Irish data centers....an opportunity?
Recently the BBC posted an article about how the grow in Irish data centers (or "centres" for the Brits) is causing a possible power crises. See "Can we make the internet less power-thirsty?" (https://www.bbc.com/news/business-64429819). Sounds like a great opportunity for IBM to highlight the sustainability of large numbers of Linux on z servers running on a z16 box. Hopefully somebody at IBM is taking a hard look at this now. And the Brits seem to get it: - He points out that using the term "cloud" is highly misleading, as it is "a very physical thing". The cloud does not float in the atmosphere, it consists of computer servers with a vast appetite for electricity. The Irish example highlights how a combination of environmental concerns and worries about capacity in the grid have triggered a race to save the reputation of the data centre industry. -- DJ -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

Many thanks for sharing everyone's thoughts on this matter. I think that there are a lot of applications that could benefit from having access to the capabilities of a GPU or two (or ten:-), maybe not as a replacement or competitor for large Intel-based supercomputers, of course. Applications like data mining and ML have numerical requirement too, I believe. Once upon a time......
IBM was known for making some really nice scientific number-crunching systems. The 7090-7094, the S/360-195 and the follow-on s/370-195, the array processor 3838 and the vector instruction set supported by the 30xx models come to mind. Over time, and with the rise of the Intel-based chips and their floating point capabilities, IBM decided not to pursue that market any more. Now I am wondering if, perhaps, the time is right for IBM to re-consider that decision. On modern z processors, we already have IEEE floating point instructions in the hardware, Linux (a popular options for Intel-base number-crunch systems), and support for PCI.e IBM is already allowing 3rd-party SSD drives to be attached and accessed by the o/s. What if we were able to connect a number, say, 40, of GPU cards (like the Nvida Tesla 1000) to a z box. Have the I/O system pass the GPU card directly an LPAR running on the system. Porting the CUDO drives over to Linux (or z/OS, or CMS for that matter) does not appear to be that difficult and the hardware changes should be transparent to the o/s. Linux already supports a large number of scientific. software applications, runs the latest versions of popular scientific languages (FORTRAN, C/C++, Python). I believe the IBM z would be well-suited to this, as the density of cards in the PCIe cages is far greater than the density that could be obtained in normal PCs. This, combined with the strong sysplex clustering ability of z/OS (or SSI on z/VM) could allow the system Z platform to pack more computing power into a smaller footprint than a comparable Intel-based Linux cluster system, while being easier to use as programs would not have to be rewritten to take advantage of the system's clustering. It might be an easy sell on it's energy-reduction assets alone, since everyone is now worried about how much energy data-centers now consume. Thoughts/comments/objections welcome, of course. Full disclosure: this idea was first suggested to me by Enzo Damato after his tour of the POK lab. Re: Use of zCX
I agree with Robert's objections to zCX, and, frankly, If all a site wants to do is run zLinux applications on an IBM z system, it is much simpler (and perhaps cheaper) to just install z/VM on the box and then host as many Linux guests as you want. No extra external tooling is needed; just use out of the box management apps that are already available. Plus, the system programmers have much greater and finer, control over the hardware resources (memory, CPU, etc.) each zLinux guest is allowed to consume. And of course, z/VM and zLinux run very well on the full speed IFL engines, no other specialty engines required. Connect the z/VM and z/OS LPARs together by hyper-sockets and you're good to go. If I was an z/OS shop looking towards Linux, that's how I would proceed. Thought and comments always welcome. New versions of IPGATE and RXSCKET
Greetings, all. (This message will be of interest to the z/VM community, but I am posting here for completeness.) Just in time for the first full day of summer, 2021 (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), there are now new versions of both IP{GATE and RXSOCKET. The highlights of there new versions are: 1) for RXSOCKET: support for the new TLS IOCTLs has been added, sockets can now be encrypted, queried, etc. support for IPv6 addressing Just about anything that can be done by a C program using the new TCPIP library can be done by RXSOCKET 2) for IPGATE: support for IPv6 addresses support for TLS encrypted links This is of course built on top of the new RXSOCKET module. You can now share SFS servers across z/VM systems securely and that ought to make the network security guys very happy. There is also a working Rexx server and client based on IPv6 as examples, as well.Please drop me a note if you'd like to experiment with them. Open Mainframe Project members and community, We just announced today with support from Open Mainframe Project members Broadcom, IBM, Phoenix Software, Rocket Software, SUSE, Vicom Infinity, and Zoss Team, a series of initiatives to support the need for COBOL expertise in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Please see the blog announcement made below... https://www.openmainframeproject.org/blog/2020/04/09/open-mainframe-project-helps-fill-the-need-for-cobol-resources Please share the below social posts with your networks: Twitter: https://twitter.com/OpenMFProject/status/1248327010268610572 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6654097221400829952/ As we all are members of the mainframe community, supporting each other in this time of need is critical. Each of you in the community has an opportunity to be a part of this by... - posting your availability for volunteer or work-for-hire work for state and local governments and other critical organizations in need with COBOL in the 'Calling all COBOL Programmers' topic on the OMP Community Forums ( https://community.openmainframeproject.org/c/calling-all-cobol-programmers/15 ) - providing your expertise to others that are working on COBOL systems that are responding to the COVID-19 crisis in the 'COBOL technical questions' topic on the OMP Community Forums ( https://community.openmainframeproject.org/c/cobol-technical-questions/16 ) Each and every one of us is a critical piece in helping overcome this global pandemic, and I know that the mainframe community is one to step up to the challenge. Thank you all for your dedication, and I look forward to working with you in this cause. Re: Software Delivery on Tape to be Discontinued
Howdy, Steve. I, too, as a student at TAMU in the early to mid 70s and what I remember was that it was an Amdahl 470/V6 that was delivered to the DPC (Data Processing Center, we Aggies are very literal about a lot of things). The day it arrived and was set up in the machine room, replacing the old IBM S/360-65, the center's director was none too pleased about the burnt orange skin color. He had the Amdahl CEs take the covers off, and out to the parking lot, where they were repainted Maroon with spray cans of Rust-Oleum from the local hardware store. Gig 'em. Hello, Munif. First, welcome to the z/Linux community. A very good place top post such questions as yours is the "Linux on 390 Port" listserv. Instructions on how to subscribe to it or browse the archives can be found here: http://www.vm.ibm.com/techinfo/listserv.html Since you are interested in running Red Hat, the RedHat 7, installation instructions for installing it in an LPAR on z are in a chapter of this document: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/installation_guide/index It has the step by step process you need to follow, and, of course, if you have any questions about something that's not clear, you can ask on the LINUX-290 list. Folks there are always willing to help out a newbie. Good luck. Re: curious: Popularity & use of C on z/OS.
