Your story reminds of all the times the pinheads end up invoking the mythical
"Super Hacker" that can bypass "Any" security.
My feeling is that if we are up against an all powerful Diety, we can just
call it a day and go home. Why waste our lives if absolutely Nothing will

For our OSA-ICC consoles, we use Visara LX-500 units. These have a TN3270
emulator. OSA-ICC is on a private network with no connection to the
outside world.

We had Windows PCs as consoles for our ICC. All of them were not on the
real network, so no regular Windows updates. Once a month, we took a
long Ethernet cable and connected each console PC to the real network
and updated Windows and then reconnected to the ICC. Not too hard to do.

Exactly how my previous site was setup, one private vlan for ICC
consoles one vlan IIRC for the HMC network
worked well

At my previous site, they had windows PCs for consoles on a dedicated network
connected to the ICC ports. Since the PCs don't have access to the outside
world, they don't get updates automatically so they don't reboot unexpectedly.
The PC folks just have to connect them to the network for
There is no real reason that your ICC consoles need to be on the rest of your
network. However, there are people who set it up with a VPN so they can
operate consoles from home.

I use one of these PI units at home for my bedroom when I have to be
laid up after surgery. It is small, and efficient. It can get a bit
warm, I don't have a fan for mine, but you can get them.
They even have a mounting so that it attaches to the back of a monitor
via the VESA mounting holes.
Hi,
I have a customer that replaces 355 desktops (Dell,HP,IBM) and 8 old terminals
by Raspberry PI 3 running Raspian distro. Perfect! No issues.

You are preaching to the Choir! The box we are looking to replace is a Visara

There are advantages to Windows and Linux based PC's because they will be able
to use the extra capabilities of the emulators they use to emulate the 3270's.
