The TP signals were a no show this morning at Monte Sano, with only a
few terribly weak carriers noted. A stark contrast from the amazing TP
conditions we experienced Saturday morning.

At 1020-1030, JOUB-774 is being heard here in North Alabama at the Monte Sano
DXpedition at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, Alabama. Woman talking in
Japanese, fairly steady signal for a few minutes.
Good TP carriers also noted on 747 and 693.
Receivers: Drake R-8, NRD-535,
I'm impressed. I think the ares of the country where Japan is most difficult

Now go get Korea.

Paul,
Sure, you can hear a station with 10 watts 5 miles or 10miles, but not
at S9+55DB 47 watts at 5 miles is not going to give you S9+55DB
directly from an EWE antenna to a receiver, unless you have alot of
amplication to push that S meter up. If the station was operating with 5
KW rather
Well, can someone explain exactly what S9+55db is to someone clueless like
me? I simply know thats a STRONG signal, but thats all I know.
However, in the realm of propigation and AM radio, I like to remember
anything is possible. I once heard a station on 1590khz about 300 miles
away and verified

Well,
Good evening Paul,
First of all, no one mentioning the term cheating or phoning the
station. S9+55DB is almost overload. That is one STRONG signal. 47
watts at 5 miles could not produce a signal that strong.
I have heard a many stations under 50 watts at sometimes thousands of
miles, but
So, S9 is almost as strong as it can get?
S9+55db seems excessive, maybe even an exageration even for a station if it
was on day power during the day.. but then again, I don't fully understand
the use of the S signal stuff.

Paul,
There is no limit on how strong a signal can be. Although, I have not
seen anything over S9+60 DB. To give you an example, once a signal gets
over S9+40DB, depending on how good the receiver is, the front end can
start to overload and you may get images from the strong signal. The

The S9+55DB signal on the NW ewe was after I adjusted the

Tonight KXMG signal on the omni directional H-800 skymatch

Will be nice when their CP is completed and the
Dennis,
It sounds to me that they are not dropping power allright. Even when
they are oked with 10 watts, I wonder if they will be using it?So
many stations seem to forget to drop power these days. With basically
no FCC to ride herd on them, the chances of getting caught are slim. The

Good Morning:
Trimed the pot on the ewe antenna to cut down on splatter from the SE, was
able to knock a few db off of local KXMG 1150. Their 47 watts with that single
tower still puts in a S9+55db signal, 5 miles as the crow flies.
774 JAPAN, JOUB weak at 0646 with man in Japanese.
Dennis,
Is 1150 using their 47 watts? At 5 miles and 47 watts? I doubt it. I am
5.9 miles from KAST 1370 and they are S9+50 if I am pointed at them with
a the EWE lode. I'l bet 1150 is running 5 KW when they are that strong.

Listenable reception only 5 miles away at 47 watts is quite possible!
Back out east, I could hear an 1150 with 46 watts almost 10 miles away
fairly well. Mind you, the ground conductivity was worse there then in KXMG
land. but the tower location out east was better.

Good Morning,
Just turned on the radio at 0817 ut and JOUB 774 Japan was in with a fair
signal. If you need Japan you might give it a try, they should be around
another 6 hours on the West coast. No other TPs heard with audio, HLAZ 1566
had a decent carrier.

Yeah you're right there Pat. The further north one goes, the longer the TA
window is open. I remember Brian Vernon's reports from the 70's or 80's when
he was working up in the Yukon at a mine there, of TA's and TP's he could
hear 24/7. As you say, amazing stuff. Even on the shortest day of the
Mike,
Yes, I remember the reports from Brian Vernon. Do you know what happened
to him? I have not heard anything about him in years. In Seward AK, we

was common up there in the Winter.
