Decades ago when I had first discovered the exciting geekery of computer
programming, I remarked in a passing group of fellow enthusiasts that this
was the most fun I'd ever had in my life. One of them said "Yeah? Would
you be interested in a job this fall?" So the Academic Computer Center
hired me (just a student job) to a) run a HASP station and b) help other
students debug their programs.

The latter would come to the desk, all confused: "I ran this program last
semester and it worked, but now it's failing and [all chorus it together
with me] I DIDN'T CHANGE A THING!".

The response is always simple: Well, let's look at the compile errors. And
it was almost always right there. This was a PL/C compiler with lots of
willingness to guess, so it might say "Stm 53: Missing right parenthesis in
column 14".

And the student then says "Oh, well, I did change that ONE statement..."

The point of this rambling digression is this: If you want someone to help
you diagnose your program at a distance, and you say "I keep getting
errors", mightn't it be helpful to say WHAT errors? This is kind of basic.
Quote them exactly, please.

I am trying to transfer a file using Connect:Direct from one z/OS system to
another. I need to specify both STORCLAS and DATACLAS. This is what I am
writing:

CPYSEQ PROCESS-
SNODE=RTST
 COPY1 COPY-
   FROM (DSN=G120NTN.KVTNKSP.UNLOAD-
 DISP=SHR  -
 PNODE -
) -
   TO (DSN=G120NTN.KVTNKSP.UNLOAD-
 DISP=(NEW,CATLG)  -
 SPACE=(CYL,(999,),RLSE)   -
 SYSOPTS="STORCLAS=RKF1 DATACLAS=EXT" -
 SNODE -
)

And I keep getting errors.

How to I specify more than one parameter in SYSOPTS. I've tried writing a
comma between the parameters with the same results.

I seem to notice a trend here on IBM-MAIN. Ive been active for probably 25
years on it, and the benefits I have received, and presume at least some of the
advice/info I have provided has been helpful for some.

But what I notice, and I know none of these people personally, is that as folks
age we seem to get grumpier, and have to be "RIGHT" all the time. Why is
that? Thinking back over the years, I recall Ed Gould, liked to argue before
he faded away off the list, then there was Chris Mason (RIP), that would argue
USS and whether it was ok to use for VTAM or Unix, and now we have our latest
example raging as we speak.

I'm nearing the end of my career too, well maybe not that close, but turned 60
this year. I certainly hope I age a bit more gracefully, and not argue if the
sky is blue or turquoise.

Have a good weekend, all.

OA55138: SYSJOBID AND SYSJOBNM INCORRECTLY DOCUMENTED IN THE MVS JCL REFERENCE
V2R3

On page 50 of the MVS JCL Reference V2R3 under section "Using
the SYSUID system symbol" is the following statement referring
to SYSUID, SYSJOBNM and SYSJOBID:

"These symbols are available to JCL and can be used in in-stream
datasets, and are exported to the running address space."

The statement is misleading because it implies SYSJOBNM and
SYSJOBID can be used in in-stream datasets without an implicit
EXPORT/SET statement like SYSUID. This is not the case.

When SYSJOBNM/SYSJOBID are used in-stream without being
exported, it will result in the literal words "" and
"" appearing in-stream, with no substitution.

 isn't a system symbol. It's a JES2 symbol.

should work for this purpose, I use it. The other is for JCL
(only, it seems) where usually resolves to "JES2".

IEBGENER and JES System Symbol

 - JES System Symbol (Name of the job - SASSTEST)
- Dynamic System Symbols

According to IBM, I should be able to use (substitute) the values of these
symbols into the In-Stream Data,
if I code "SYMBOLS=EXECSYS" on the DD Statement.
Below is a PROC and Pend executing IEBGENER and the contents of the output file:

Question: Why wasn't the value of the JES System Symbol (SASSTEST) substituted
in the two records, but the values of the Dynamic System Symbols were
substituted?

The separator line is CRLF, no other character. A line containing SP CR LF will
not work. I suspect that the SMTP and CSSMTP external writers have the smarts
to strip out extraneous spaces; that should be easy to test.

Is the line separating the headers from the body absolutely empty?
RFC 822 requires this, but the ISPF Editor abhors empty lines
(Why, dammit!) and tends to pad them with a single blank.

Re: Send an email with a Zip file as an attachment?

