IBM download director
Hi all During last days it seems that I cannot connect to my internet proxy server using IBM Download Director. So, I have to select direct connection instead of a proxy. Is this a known defect of the latest IBM download director ? Security/Integrity PTF's are flagged by FMID. If that is not known, it is hard to get/install the SEC/INT maintenance. The amount of additional work (just receive, apply, accept(opt) an additional few PTFs) to support JAVA via SMP/E is minimal and should take no more space that non-smp methods. For that reason I have chosen to install/maintain JAVA via SMP/E. I agree (in general) that SMP/E is overkill since the packaging method for JAVA maintenance is full replacement of the HFS/ZFS file. Just my $0.02 USD worth... snip The command: java_home/bin/java -version will tell you what version and maintenance level. IMO, it is not very useful to install Java on z/OS via SMP/E because of the way that it is maintained. The downside is the extra space required for SMP/E. I tend to take this approach as well. I believe Radoslaw was looking for 32 versus 64 bit on a Windows platform, since he is trying to use IBM Download Director. On the Windows platform I'm not sure it is quite as obvious as to whether we're running 32 or 64 bit. I found a Java directory under both Program Files and Program Files (x86). IBM Download Director and x64 Windows
Recently I changed my PC, now I'm using Windows 7 64-bit edition. It seems there is some 'gotcha' in this configuration - I cannot make IBM Download Director to be working. Of course the PC is behind the firewall, etc. However I tried the same configuration - JAVA level, browser type version, the same settings and it still does not work under Win x64. Funny observation: I can use other PC with Windows 32-bit or even Windows XP (32-bit) in virtual machine working under the Win7 x64 workstation! Could this be the solution: Java plug in issue with Download Director under Software Downloads. Users might encountered issues when downloading software with download director. Problems reported will be such as security settings blocked or error message such as untrusted or wrong certificates . Cause: Java has further enhanced security to make the user system less vulnerable to external exploits. I have just used Download Director with 64-bit Windows 7 a couple of minutes ago. I can only get it to work on Firefox or Chrome which is odd... Update: According to Sun (Oracle) suggestions I deinstalled Java 64-bit and left Java 32-bit. Reason: the browsers are 32-bit. Effect: no effect. :-((( BTW: I like the description how to recognize wether your Java or browser is 32-bit or 64-bit. IT'S NOT SHOWED ANYWHERE! For Java you can look at the control panel tabs: lack of Update tab means the Java is 64-bit. Abslutely no clue in under About (version) button. Similar cryptic way for browsers. Question for you; when you open up Windows Control Panel and then click on Programs NOT the Uninstall a program link, the one above it to get all the different program options, such as Default Programs. Do you see a line at the bottom for Java (32-bit)? My system does and when I click on it there is a pop-up Java Control Panel. In the General tab there is a View... button, when you click on it, does it bring up the Java Cache Viewer? if yes, in Show: make sure Applications is the selection and look for Download Director in the list of applications, then to the right under the Status column, is it showing up as a Green ICON? If it isn't, maybe you can delete the applet and get it reinstalled? PS: I agree determining the 32-Bit/64-Bit status of JAVA is a PAIN, in my previous job we had to determine it under z/OS, the person who originally set up JAVA, did NOT use the SMP/e install option! The command: java_home/bin/java -version will tell you what version and maintenance level. IMO, it is not very useful to install Java on z/OS via SMP/E because of the way that it is maintained. The downside is the extra space required for SMP/E. Does anyone see a benefit?
