Very true, thanks Rory. And I neglected to mention the automatic waiver
where transfers are a problem...

Still happy to see contribution to OSM systematically acknowledged!

Re: [HOT] Idle thought time mapping without the Internet

2020-04-04 Thread Pete Masters via HOT
There is also the kobo for Missing Maps tool:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C2ycpdDpOo

It's less visual, unless used in combination with OSMAnd or maps.me, but
the workflow for getting data into OSM is working... It's not completely
'without internet' but once the app and form are downloaded, the data
collection can be done completely offline. Does need a small amount of data
to submit the points of interest to the server once they are collected, of
course...

[HOT] OSM Foundation member fees changing

2020-04-03 Thread Pete Masters via HOT
Hi all, don't know if you have seen but the OpenStreetMap Foundation have
been discussing membership fees. Some interesting new proposals have been
voted on recently...

https://wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Working_Group_Minutes/MWG_2020-01-19#implementation_of_new_Fee_waiver_for_mappers.2Fcontributors

This is important because the OSMF members vote for the board and the board
are influential in defining / guiding the future of OpenStreetMap, which we
all know and love.

This is different to HOT membership as to be a member for OSMF you had to
pay £15 (sterling) or apply for an exemption on an individual basis
(whereas for HOT, you need to be nominated). This fee was regardless of
whether £15 was a lot of money or not much money wherever you were from.
The new rules look to reward contribution to the OSM project, not just
whether you can spare the cash.

The OSMF membership working group are looking for feedback on the
proposals. You can either email them directly at m...@openstreetmap.org or
post to the OSMF talk list [1]
.

I think the proposals are good and worth engaging with...

Hope you are all safe and well in these crazy times!

Hi Tommy, thanks for the email. Excited about the project, especially as I
have done some OSM mapping in Sierra Leone with MSF (mapping waterpoints in
Freetown)

For future reference, if people are writing aboiut their microgrants
project, reference the microgrants programme in the email and use the
official donately link - https://pages.donately.com/hotosm/campaigns/ -
just in case people think it might be a phishing email, which obviously
this is not!

Good luck with the campaign!!

[HOT] Maps and outbreaks and the R4EPIs project

2018-12-30 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, thought you might be interested in this blog post from MSF
epidemiologist, Larissa.

Partly, because of her description of how maps are useful in an outbreak:

"Maps are really useful when you’re trying plan a response as they can help
the team see where they might need to focus their efforts: they can help us
get to the source of an outbreak, faster, or help us see places that aren’t
affected yet but are at risk, so we can get preventative measures in place,
like organising a vaccination campaign."

And, partly, because R4EPIs is a cooll open source software project to
build a library of standard, context-specific analysis tools (in R) for
outbreaks and emergencies, meaning epis can analyse their data and get the
necessary information to those that need it faster and in a more coherent
way...

Blog is at
https://blogs.msf.org/bloggers/larissa/innovation-introducing-r4epis

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Nominations open for new HOT voting members!

2018-02-26 Thread Pete Masters
Hello HOT community, how are you all?

It’s the time of year again where we develop and grow the HOT voting
membership. The way this works is that each of the current members can
nominate one new person to join. We are looking for people who are
passionate about HOT’s work and who have made significant contributions.

This year, to try and increase the diversity of the HOT membership, we are
also inviting people to express interest in being a member even if they do
not have contacts within the current membership (i.e. don’t know any
members who can nominate them). We will then offer members the opportunity
to support these people expressing interest by formally nominating them.

So, if you would like to express interest in becoming a HOT voting member,
and you don’t know any current members, you can do so here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScklpA0cLTe1vh138zAfyKudWAF6_ninkx71HQQZ6xM_px8bQ/viewform>
[1].

If you are interested and you do know current members, ask one of them to
nominate you (go here to see who the current members are
<https://www.hotosm.org/voting-members> [2]).

The nominations are open until 10th March.

If you have any other questions about the process or want to talk about any
related matters, please feel free to get in touch.