2022-04-27 Thread Sasso, Len
If I specify either:

CONTENT-TYPE: APPLICATION/ZIP; BOUNDARY="SIMPLE BOUNDARY"
CONTENT-DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENT; FILENAME=TEST.ZIP
CONTENT-TRANSFER-ENCODING: BINARY

or

CONTENT-TYPE: APPLICATION/OCTET-STREAM; BOUNDARY="SIMPLE BOUNDARY"
CONTENT-DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENT; FILENAME=TEST.ZIP
CONTENT-TRANSFER-ENCODING: BINARY

I receive the message below from 7-Zip, when I attempt to extract the file:

Can not open file "TEST.ZIP" as archive.

using

on the IEBGENER job ?

I'm not sure if there's maybe a parm needed on the PKZIP job to be
comparable with PKZIP on window ?

Len,

The link is active, however most browsers stopped supporting FTP access. You
can use FTP Clients such as (Filezilla, Winscp...or the good old command prompt
if you are on windows) using Anonymous logon and you should be able to download
the document.
If you are having trouble downloading the document, I can send it offline as
IBM-MAIN list prohibits PDF file as attachments.

Thanks,

I doubt Jesus said a man unwilling or unable to work shouldn’t eat. And, I’m
not surprised the low wage earners are unwilling to work for $2.13/hour (tipped
wage) plus tips. The federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up in over a decade. If
the minimum wage I worked for in 1975 had kept pace with inflation, it would be
over $20 an hour now. In most of Europe, restaurant workers make a living wage
plus benefits. Tipping is optional. Plus, their health care is single payer and
better/cheaper. Don’t get me started on their fabulous infrastructure, mass
transit, and education systems.
Factor in many don’t want to go back to work while a fourth wave of covid is
raging. (Thanks to the GOP and trumpers pushing against public health) Then
there are women who can’t afford child care because it eats up the majority of
their wages. Funny that the build back better legislation intended to address
that and provide child care help like most of the rest of the world provides.
My brother in law made a career out of the restaurant business. He’s making 6
figures now as a regional director but works 70 hour weeks, has had 2 heart
attacks, smokes like a chimney, and will never see retirement from the hamster
wheel.
Younger Americans are not buying into the rat race. Conspicuous consumption
isn’t their religion. And as we are seeing, the baby boomers are much to blame
for global warming, the results we are seeing in fires, floods, polar icecaps
melting, and yes, the recent record setting tornadoes in Kentucky, Tennessee, &
other states.
America is in decline when a two bit reality TV show host, who lies
incessantly, has molested 20+ women, cheats on his taxes, and tried to overturn
a free and fair election, can get 35% of the populace to follow him.

Hi Brian,

That was part of why I posed the initial question. Is IBM
repackaging/reselling JED (or some other JCL checker) or are they rolling their
own? Guess we'll have to wait until next year to see what it's all about. My
company is considering getting a JCL checker (no sales calls please..., we're
not at that point) so the announcement piqued my interest.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

I know nothing about this company/software and their claim, we're in the same
boat and I found them while researching. I haven't tried their software yet.

Here's their claim:

Z-Writer is the quick-code utility for z/OS mainframes. Its native syntax is
very similar to competing quick-code tools such as DYL-280, Easytrieve, Quikjob
and CA-Earl. If you are using one of those programs, you'll be able to run your
existing programs on Z-Writer with only minor changes.

And with our ZWDYL interface, you can actually run all your existing DYL-280
(VISION:Results) program without any changes to either the program code or the
JCL. Our ZWQUIK interface (beta) lets you do the same thing for your Quikjob
(VISION:Report) programs.

The company is called Pacific Systems Group and their website is
https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/*www.pacsys.com__;!!IfVdvpvC!CRxRrdvGWX-0nF0bVEqPXCKpp-epQtvKj6gCX4cYLqYFJPS6BQu-VN7SsHFfHy0Q$__;Lw!!JRQnnSFuzw7wjAKq6ti6!lIkp7xHfxb1h6PPHaMRI9y3NkCXL44B7OHGt-ZGA2sPa1ZQbvTCFOYFQ0W7WRQ$
. Let me know if you check it out and how they work for you. I will say I
checked pricing and at least at this point in time for us, their price isn't
much less than the CA products we're looking to replace.

Rex

Hi Len Sasso,

As mentioned, you can roll your own and invoke an ICSF service routine, or you
can use one of several z/OS crypto products. I work for ASPG, so am
particularly familiar with MegaCryption on z/OS. With MegaCryption this can be
done using the MGCMAIN utility or via an application call to a crypto
subroutine library. Since you may already be a customer, I will send you
additional details offline.

HTH,
Mike

Mike designed REXX as a programming language. JCL is not and was never intended
to be a programming language. This is something that should be handled in the
environment that creates and submits the JCL.

