here is the changelog:

 Server Browser
 - Fixed the in game server browser not showing all servers
 - Fixed the Perks enabled server icon not showing up in the server
 browser
 - Fixed some server browser filters not working right. Also added the
ability to filter servers by Perks enabled and filter by difficulty.
 - Added the ability to sort the server list by difficulty
 - Servers that cannot be reached because they are behind a firewall
 will
show up with a ping of in the server browser. This is the cause
 of
 most connection failed messages.
 - Fixed the Stats Name/Password popup box that was popping up but
 shouldn't have been
 - Fixed a Warning box that was appearing but shouldn't have been
 - Added a message when attempting to host a listen server notifying
 the
user what ports they must have open on their firewall to host the
 game.

 Other Fixes
Shortened the default length of time the server waits before the map
 changes.
Set proper defaults for Difficulty/Game Length - right now it
 defaults
to Beginner/Short, changing this to Normal/Medium.
Fixed dead enemies disappearing instantly on a Listen Server for
 other
 players.
Fixed game not showing up in Gamespy.
White list - creating a white list of server mutators that can be
 used
 while still allowing perks.

Also, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone hosting KF servers on
launch day - we really appreciate the server community for quickly
getting servers up after the launch.

 Cheers,

I just thought I would throw up this quote from a Gamasutra
 article
 on
 The
Cabal: Valve’s Design Process For Creating Half-Life found at
 http://www.gamasutra.com/features/19991210/birdwell_01.htm

 [
 No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Until the Cabal process got underway, technology was added to
 Half-Life
freely. It was assumed that if we build it, they will come,
 meaning
 that
any new technology would just naturally find a creative use by
 the
 content
creation folks. A prime example of this fallacy was our beam
 effect,
basically a technique for doing highly tunable squiggly glowing
 lines
between two points; stuff like lightning, lasers, and mysterious
 glowing
beams of energy. It was added to the engine, the parameters were
 exposed,
and an e-mail was sent out explaining it. The result was …
 nothing.
 After
two months only one level designer had put it in a map.
 Engineering
 was
 baffled.

During the Cabal process, we realized that although the level
 designers
knew of the feature, they really had no clear idea of what it was
 for.
 The
parameters were all very cryptic, and the wrong combinations
 would
 cause the
beams to have very ugly-looking effects. There were no decent
 textures
 to
apply to them, and setting them up was a bit of a mystery. It
 became
 very
clear the technology itself was only a small part of the work and
integration, training, and follow-through were absolutely
 necessary
 to
 make
the technology useful to the game. Writing the code was typically
 less
 than
 half the problem.
 ]

It still seems that this problem is still around Source modding,
mapping,... The technology is there to do almost anything we
 want,
 but
 we
still have to search and trial and error for hours to achieve it.
 I'm
speaking as someone who has left and returned to many of my maps
 over
 and
over again because I don't have the time for another full time
 job
 -
 and
that is what it currently takes to make sense of it all. I'm only
 posting
this because the L4D SDK is on the horizon and I'd love to get my
 ideas
 into
maps without having to reverse engineer maps (I talk here about
 the
 complex
example maps that are sometimes included in the SDKs and not
 decompiled
maps), or trial and error (guess) what entities work together, or
 have
 to
wait/search for community tutorials. Please improve this
 drastically
 with
the next SDK release. I know I and the rest of the community
 would
 thank you
 Valve.

Indeed! Its sad that people resort to this. At any rate, I saw the
person just hit my blog, I guess read a little about me and decided to
post abusive things on here. It was enough to confirm the ip was an
actual person and firewall it away, but its still annoying. I

A few class C's should work, if that. If you honestly think that

likelihood of multiple people playing on such a limited IP range
 is so
small, you'd have a better chance of playing the lottery. Plus it
 only
really needs to be in effect for a few hours or days. After they
 can't
get the server to respond, most people stop trying.

Oh, and a class B (/16) is only 65,536 IP's. Considering there are
 4.2
billion IP's out there (including RFC 1918 addresses), it's a drop
 in
 the bucket.

Re: [hlds] symlink multiple servers

2009-03-05 Thread f0rkz
You could share the source shared content as a single symlink point.
Getting any deeper into sharing content may get tricky, but its
possible.

For instance, you set up something like /home/serverfiles/hl2
You could then symlink that in your server's directory..
/home/myuser/mygameserver/
ln -s /home/serverfiles/hl2 /home/myuser/mygameserver/hl2

Further than that may get messy...

Anyone here setup the additional servers via symlink?

If so how did you go about doing it so that /addons and /cfg folders
 arn't shared?

I'm curious to hear everyones opinion on this.

I am not trying to win anything. Farming is a polarized topic, where
people feel agree it is wrong, or feel it is fine and isn't
 against the
rules. Like all server communities, it is up to individual server
 admins
to decide what they want to be allowed and not to be allowed. Am I
saying that every single admin or player out there needs to feel the
same way I do? Of course not.

I'm not going to say that people need to feel the same way I feel
 about
farming, either. It's not off base and it's not the way that you
 feel,
so awesome. Don't run it, and enjoy farmers on your servers.

Definitely not today. I think you read that blog post wrong:

The question was when the next update was, they answered that it was
an update to fix a few bugs and exploits.

My speculation is they will move over a lot of the l4d multiplayer

etc...) to tf2 in the next major update and this is why it is taking
so long.
