[IRCA] Kchibo tries again, this time with DSP
Hi all: It looks like Kchibo is using Silicon Labs DSP chips, judging by the translated version of: http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/luohuang2007/article?mid=1144 For the D96L, it mentions that it has the antenna level and SNR readout, plus the variable fast-slow tuning of the TecsunPL-300WT, so it probably uses the same SILABS chip. It also has variable bandwidth, and looks pretty big, so it may not be an ULR. The D97L looks smaller and more modestly featured, and may be an ULR. At any rate, perhaps Kchibo will finally have a good receiver or two, since they are not actually making the receiver part :-) Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

1116 with Down Under talk, poor at 1212 utc. 738 playing music, thought it might be DU also, but it faded up better later, with woman speaking French, presumed Tahiti, hitting weak on peaks 1216 utc. Faded away to weak het by 1220--lasting a little longer today. Lots of MW hets like yesterday. Woke up a little earlier today, Radio Rossii poor on 180 and 279 1120 utc. 1710 Russian good again last night. Heard this morning too, not as well. [IRCA] Tower, transmitter site and studio photos (Dennis Gibson)
I remember waiting until 1 in the morning using my 1939 RCA 811K radio with an approx 400' LW antenna my first night AM DXing somewhere during the mid 70's, this was when KSL was a clear. I parked on 1160 and it faded up over about a 15 minute period until it was clear and audible. I ID'ed it and it slowly faded back down into the noise, this capped my first night, it was a thrill I never forgot. I have never been able to duplicate it since due to the other stations now on 1160, iBlock and just general noise. I am very dissapointed my first real DX station also now runs iBlock, it's a pity. [IRCA] Victoria TPs, 21 June 2009.
The solstice observations here (cf Bill Harms' enquiry a couple of weeks ago): Both JOUB-774 and JOHR-1287 faded up shortly after 1100UT this morning, having shown good carriers before the hour. Though mostly poor in the splatter, there were occasional fair level signals over the next half hour, with quite recognizable JJ talk on both channels. JOIB-747 made the odd appearance during the period, never more than poor level audio, but parallel with 774. Well over half the 9 kHz channels were showing weak carriers during this period, though some were DU, especially towards 1130UT. Quite good carrier levels on 279, 594, 828, 1053, 1134, 1143, 1332 and 1566, but no hope of audio. On the coast would likely have been a different story. This was using a haywired corner fed loop 23 feet vertical and 45 feet horizontal. The normal size Flags couldn't particularly drag out audio on these signals. In this case, size mattered. best wishes, Nick * Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Great photos Dennis! Alaska stations are so cool. I'd almost forgotten how great that KSL tour was a couple summers back. Bruce, That is indeed interesting, especially KAST! They have moved their studios to Warrenton now. The old building is for lease. Everything is microwaved to the separate TX sites in Seaside/Ilwaco/Astoria. The site is right behind City Hall, about a block from where I used to live in the 60s/70s. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Tecsun PL-300WT Grundig G8 AM Alignment File
Hello All, As mentioned in previous posts, the new DSP-enhanced Tecsun PL-300WT and Grundig G8 Ultralight radios have introduced outstanding selectivity to the pocket radio class, as well as unprecedented FM sensitivity. User reports have been full of praise for both models, especially regarding FM performance. Unfortunately, due to some production shortcuts at the Tecsun factory, the AM sensitivity in many models has not been optimized-- a procedure which requires matching the inductance of the loopstick coil to the value required by a varactor component in the DSP chip. Whereas some users have been satisfied with AM sensitivity in these units, others have not. The only way to ensure optimal AM sensitivity is to perform an alignment of the loopstick coil, to optimize the inductance match with the varactor. A file describing this alignment procedure has been uploaded to dxer.ca, and to the Ultralightdx and ODXA Yahoo group sites. The procedure is recommended for experienced hobbyists, and requires detail work and (typically) some patience. The benefit in weak-signal performance is worth it, however, as optimum AM sensitivity is combined with DSP-enhanced selectivity to provide the best possible DXing capability in the stock Ultralight radio class. Good luck! 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) **An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps!
