Every time I see this thread, I picture someone with a bucket and a sponge,
wiping down a tape silo.

There was an excellent presentation in IBM TechDocs called "Tape 101" that did
exactly this.
Of course, it is lost now... unless someone has a local copy.

Thank you, I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel now,
I have completed a round of 'EQ' commands for the targeted tapes. These
tapes are no longer showing up on 'Virtual Volume Search' requests.
IF there is any cluster level space still occupying the cluster members, I hope

I've watched this thread for quite sometime. I come from a small systems
background, and did not have any exposure to tape libraries and VTS's. Now
that I'm working for a larger company, I feel lost in regards to the whole VTS
thing. I wish there was a z/OS VTS class that would start from
Hello,
Pls correct me if I misunderstood the situation:
- you need to clean 0012 and 001F tapes on the cluster only, right?
There's no Rmm or Tcdb information for them, right?
Did you tried, just for one tape, to define it on tcdb with CREA VOLENT
with UATTR(SCRATCH) and force an ALTER on it? Did
Hi,
If category code 0002 doesn't have Expire Hold=On, you don't have to
wait the expire time passes before eject request.

Hi,
If you show us the RMM LV result, we could investigate the volume status.
Anyway, the current RMM Volume registry must be unreliable.
So could you execute RMM DELETEVOLUME volser FORCE NOEJECT prior to RMM
ADDVOLUME & RMM DELETEVOLUME RELEASE ?

The symptoms I am seeing are confusing me.
If I try to do an RMM AV for a volume. RMM says it is already there.
If I try to search for the volumes under the ISPF interface, nothing is found.
The entries are there because they show up in the RELEASE list. They refuse
to show up in any
Hi,
EDG8194I means the volume status is not "pending release" but master or
user.
Have you executed the following steps before EDGSPLCS SQ ?
Were they successful ?
Could you give me "RMM LISTVOLUME volser ALL" result ?
3. Add volume entry in RMM CDS as follows.
RMM ADDVOLUME volcat

Tom,
A tape known to RMM must be in pending release to use EDGSPLCS S command. A
tape not known to RMM(DV volser FORCE NOJECT) however should be able to be
moved to SCRATCH with EDGSPLCS S command.
Thank you. This is very helpful and mirrors my own attempts to get these
tapes removed.
RMM is still fighting me with its split personality on whether those tapes
exist or not.
The SQ commands are failing with
EDG8194I CHANGE USE OF VOLUME TD0080 REFUSED - VOLUME STATUS MAY ONLY BE
CHANGED
It sounds like a good topic to write a blog post on.

Tom,
Maybe write to the tapetools email addr that's within the file(s)?
The last resort is to find a h/w support crew that supports IBM VTLs.

If they have something in TAPETOOLS, they hide it well.
I can find nothing anywhere that allows me to send the 'super secret' override
to change a tape from private category to scratch with the hopes of being able
to EJECT them from the entire VTS grid.
The IBM 'Nanny state' does not allow
Hi,
You can delete them as follows.
1. Ensure the scratch category codes in DEVSUPxx is defined on the
target VTS.
2. Create volume entry in the VOLCAT as follows. If LIBNAME and/or
SGNAME is not defined, define them before CREATE VOLENT.
CREATE VOLUMEENTRY (NAME(Vvolser)
That's good news then.
The tapetool I linked to earlier should have everything you need.

Yes I have the list -- I know them by naming standard and I can do a Virtual
Volume Search to the Cluster and get a downloadable list of volume names and
their current category status.I already have a REXX roughed out that
generates the command I think I need. But I really need to find
Hi Tom,
Do you already know the names of the volumes that are now in no man's land?
Isn't that required for Brian's suggestion to work?
I suggest digging through https://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tapetool/ to see
if anything in there will help.
You may not find anything to find the volumes,
Well Gang, Brian has throw out a challenge.Does product B have the same
utility as product A And will it do this?
Anybody used CATSYNC under EDGUTIL of DFSMSrmm?Does this even apply to this
situation? Any examples, or, better yet a working example?
I only have a 1000 or so
In CA1 it's easy.
Define the volser to VOLCAT using IDCAMS
Then run utility program CTSSYNC, first with
SCRATCH volser, then with EJECT volser
Doesn't RMM have something similar?

I am faced with repeating a process that I have gotten to work once, but do not
remember how.
Been working with libraries since the 1990's and a B18 with a serial number

everything in between.
What I am facing today is