Cheers,

Pete & HOT election committee

Hi Rafael, I see your point about the CoC and ownership of the list. But
that was only the third paragraph of Dale's email.

The fact remains that a person was told they are one of a hated group of
people and left the list. It's a loss. Are we comfortable with that? Is it
just the way it is and everyone has to live with it?

Personally, I am not comfortable with it and welcome further discussion.

Re: [HOT] Buildings and HOT's reputation in OSM

2017-12-12 Thread Pete Masters
Apologies for going back to an earlier point, but i think yes there are
examples. The OSM Bangladesh crew, while not without original, local
catalysts, had a resurgence after a HOT project with MSF. While the project
was very successful (and has had impact in terms of medical care in
deprived areas of Dhaka), the really remarkable thing has been what has
happened since, on a local and international scale. The passion of those
individuals, some of whom had their first OSM experiences through HOT has
led to collaborations with local communities, NGOs, businesses (who now
employ OSM mappers), and conversations with local and national government
departments. If anyone can talk to this question it is them.

Plus, on the subject of WAMM, OSM data is now being used in a Ministry of
Health hospital in Sierra Leone to improve surveillance and public health
systems in the area. This is a local, institutional use case I have no
idea if any of those mappers have gone on to enrich the map in other ways
from there, but this is a big deal for local health infrastructure.

Do we ask enough and learn enough from those involved in these examples?
Probably not. But, good collaborations are happening. And, I think the
microgrants programme is great. There will be some successes and,
inevitably, some failures in the long term and we should not be complacent
that they are a golden bullet, but I think overall this is a good HOT
initiative

I really appreciate this conversation and, personally, think it is a
discussion that needs to be had... I'm glad it's resurfaced.

Pete

Ps. Sorry if the email is a bit rambling (it's late and I'm tired)!

So is there a way to get this message across? Are there examples where
after training they have enriched the map without being directed what to
map?

We've come a long way with the projects and maperthons simplifying and
standardizing improving the training material, and giving feedback so the
standard of mapping for new mappers is considerably higher than it has been
in the past.

The other part is are the locals trusting the map enough to use it for
local government type work?

[HOT] help with coordination of ebola mapping

2017-05-16 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Wondering if anyone might have time over the next few days to support
coordination of the ebola mapping projects? I have been working with Claire
so far, but will be out of action from tomorrow until Sunday due to work
commitments.

If you think you might be able to help, give me a shout... Happy to pick up
again on Sunday.

Cheers,

Pete

Next project - #2991 - is published as #2990 is nearly mapped (GREAT
WORK!). Same instructions as #2990...

Updated on both wiki pages...

2017-05-15 Thread Pete Masters
Update on ebola mapping...

Great work done over the weekend, but plenty more to do!

http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2990 85% mapped and 24% validated (this
project is roads and residential areas only - building projects may follow)

http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2988 91% mapped and 62% validated (this
project includes building mapping)

Project priority info is here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/14zFpm72M0XMuwHeh-3XQcevU-5xtixJMkeHLFf-fUK0/edit?usp=sharing

There are two more in draft. These are based on the needs over the weekend,
but we'll see what the needs are in the coming hours and days...

Thanks for contributing!

Re: [HOT] Mapswipe - whats happening with the data?

2017-03-26 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, late to the party, but here are my two cents...

MapSwipe, anecdotally for now, does save mappers' time. In an area where
little OSM data exists, it can target mappers' efforts where people (or
roads or rivers) exist. In the kind of rural landscapes we deal with a lot
in MSF areas of interest, this cuts down the amount of time spent
'scanning' for stuff to map significantly. And, MapSwipe users can get
through a large area super fast.

In the Sierra Leone projects we used it slightly differently. We knew that
Kenema district had been partly mapped through several other initiatives
(Ebola mapping and the American Red Cross West Africa project for
example). We wanted comprehensive data in OSM, so we tasked the area in
MapSwipe and cross referenced the results with existing OSM data. Where
MapSwipers said 'yes, there is a building' but none existed in OSM the area
would be tasked for mapping. Where MapSwipers said 'yes, there is a
building' and building data existed in OSM, we discounted the area from the
tasking. Meaning that mappers were applying affords only where there were
gaps in the data.

