The interesting question to me is "which colours"?

I would say we started with a 3-bit colour space: R, G, B. And so the
colour Red is 100 in this space and a more complex colour like Yellow is
probably 110.

Is this right, though?

In particular I'd be surprised if a 4th bit weren't used. But for what?

Very early 1980s - earlier than I remember support for DIDOCS or ISPF.
And almost certainly GDDM was under development in parallel with the
3279 hardware; IBM rarely comes out with hardware on a whim that has
no software to support it. One must also remember that the 3279 was
merely the first implementation of an architectural shift in the 3270
series.

Even as AFP works if the writer for the PCL printer writer is AFP-savvy.

And PDF is more commonly supported than AFP.  IBM distributes the z/OS

For Host V(iewing) in SDSF GDDM and graphics terminal are required. There are
AFP vierwers forPC at the Ricoh site. INFO Print converts to whatever is

How does an AFP data spool file appear viewed with SDSF?  Does it matter
if the terminal has graphic capability?

I might expect desktop AFP viewers, most likely for Windows.

Ideally for portability, graphic spool files should be in a common format
such as PDF (MacOS appear to do that), PostScript, SVG, ...

Whenever I tried to reply (and I tried several times with different content) my

"Your posting  to the  IBM-MAIN list  has been rejected  because it  contains an

I don't see any attachment of any kind ... how is it I should 'reply' to a

I did send an email to the list owner but have gotten no response. Thanks in

Having a written constitution helps set the foundation for our Republic. It's
pretty straightforward. The Feds are charged with controlling 'enumerated'
responsibilities. The states are responsible for everything else. Where the
boundaries overlap or converge the courts decide. This is not a finished
product and national vs State's rights has been argued from the very beginning
of our nation.

Re: Storage & tape question

The biggest whomp I heard about was at Midwestern data-center. Highway
department dropped a load of ammonium nitrate to widen the Interstate. Over the
weekend lightning hit the trailer and kaboom-ed 32k lbs. It was about halfway
between primary and secondary data centers. Knocked out the bearings on all
their SLEDs at both sites.
Saw them at a tuning conference a few weeks later and they still looked like
zombies.

There was a neat presentation at SHARE by one of the paint companies in the
Susquehanna Valley about single point of failure. I forget all the details but
again highway department knocked off the side of a cliff. It had their freshly
run fiber between Headquarters, data center and backup. Nothing was damaged but
the fiber. They just couldn't talk to each other. Ended up running fiber over
an abandoned railroad trestle. One of the sysprogs was a climber and had him
upside down repelling over the river.

Re: Instruction speeds

2019-08-14 Thread Edward Finnell
IBM has published the LSPR numbers for thirty years. They're a ballpark of what
to expect. Each company should have a benchmark workload for capacity planning
and growth. In 2017 WDC came out with MF counters to help measure the effects
of different
workloads.http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/TC66

There have been some whoppers in reporting. Like the 9672-n3 to n4 weren't
adding up to expectations. Cheryl pointed out what had happened was they ran
out of room on the chip and had to add an off-board processor for some of the
instructions. It was really nasty in some of the COBOL programs with Indexed by
usage was high. So in the LSPR numbers no COBOL pgms with Indexed-by were used.
There were also a couple z9's sent back because they were slower than the
predecessors with 'old COBOL'. Always something...In a message dated 8/14/2019

For example, in DFSMShsm Storage Administration is where the SMF records are

Unless your shop changed the numbers, they are typically 240/241

So long as your z/OS System programmer or Stg Admin has set HSM to capture SMF,
then you will need to determine how the SMF data is offloaded and stored at
your shop.  If you can issue the command F dfhsm-stc-name,Q SETSYS - that will