I understand that system symbols are not supported in JCL DSNs because of
o ambiguity between EXECSYS and CNVTSYS
o queue latency -- the job might run at a time not matching the JCL symbols.

(If the actual date and time values are important I understand they
may be invalid because around midnight date and time might be
fetched on different days, resulting in a 23+ hour error.  Murphy
says this will only be a problem when it matters.  Rexx can do it
right; why can't JCL?)

Use the seconds also, as D200917.T112359.  With thousands of entries
a collision is likely.  And use YYMMDD for the date for easy sorting of
displays.

Is it possible to rename a tape data set?  That would seem to require
overwriting the HDR1 label, but tapes can't be updated in place.

I'm imagining a sequence such as:

Momentarily catalog HLQ.FICHE.TAPE

DEFINE ALIAS HLQ.FICHE.TAPE.D200917.T112359
    SYMBOLICRELATE HLQ.FICHE.TAPE

Uncatalog HLQ.FICHE.TAPE.  I understand that symbolic aliases
remain when the RELATED name is uncatalogued.

Grant Taylor asks:
>What happens to email if CSSMTP (AT-TLS) is configured

>support encryption?

Fundamentally the same thing(s) that happen when the network connection is
down or too slow (times out), for whatever reasons. Network encryption is
part and parcel of the network path. This class of failures must already
be catered for. In this case, Len Sasso's organization is mandating TLS
1.2+, and I agree with Shmuel Metz who wrote:
>If management has decreed that all SMTP traffic be encrypted,
>then barring a configuration error the relay will accept
>encrypted traffic.

Moreover, it's entirely possible that your attitude would only increase
relay administrators' burdens, the people who currently have to manage,
support, monitor, and audit the e-mail traffic from the one and only
system still transmitting over an unencrypted connection, a connection
modality they'd very much like to retire as quickly as possible. You know,
that "old, obsolete mainframe" that you're actively arguing should
actually be as old and obsolete as you can possibly force it to be. (TLS
is *really* not new.) Or it's entirely possible that the relay
administrators aren't inclined or equipped to provide even mediocre
service levels for unencrypted connections, or even that there's a lone
dedicated relay gathering dust in a wiring closet somewhere to support
this one unencrypted connection, a relay that nobody left in the
organization even understands or really knows about, that isn't backed up
or DR protected, that still runs on a 10 Mbps Ethernet segment that
miraculously hasn't been disconnected yet. Hence the unencrypted
connection is MORE prone to failure, not less. All very possible, even
predictable and likely. And I haven't even gotten to the regulatory issues
and penalties.

Conceivably you could also reduce or eliminate your personal security
authentication failure planning and handling (hopefully automated)
responsibilities if you effectively disable your SAF security provider,
such as RACF. Then those few pesky authentication and authorization
rejections wouldn't occur, and everyone could just go to the pub and stay
there (or whatever). That's the logical consequence of your argument,
isn't it? I don't think you've got a strong argument.

Sorry to be blunt here, but I feel compelled to offer my personal view (as
always). My colleagues (and I mean that word expansively, in and out of
IBM) work really hard to deliver and support truly cutting edge
capabilities, including downright amazing security capabilities, in/for
this unique and indispensable platform. And this community, overall, often
works really hard to put these capabilities into practice, in many cases
literally to keep civilization functioning. Then there are a few people
who manage a few of these systems, and...well, let's all strive to do
better, OK?

Then there's this fact, which Lionel Dyck kindly pointed out:
>CSSMTP is a send only SMTP service - it does not receive anything.

Exactly. This is about getting TLS 1.2+ encryption enabled from z/OS at
least as far as the next hop. CSSMTP alone doesn't provide a return
mailbox.

According to Google's latest Transparency Report, available here:

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://transparencyreport.google.com/safer-email/overview?hl=en__;!!JRQnnSFuzw7wjAKq6ti6!jQEpQBYYYTpvQzuolvNNqmVerCNjKRCLDoprizRvzc2Qp-ZFVX3swid6aX90zw$

93% of outgoing e-mail from Google and 94% of incoming e-mail to Google
rode over TLS between April 24, 2020, and July 23, 2020. Google's e-mail
services are heavily consumer-oriented ("How is piano practice going?"),
and well over 90% of it is encrypted in flight. Len Sasso is dealing with
an enterprise system, presumably. Maybe my cousin's medical insurance
claim acknowledgment is being e-mailed, or maybe your loan application
update is being e-mailed out to you. Does anyone seriously want to
question Len's requirement? Or would it be at least as appropriate to
question why you haven't enabled encryption for your SMTP and other
network traffic, if you haven't?