I hope that is of interest. Couple of related points...

Each area is classified by three different users in MapSwipe, not four.

Paul Stewart wrote up the process for using Mapswipe to deduplicate mapping
efforts through the tasking manager
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/pjstewart1984/diary/40710

Disastermappers write here about how to access MapSwipe data and how they
process it

[HOT] Leaving my Missing Maps job

2017-02-22 Thread Pete Masters
Hello all, I hope you are well...

Apologies for using the mailing list to send a personal message, but I feel
like (and hope) it isn't inappropriate.

My time as coordinator for Missing Maps at MSF is coming to an end - last
week I accepted a new position within MSF working on innovation process and
how we better approach field problems and opportunities. I wanted to let
this community know personally for a few different reasons

Firstly, to say thanks for the education. It has been an absolute pleasure
to work with such a varied bunch of dedicated, passionate and clever
people. I have been an MSF fanboy for a long time and I am now a HOT and
OSM fanboy too. My job over the past two and a half years has been to try,
as much as possible, to find the overlaps and opportunities between these
two (very different) organisations and communities. As I hope you have
noticed, I have tried to connect the dots between what the HOT and Missing
Maps community can do for MSF and the impact that that volunteering has on
real people (both our staff in the field and our patients). What you
probably don't know is that I also evangelise HOT / OSM within MSF - not
just for the mapping, but for the principles of openness and teamwork and
sharing that make mapping and collaborating on such a scale possible.

Secondly, because you should know that what you have accomplished during
this past two and a half years through HOT activations and Missing Maps
projects is pretty unprecedented in MSF. Operational people and medical
people within MSF now *expect* to be able to rely on Missing Maps and HOT
to deliver data for decision making in the places we work. The quality of
your work and the dedication you show (often at very short notice) has
taken the project from a suspiciously viewed, disruptive, unorthodox and
often misunderstood project in MSF into a tool that the people delivering
aid on the ground value and want. That's huge.

Thirdly, I appreciate that there are massive challenges ahead. Discussion
started by Fred on validation is high up that list. As is the scale of the
supply and demand from organisations like MSF. As is how we leverage the
data these organisations are collecting on the ground as part of their
day-to-day to enrich the OSM database (but including how we do that in a
resposible and sustainable way). I have no doubt that together we (I fully
intend to stay a part of the HOT community despite the change in day job)
can address these challenges and whatever comes after. I would like to
offer this opportunity to feed back to me any thoughts you may have on the
future of Missing Maps and MSF or any other feedback you may have.

Lastly, there is going to be a very cool job available at MSF UK. Not an
easy job by any means (the phrase jack of all trades doesn't do it
justice), but a massively fulfilling one. Knowing the talent available
amongst you, I'd strongly encourage you to take a look when the job is

That's it really. It's not goodbye by any means and I look forward to
continuing these discussions beyond the end of my MSF Missing Maps job...
Apologies for the lack of brevity!

Hi Blake, we currently have a field data entry workflow on the dev TM we
are testing. Not mission critical, but it doesn't exist anywhere else at
the moment...

[HOT] tasking manager clean up

2017-02-09 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Just having a bit of a clean up of Missing Maps projects in the tasking
manager and I am coming across loads of projects that are either all
finished (100% validated) or haven't been touched in a long time.

I hope project managers don't mind but I am going to archive the completed
ones I see (they are still accessible to the project managers of course).

If project managers can do a bit of gardening occasionally, it would be
helpful ;)

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Nigeria task on the TM

2017-02-06 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, I had a message from a contributor about the imagery used in the
Maiduguri, Nigeria task [1 <http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2488>]. Just to
say, I know the bing imagery is a bit clearer, but it is from 2014 and MSF
team needed a more recent representation of the situation on the ground, so
purchased one from March 2016.

So, if you are contributing to this project, please stick with the custom
imagery as much as possible...

