Hi 

I succeeded to align the 480 shot panorama!

Key to that was NOT using the assistant, selecting a reasonable anchor (the
one selected by default was a mostly out-of-focus patch of grass from the
very edge of the panorama). Using "Positions incrementally from anchor". 

However: every click takes 2 minutes of 100% CPU. Yawn! 
(no disk access, no swapping)

Next step is rendering. 
(I'm very curious whether the excellent quality of the test sector is
repeated for the whole panorama!)
