If all you want is the DATE you could use the CREATION date from the catalog.
CSI could easily list all the generations and all the creation dates.

DSNAME using system symbols. If you decide to go that way, you
should consider how you will retrieve the data. It won't be nearly as
easy as retrieving Generation Data Sets.