Thanks,

Pete

The MSF team in Beirut would like to run their first mapathons in February.
They have asked me if I know of anyone locally that might be interested in
collaborating with them in this event...

I don't really, but maybe you guys and girls do?

Any leads or contacts appreciated...

[HOT] openstreetmap.org by language

2017-01-24 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, I am encouraging people who send out internal bulletins about MSF's
field work to try and link place names to locations on openstreetmap.org to
give readers more context and help people to understand what data is
available in the places we work...

However, where available, place names are rendered in local languages
(Yemen was today's example). I have absolutely no problem with this, but
wondered if there was a way of viewing the map with place names in a
different language if desired?

For example,
http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4509927854#map=11/23.8089/90.3893 but
with English (or French or Arabic) labels...

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Pete

Re: [HOT] HOT #2398 concern about old imagery date

2016-12-31 Thread Pete Masters
Hi Martin,

Thanks for your question... Jan (the project manager) forwarded me your
email, but I have been away...

You're right that this is not ideal. Bing is the only source we have access
to at such scale (and the only source we can use in MapSwipe as it stands),
so unfortunately it is a case of something is better than nothing. The team
in the field is in need of the data for February and are aware of the aged
imagery.

Happy to continue the discussion but it won't be for a couple of days as I
am heading out the door again now and will be offline until the 3rd. Really
appreciate the feedback...

Hi Eduardo, it is tough mapping!

Blake Girardot made this video for a project that focused on dense urban
neighbourhoods of Damascus:

[HOT] New, urgent project for MSF

2016-11-29 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Just a heads up in case any of you have time to contribute to a project
requested by MSF in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2359

It is pretty dense building mapping, so canh be slow going, but your help
would be massively appreciated. They are requesting the data for two week's
time...

>From the MSF team:

The diseases addressed are Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika and the project in
need of geographic data has several components :

   - water and sanitation activities : spraying, larviciding, fumigation in
order to kill mosquitoes and larva.
   - identification of larva sites in streets and at community level
   - entomologic surveillance
   - health promotion to sensitize and inform about activities
   - cholera surveillance

The maps produced would support decision making processes. Knowledge about
building count would help estimating population.

Additionally the maps will serve to communicate and plan activities

Thanks a lot for your help!!

[HOT] Explaining unusual priority setting for MSF Masisi tasks on the tasking manager

2016-11-16 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, hope you are all well...

Just want to explain why task 2328 [1 <http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2328>]
is set to high priority on the tasking manager.

Usually, I don't set any Missing Maps projects higher than medium unless
there is an urgent operational need from MSF. This one is slightly
different. We are trialing DG's +Vivid service [2
<http://microsites.digitalglobe.com/interactive/basemap_vivid/>] (and
thanks to DG for the free trial) as a solution to where there is no
coverage in bing on a large scale. This rural area of Masisi was pretty
much unmapped until now.

Originally, the trial was for a few months, but with the yellow fever
outbreak in Kinshasa and Hurricane Matthew, the project (rightly) got
bumped down the list. We now need to wrap this up as our last extension for
access to +Vivid is coming to an end. So, I have graduated it (and one more
like it) to high priority - just thought I should explain as I realise this
bumps other people's projects down the home page.. Thanks for bearing with
us!

And, a huge thanks to all of you that have contributed already. Please feel
free to jump in if you have time!

Cheers,

Pete

Re: [HOT] OSM humanitarian mapping and its learning curve

2016-10-13 Thread Pete Masters
Apologies for a second email in succession but Jo reminded me of my
original thoughts when I read Sev's first email.

Firstly, I agree that a hugely committed mapper or 3 / 4 regular mappers
are preferable to 10 one-time mappers, but I think that's probably slightly
naive. From what I remember of Martin Dittus' research (and apologies if I
have misremembered, Martin) you need to engage with many more than ten new
mappers to find even one regular one (and this is in a regular mapathon
setting where there is training and community). Also, some of the most
committed humanitarian mappers were, once upon a time, newbies. How do you
find those hard core HOT mappers of the future without looking?