It's very frustrating to me when even basic security precautions and
practices are questioned like this. Get it turned on, please! It's quick,
easy, and no additional charge. And have a look at the z/OS Encryption
Readiness Tool ("zERT"), included with z/OS at no additional charge, to
get visibility on where you still have gaps.

>If you configure z/OS's CSSMTP to /require/ encryption, TLS 1.2 or
>otherwise, and the receiving SMTP system doesn't offer it, the email
>will be stuck on z/OS.

That's an available configuration choice, that's correct, and that's
exactly what *should* happen in myriad real world scenarios to avoid a
potential or actual security breach.

>Do you really want to have someone perform regular postmaster duties on
>z/OS?

As Lionel patiently explained, this is about whether Len Sasso's
requirement is satisfied, to encrypt e-mail traffic to the next hop. There
are no postperson duties here, not with CSSMTP. These are basic network
security duties, prudently practiced and respected for decades now.

But (hypothetically, off on your tangent) why not? It's an IMAP
mailbox the postperson(s) monitor, presumably. The postperson probably
isn't either configuring and administering a Kubernetes cluster or
navigating ISPF screens. If the mailbox were hosted on z/OS (yes, it can
be, with other software), what's the problem?

I'm a little confused here. Isn't this IBM-MAIN? Is there something you
wouldn't or don't like about providing more and more useful user services
from z/OS?

>It might be better to send the email to another exissting corporate
>SMTP server where someone is already handling the postmaster duties.

Yes, there's something else besides CSSMTP. OK, backing off that
tangent

>Simply enabling TLS on z/OS's CSSMTP is probably not sufficient to
>guarantee that the email transmission path to the next SMTP server will
>be encrypted.

It is if you configure AT-TLS to require it, which is par for the course
really.

>Both the sending end (CSSMTP) and the receiving end (remote SMTP server)
>need to support encryption.

Yes, and as you can see from Google's Transparency Report TLS isn't a rare
or exotic thing. (What year is this?)

>Most MTAs can be an encrypted client without their own TLS certificate.
>— Though a /client/ TLS certificate can be entertaining to use in place
>of username and password for authenticating the sending system to a
relay.
>}:-)

Not merely "entertaining." It's one perfectly reasonable, prudent security
measure

Sending email from the Mainframe

2020-07-21 Thread Sasso, Len
We are using CSSMTP to send email from the Mainframe. All our messages must
implement TLS 1.2 or higher for transport level encryption.

What you using?

Subject: JCL & UNIX coding.

I like to use UNIX facilities. Especially some scripting languages, such as
awk. I use Co:Z instead of BPXBATCH. Anyway, sine UNIX is case sensitive, my
"embedded" scripts must be in lower case. I don't want to keep my scripts in
another file. So my JCL member has embedded lower case. Which makes editing the
actual JCL a mess if I forget to use CAPS LOCK while editing the JCL portion.

So, I kind of wish that the JCL converter or interpreter would accept JCL in
lower case. In particular, upper casing the JCL statements which are not
inclosed in ticks. It would just make my life easier. I.E JCL should ignore
case when not in ticks.

Feel free to call me a lazy idiot {grin}.

I'm sorry, but I meant accessing, via a REST API, an external Website and
downloading a file from the external site?

Yes. You can find it, read it, and write it, in fact (and much more).

Please see Table 273 on PDF p. 508 in IBM z/OS Management Facility
Programming Guide, here, for a list of what you can do with the z/OSMF
data set and file REST API:

Does it include the ability to access and download a file from a REST API site?

Just so nobody tries to order z/OSMF...

z/OSMF is a base element of z/OS starting with z/OS V2.2, not an
orderable feature. You will (or did) get it as part of z/OS itself.

Before z/OS V2.2, z/OSMF was a separate priced product with a price of
zero dollars per value unit and the same price for support. ("Priced"
at zero dollars/pounds/yen/euros, etc.? Yup. You can't make some
things up, but that's how our systems work.)

As Timothy says, it has a variety of REST APIs. One he didn't mention
is the file and data set API that some might find useful. Also these
APIs are pretty rich, functionally. For example, the jobs API lets you
submit jobs, check their status, and retrieve their output--all from a
browser-based application if you'd like. We also added Cloud
Provisioning support during z/OS V2.2 so you can set up templates that
allow authorized people (like application developers) to instantiate and
tear down their own CICS AORs, DB2 data bases, MQ connections, and such.

It's worth mentioning that we added e-mail notifications from JCL on
JES2 systems in z/OS V2.3. (I always threatened to put the z/OSMF
architect's e-mail address in the examples.)

answer is yes it does.
We work closely with IBM to ensure our products support all of IBM's software