Hi, Paul. Yes, using gcc390 requires a Linux system, either z/Linux running on the mainframe (in which case, the normal s390x gcc compiler is used), or Linux on Intel, using gcc in a cross compiler mode. Re: curious: Popularity & use of C on z/OS.
Hi, Paul. I would guess that it is not, but since the gcc it uses is just the "normal" available gcc on a Linux distro, any updates to that are automatically used by the gcc390 process steps.Very handy to have if what you want to do is take some C code and get it ported over the the CMS envrionment. I have this simple sort JCL,, which works fine,,, I have not aligned the header yet,, but will do that later as I am adding fields … Ihave attached the output from the run so you can see the results .. All I want do, is this,, (add this column(s) to the report..) FROM THE outrec multiply the time ,, in this case 14.59 like this .. (14*60) +59 to get total seconds Then,, divide the Total I/O rate by the preciously calculated seconds, to get I/O rate.. Everything I have tried doesn’t seem to work .. Any thoughts? *//* //SYSINDD * SORT FIELDS=(051,04,CH,A,892,12,CH,D) INCLUDE COND=(43,4,CH,EQ,C'SUMC') OPTION NOLIST,MSGPRT=CRITICAL OUTFIL FNAMES=RPTOUT, HEADER1=(001:'** SAMPLE REPORT SORTED BY SYSID TOTAL IO COUNT **', /,001:05' '), HEADER2=(001:' TOTAL IO', 018:'DATE', 029:'TIME', 039:'SERIAL #', 051:'CUID', 057:'VEND', 063:'READ BYTES', 077:'WRITE BYTES', /,001:90'-'), OUTREC=(0051,04,02X'40', 0077,05,02X'40', 0892,12,02X'40', 0059,10,02X'40', 0069,08,02X'40', 0712,12,02X'40', 0121,04,02X'40', 0703,04,02X'40', 0760,12,02X'40', 0808,12,40X'40') /* *//* Output 1** SAMPLE REPORT SORTED BY SYSID TOTAL IO COUNT ** 1 *//*TOTAL IO DATE TIME SERIAL # CUID VEND READ BYTES WRITE BYTES -- THRA 14.59 02893000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6400 IBM 00015410 2080 THRA 14.59 02785000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6280 IBM 00014670 2100 THRA 14.59 0277 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6300 IBM 00015060 1620 THRA 14.59 02696000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6180 IBM 00014310 1810 THRA 14.59 0256 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6380 IBM 00013340 2090 THRA 14.59 02463000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6080 IBM 00014460 0380 THRA 14.59 02022000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6200 IBM 00010550 1470 THRA 14.59 02021000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6480 IBM 8780 2720 THRA 14.59 01926000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6000 IBM 9510 1360 THRA 14.59 01885000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK231 6100 IBM 9510 1870 THRA 14.59 01411000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000VC941 9780 IBM 6960 1670 THRA 14.59 01278000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000VC941 9800 IBM 6230 1590 THRA 14.59 01126000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK811 7580 IBM 3520 2410 THRA 14.59 01074000 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000VC941 9880 IBM 5210 1310 THRA 14.59 00590515 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK241 D000 IBM 1540 1640 THRA 14.59 00556085 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK811 7080 IBM 0480 2600 THRA 14.59 00555184 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK241 D180 IBM 0300 2530 THRA 14.59 00553421 09/20/2014 22.15.00 000ZK241 D400 IBM 1660 2190 --- Granted, it's not the clearest question I've ever been asked:-) Thanks. Re: ASM calling C or C++ subroutines
You also may want to take a look at using the Creating and using persistent C environments section of the z/OS XL C/C++ Programming Guide. It documents how to call C functions from assembler in an efficient way. The assembler does not need to be LE-conformant, either. Mad Men and the IBM 360
A posting to the VM list from Billy Bingham: I haven't watched Mad Men before, but while channel surfing last night I saw the opening sequence that featured a IBM 360. Not sure what model it was.