Secondly, I think new mappers are a great thing. We need them. MSF
certainly needs them. The appetite for the kind of speed, quality and
coverage you guys provide so well is growing fast. In terms of tasking, I
have a backlog of more than ten projects that I haven't even put into the
tasking manager yet. None of them are mapping for crises that make the
news. And I know that we can't, as a community, handle these extra requests
without growing significantly. That means inviting new people.

Lastly, I have seen rooms full of new mappers provide operational data for
field teams on urgent request. Mapping for the MSF measles vaccination on
the island of Idjwi in DRC is a good case in point. Experienced HOT mappers
were instrumental in checking the quality of the data, but new mappers in
Glasgow and all over Belgium turned a likely failure into an astonishing
success by doing the initial mapping at speed and with enthusiasm. This
should be celebrated.

If we curb the number of new mappers coming into this space, we will have
to say no to a lot more requests from serious NGOs doing serious work.
Better, I would think, to work out how their time is most effectively
spent however long they stay for... and to work out how to encourage them
to stay for a while. My feeling is that criticising them en masse for
spoiling data on the mailing list might be counter productive to this.

[HOT] Tasking manager project data

2016-10-03 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, we are doing a review exercise of MSF-related Missing Maps mapping.
Is there a way to export the data for Tasking Manager projects. For
example, all the projects created by a specific username? Or all projects
with #MissingMaps specified in the changeset comment?

Otherwise, I'm gonna have to it manually, which will be painful.

[HOT] Myanmar task on MapSwipe

2016-09-05 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, how are you?

Thought some of you might be interested in this: myanmar-results-100.zip
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwsMM5hElkXEZVdEMWtiS20zVUk/view?usp=sharing_eid=57cda93f>

It's the full results from MapSwipe contributors for the MSF-requested
Myanmar project. There's a qgis project file, shapes for admin boundaries
and a results geojson.

This will be the first MapSwipe task that informs a tasking manager
project, so we need to work out how best to do that over the coming days!

The project in MapSwipe was completed in around 60 hours by just more than
1000 people, which we are super pleased with. Looking forward to see how it
affects the TM process!

Would love to hear your questions and conmments / suggestions...

Cheers,

Pete

Hi all,

I received this message via sms this morning from a logistician working on
the yellow fever intervention in Kinshasa...

"I am Etienne, French logistics team leader. We are visiting for the first
time today the zone of Kingasani. We already know it is the most dense zone
we will work in. We are facing access and transportation issues because of
the small roads. Maps are a critical key for success in this urban yellow

Just wanted to share it with you.

If you have time, there are more projects on the tasking manager that need
urgent work... http://tasks.hotosm.org/

2016-08-01 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, amazing work on the first Kinshasa task for the yellow fever
outbreak in DRC. 100% mapped and ~80% validated in a matter of days.
Initial response from the MSF GIS officer in Kinshasa was:

*1/ THANK YOU ! I know a couple of logisticians who would kiss you all
right now*

The second task is up on the TM [1 <http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2043>].
I have added the line *The priority area is the north of this zone, so
please choose squares in the north, first! *in the instructions. If someone
could do the French again, that would be marvelous...

Thanks again for all your contributions...

@Laura, happy to ask for imagery specific noted if validators think it
would help. Personally, I have been using both to cross reference and from
what I have seen, mappers are doing the same...

Cheers,

pete

[HOT] MapSwipe in other languages (translators welcome!)

2016-08-01 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

We are now at a point where we are able to add in other languages to
MapSwipe. We realise that the automatic translations provided in the app
don't necessarily make all that much sense! ;)

If you fancy translating for us, please fill in the language as column head
in the spreadsheet below [1] and add your translation in the three rows
indicated.

Give me a shout if you have any questions!

Thanks,

Pete

Re: [HOT] Launching MapSwipe

2016-07-31 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Quite a few of you reported the repeating tile issue in mapSwipe. Just
wanted to let you know that we think we've resolved this now.

