Tried that. It restarts from scratch, although the input .pto and .tif are
older than the exposure_layer/stack_ldr files.
Seems there are no dependencies formulated or they don't work. To be honest,
the make file is beyond my basic understanding. However
However: every click takes 2 minutes of 100% CPU. Yawn!
(no disk access, no swapping)
Close the preview window and this should be faster.

enblend: out of memory
Ouch!
I kept all 111 GByte of intermediate exposure_layer and stack_ldr TIFs.
Is there a chance to restart the script from where it died?

Key to that was NOT using the assistant, selecting a reasonable anchor (the
one selected by default was a mostly out-of-focus patch of grass from the
very edge of the panorama). Using Positions incrementally from anchor.

I'm trying to create a 480 x 21MP Panorama (4 rows). I switched off RANSAC
outlier detection and had to use the
--maxmatches %p %o %s
command line variant for autopano-sift-c because the command line can't
take 480 shots.
It detected control points fine (55'035) and now hangs
