The undesirable other extreme is as IBM did in splitting the Assembler Callable
Services
simply by alphabetic ranges. Search, Index, and ToC become less useful.

The page at shows some organization
into "shelves", but not what I'm used to. I see no shelf for Unix System
Services
as formerly.

The 1GB .zip does have a .pdx. I overlooked it earlier somehow. It organizes
search results by relevance. But some may find the Adobe Reader requirement
onerous.

But no index.htm[l].

And the collection expands into "zOS310-GA-Indexed-PDF-package-(2023-09-29)/".
I'm uncomfortable with using shell metacharacters in path names.

Re: z/OS 3.1 documentation

2023-09-29 Thread Bob Bridges
CA has taken to combining all their various TSS manuals into one gigantic PDF;
no more individual manuals for installation, the admins, the CFILE, reporting
and trouble-shooting, messages and so on, they're all just chapters in one PDF.
 I dislike it, but I don't see that I have any option but to get used to it.

So when you said you can't select individual manuals, I thought maybe IBM had
taken up the practice too. But no, you said "set of PDF files", so I guess you
found them all in a single downloaded ZIP and cannot select individual PDFs to
be downloaded without everything else?

Why doesn't IBM simply raise the default unilaterally?

Not at all. No PL/x is available to students on the Zxplore z/OS system.
COBOL, PL/I, XLC/XLC++, HLASM, python, and a bash shell environment for Unix
access. No GNU utilities, no gcc, etc. No xlclang products.

Zxplore provides some of this, though in a *very* constrained environment.
Some of the "challenges" are quite educational and instructive, but you don’t
get to "play around" with system-level changes, only application-level stuff
(along with a few interesting devops tasks).

No installing any software at all is allowed, not even python packages in a
python virtual environment. Definitively NOT a vehicle for training systems
programming personnel.

Possibly, but since most if not all of the actual PL/X code in the operating
system and products is not supplied (except for some macro expansions), there
is very little (likely zero) chance of that happening.

That may be more of an issue at this point, though the number of ISV's who may
have licenses is probably far smaller than it once was due to vast
consolidation in the ISV ranks, though I almost forgot the ISV's / outsourcers
that have been hired to maintain IBM internal source.

My own opinion of the root cause at this point is institutional inertia and
"old think" in the IBM executive suite, quite possibly admixed with legitimate
fear of bad-actor nation-states and criminal black hats.

Hi Peter,
There is another solution ... make PL/ available especially to
students/enthusiasts/hobbyists.
While doing that, provide an "amateur" version of z/OS for the same
crowd and allow *anyone* to run it on Hercules (or equivalent) on
Intel/AMD hardware.
It's not yet (but almost) too late to stop the Big Iron golden goose

These 2 suggestions might cause a renewed interest for next generation

Based on examples in what was then the Admin Ref. I wrote a Rexx script
that works in OMVS, IRXJCL, or ISPF and unloads (almost) all the spool
data sets of a job into a UNIX hierarchy.

My narrowminded co-workers deemed it useless. ("UNIX!?")

I used IEBGENER rather than EXECIO. SDSF allocates with (almost)
the right attributes (WAD) and i used alternate ddmame list to override
SYSUT1

"Almost all"? There's a JES3 spool file that IEBGENER can't handle.
I bypassed it.

Residual wishlist items:
o Suss FILEDATA()? I guessed according to DDNAME.
o Suss CCSID? Why isn't that a spool data set attribute? Idea?

I am also testing https://www.web.gar.no/glink-for-android. I think I am liking

Glink seems to have macro and import/export support while Mocha seems not to.

AFAIK, PL/S II was the last version for which IBM issued unrestricted
documentation; I would assume that manuals for, e.g., PL/8, PL/AS, PL/X,  are

In summary I'm requesting that IBM add a READ_ME_FIRST_ZOS_V3R1_TOC.HTM as

It would also be VERY NICE if they made it more obvious how/where to

Having seen the announcement of z/OS 3.1 today I have tried to obtain the
usual PDF collection of documentation.

I found it can be downloaded in zip form here, by selecting "IBM z/OS
Indexed PDF/PDX Collection". This has given me the set of pdf files.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/3.1.0

However, there seems to be no way of selecting individual manuals by title,
as there was at previous z/OS levels.

Have I downloaded the wrong package? Or is this no longer to be available?