The project completion was also skewed by this, so you'll notice they have
lower completion percentages now, but these should be accurate. Means we've
mapped less area in real terms than we thought, but it also means projects
should go much quicker now because of the more efficient distribution of
effort.

A few more fixes are included in the latest update (available now on
android and soon on iOS). Well publish a blog post tomorrow with more
details...

Thanks for your patience!

Pete

Re: [HOT] Mapping request from MSF

2016-07-28 Thread Pete Masters
Just to update, we have changed the imagery instructions slightly again as
often MapBox is as good if not better than Bing.

Instructions now read:

Please switch between both *Bing and MapBox* imagery for this project. They
are both available and checking both will improve accuracy. *You can switch
between the two last used images in iD easily by using CTRL-B.*

If someone can update the French...! Thanks.

[HOT] Mapping request from MSF

2016-07-27 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Quick request... MSF urgently needs data for teams in Kinshasa battling the
yellow fever outbreak.

http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2041 (just buildings on this one)

This is the first of (probably) a few areas needing mapping. More details
in the tasking manager project description. Vaccination set to start early
- mid August. Team has asked if we can have the mapping done by the 8th
August.

If you have any questions, please let me know. If you have some time, your
contribution would be much appreciated, either mapping or validating

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Compliments on a bit of TM development

2016-07-25 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Just wanted to commend those involved with a recent development on the
tasking manager.

We have been mapping at the request of an MSF epidemiologist in Chad.
Having finished the first project [1 <http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2015>],
she wrote to me to say how pleased she was [2
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/pedrito1414/diary/39091>]. She then came
back and asked for a few more areas to be mapped.

I used the new function in the tasking manager and sent her thanks and
feedback to the mappers who helped with the first project and also pointed
out that she had requested further mapping [3
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2036>].

The second project was completed really quickly and it was great to see
that 8 of the original 29 mappers from the first project came back to help
with the second project.

It's a really nice feature for project managers to be able to do this. So,
thanks a million!

One question for you guys involved. Do these messages also reach validators
for the project if they WERE NOT also mappers? I hope so, because the
validators did a great job on these projects

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] MapSwipe Launched!

2016-07-15 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, as promised, MapSwipe is now available on App Store, Play Store and
via http://mapswipe.org/

There's a blog post on it, here:
http://www.missingmaps.org/blog/2016/07/14/mapswipe/

Would love it if you'd give it a go and, assuming you like it (!), give us
a hand sharing it

Lot's of stuff to come, but the app is ready for mapping. At the moment,
these are just Missing Maps projects, but once we are on our feet, we hope
to open it right up. Data exporter also on its way, soon!

If you have any problems, encounter bugs or have comments, please feel free
to let us know at http://bit.ly/MapSwipeFBack We expect some bugs, of
course, and your help pointing them out to us would be much appreciated...

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Launching MapSwipe

2016-07-13 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, how are you?

You might have heard mention of a new tool we are planning to launch on
Friday called MapSwipe. It's a Missing Maps initiative, developed by MSF,
designed to support OSM / HOT mapping. The idea is that people swipe
through imagery on their phones and identify areas with specified features
(roads, buildings, etc). The resulting data can then be plugged into the
tasking manager, meaning mappers have less empty bush, jungle, desert to
scan through, meaning we can all get on with mapping a bit quicker.

This is a first instance funded by MSF, so we will start off with Missing
Maps tasks in there, but we hope to soon open it up to others. The code is
also all on github.

The app will be available on Friday, but there is a landing page already
ready [1 <http://mapswipe.org/>] and I also did an interview on the BBC
world service show, Click, last night [2
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p040g4qr>] in case you want to have a
listen.

When it comes to the launch on Friday, we would love your support in
getting the word out. The possibilities of using this kind of tool at scale
are fascinating and your help amplifying the message would be superb.

If you have any questions, just give me a shout!

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Help wanted with xml files.... (Congo mapping)

2016-06-24 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, hope you are well...

A Congolese water and sanitation guy from MSF in Lubumbashi has been doing
a load of mapping using ODK Collect. He was one of the trainees when Bruno
and I did data collection training in Lubumbashi in January and I have only
just found out he continued with collecting data! This is great news, but
we have a problem.

While he was collecting the data, the formhub server we were using got
hacked. Consequently, I instructed him how to manually back up the
completed ODK surveys on to a laptop. So, I now have them - 64 xml files in
64 separate folders.

Can anyone help me with merging these xmls and converting them to a
spreadsheet or similar? To do it manually is going to take so long

Be great to get them into a format that we could then do the OSM mapping
from The surveys were of roads, waterpoints and points of interest.

Cheers,

Pete

[HOT] Big mapathon this week

2016-06-22 Thread Pete Masters
Hi guys, how are you?

Accenture employees have organised a follow-the-sun mapping party this week
to help with Missing Maps tasks. There will be a lot of them altogether
working on tasks in Chad and Nigeria from Thursday to Friday in various
Accenture offices around the world.

If any of you have time to drop by the TM and do some validation, it would
be much appreciated. The Chad projects will be found at
http://tasks.hotosm.org/?sort_by=priority=asc=hadjer
Nigeria projects will be found at
http://tasks.hotosm.org/?sort_by=priority=asc=niger+state
(Both have projects in draft that will be published closer to the time)

Accenture have been a great partner for MSF in the Missing Maps project.
Employees have been organising in-house mapping parties for many months and
spreading the word on HOT and OSM throughout the organisation. This has
been very much a partnership built from the ground up as employees got
involved through our public mapathons in London and took the idea into
their work.

Any questions, feel free to give me a shout...

[HOT] Sierra Leone contacts

2016-06-14 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all,

Rupert (rupertmaesglas), Nick (Tallguy) and I have just returned from
Sierra Leone where we've been working with Red Cross and MSF on training
for data collection and mapping. Some news from these specific projects to
come, but I just wanted to mention to the HOT community a couple of people
we met while there.

The first is Morris [5 <https://twitter.com/MORRISMARAH>], who has founded
Sierra Leone's first innovation tech hub [1
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4230771354> & 2 <http://sensi-sl.org/>].
Morris is working to provide a space, community, tech and training for
locals to upskill in a whole load of different things, from ICT to
entrepreneurship. He is really pushing open data and open source and is
looking for collaborators. We ran a small mapping party on Monday evening
and presented OSM / HOT and Missing Maps at a data boot camp run by code 4
Africa yesterday and the appetite for OSM is big. If any of you are
involved in projects in Sierra Leone (and especially if you are going
there), do get in touch with the hub - there is not a huge amount of OSM
expertise in the current community and they would love to get more people
involved.

The second is Slum Dwellers International (SDI) Sierra Leone [3
<http://sdinet.org/category/countries/sierra-leone/>] and their data
officer, Richard [6 <https://twitter.com/riboc92>]. Richard works with SDI
training slum communities to map themselves in order to better advocate for
services and facilities from government ministries. This feels to me like a
perfect fit for HOT. The data is not sensitive and a lot of it is very
appropriate for OSM. The communities there use gps devices and smart phones
to map their areas, the data is aggregated and then the people living in
the area then validate the data together. These communities are amongst the
most vulnerable when it comes to disease outbreaks and the data they hold
could be of enormous benefit to NGOs and MoH when responding.

Richard is another person to get in touch with if any of you are going to
Freetown, but I also mention him because I wondered whether anyone else had
any experience of working with SDI? They have launched a project recently
called Know Your City [4
<http://www.knowyourcity.info/map.php#/app/ui/world>], which is a platform
aimed to assist with advocacy and knowledge sharing. I am surprised I
hadn't heard of it

Apologies if that is a bit of a ramble, but just wanted to share these
particular contacts with the HOT community

Cheers,

[HOT] Sierra Leone contacts

2016-05-23 Thread Pete Masters
Hi all, MSF is going to be doing training with data collectors in Sierra
Leone as part of the Red Cross border mapping project.

I wondered if anyone had any local HOT / OSM contacts in Freetown or the
regions?

Cheers,

Pete