 How about IBM Z Open Automation Utilities, there is a free version without
subscription and support.
jls to find the job id
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zoau/1.2.x?topic=reference-jls
ddls to list ddnames for a given job id
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zoau/1.2.x?topic=reference-ddls
then pjdd to print the output for a given job id and job dd
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zoau/1.2.x?topic=reference-pjdd
Those are unix commands, so you could write a script and run it with BPXBATCH
and then copy or print to Dataset.

- any production / adhoc CA-1 tape inquiry batch (e.g., TMSBINQ, TMSGRW,
CA-EARL reports) - migrate to near-equivalent RMM
- any possible z/OS tape dataset chargeback data-feed that relies on CA-1
TMS/TMC today - migrate to near-equivalent RMM CDS (nightly snapshot / using
EDGRHSKP / PARM=RPTEXT)
- any obscure interface-calls with CA-1 tape mgmt involved, such as INFOPAC,
CA-11/RMS (TMS SVC issue)

Likely impact level will be determined by just how much effort is applied to
"..remove CA-1 from the system..".

Unless something major has changed (which would break lots of things),
only the EXEC PGM= module has to be AC(1). Here's an abstract from
the UCLA/IPC linked:

//  EXEC LKED,PARM.LKED='RENT,REUS,XREF,LIST,LET,NCAL,MAP'
//LKED.SYSLMOD DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.IPCAPF,UNIT=,SPACE=
//LKED.IPCMOD  DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS9.IPCMOD
//LKED.SYSIN   DD *
  ..several include statments..
  ..several order statements..
  ENTRY IPCMAIN
  SETCODE AC(1)
  NAME IPCMAIN(R)  -- IPC STC/TASK ROUTINE(S)

  ..several include statments..
  ..several order statements..
  ENTRY IPCINIT
  NAME IPCINIT(R) -- IPC SUBSYSTEM INIT ROUTINE

//  EXEC LKED,PARM.LKED='XREF,LIST,LET,NCAL,MAP'
//LKED.SYSLMOD DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.IPCAPF,UNIT=,SPACE=
//LKED.IPCMOD  DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS9.IPCMOD
//LKED.SYSIN   DD *
  ..several include statments..
  ..several order statements..
  ENTRY IPCGCA *** ENTRY POINT AT OFFSET 0 ***
  NAME IPCCSA(R) -- IPC CSA MODULE (SVC/SRB RTNS)

This worked and the IPCMAIN routine received control authorized. No other
modules are AC(1). Issuing loads on the other modules which are not AC(1)
but are in an authorized library worked just fine.

If the search program fetch does finds the module in a non-authorized
library it will issue an abend. A concatenation can not have
any non-authorized libraries in it and remain authorized.

Be extra careful with this desciption as it likely only applies to a
single job step. (The job pack queue of modules is related to the job
step task. There's likely more than one in the TSO address space related
to this discussion...)

> Regardless of a module use count I thought once the TCB in control

LOAD requests are tied to the TCB issuing them however the module is
fetched into the job pack area anchored to the jobstep task (and has a
JPQ use count).

At some point in task termination all the modules loaded by the
terminating task get unloaded. This decreases the use count for each
of the modules which were loaded by this task in the JPQ too.

I'd expect that task termination causes each RB on the TCB to exit which
frees any module requested via ATTACH/LINK/ATTACH as these requests
(and use counts) normally get lowered by normal exit.

For more information which is slightly outdated see:

  SY28-0764-0_OS_VS2_System_Logic_Library_Vol_4_Rel_3.7_Jul76.pdf

https://archive.org/details/bitsavers_ibm370OSVSystemLogicLibraryVol4Rel3.7Jul76_23459458

A lot can change in 47 years but not everything...

They are likely freed when the use counts get to zero. As above
load requests are tied to the task issuing load. The use counts for
LINK/ATTACH/XCTL are tied to the RB created for that transfer of
control and are released when the RB exits (or issues XCTL which is
similar to exit as far a module usage goes).

Abnormal termination likely walks the RB chain and points all the saved
PSW instruction pointers to EXIT so they all go away. The last RB
calling exit is end of task.

All the links from our main NJE/IP Bridge site should be accessible once

They were still behind our private network after our website

Looking forward to hearing about your thoughts on the product.

We are investigating what is necessary to remove CA-1 from the system after
turning on RMM in protect mode.

My original plan was to us TMSINIT to remove CA-1 and disable the PROC
(TMSINIT) prior to starting DFRMM...

Or do I need to move it's SVC, re-IPL and not start TMSINIT and then start
DFRMM...

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Charles,
What AIA info does your certificate have, for example authorityInfoAccess
= OCSP;URI:http://10.1.0.2:2000

Is your OCSP server running with the URL in the AIA info?
