[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Asian signals were superb this morning, with variety and strength similar to an ocean coast session. Another generous enhancement produced exceptional low and mid band signals, and the new 1566-Jammer was back again to pester HLAZ on the high band. At the 1250 start of my session the primary focus was on 1566, where the Jammer and HLAZ were both strong at various times (and 1593-CNR1 was again around, at a weak audio level). The Jammer occasionally had the edge, but it was fading in and out in slightly different cycles than HLAZ's Japanese service. After 1300 both signals took their customary dive, though (as has happened on the past 4 days). After 1300 some exceptional signals started coming in from the Chinese low and mid-band stations, with 603-China (Hulun Buir?), 738-BEL2 and the 1035-CNR1 synchros all managing their best audio of the new season. There was also a Chinese-inflected voice under 657-Pyongyang's bizarre music around 1323, maybe Henan (as has been heard on the ocean coast)? 603-HLSA's Korean female host (apparently the replacement for KBS2's deep-voiced male) was also unusually strong, and both 1017-CRI and 1044-CRI joined 1035-CNR1 with fair audio in and out during sunrise enhancement. With so many obs cure Asians showing it was a wild and wacky session, and there really wasn't any time to check the usual big gun TP signals (except for 1566-HLAZ, in its fight with the Jammer). I hope everyone enjoyed the session! 603 China Hulun Buir? Chinese female speech at equal level with HLSA's music at 1314 https://app.box.com/s/qrdirqxs02e0nqa7dc9jmdrp1tvtpclu 603 HLSA Namyang, S. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22 (Conclusion)
The Japanese big guns were out in force this morning as Asian propagation continued to improve, with a generous sunrise enhancement boosting up the relatively obscure Taiwan station 738-BEL2 to its best level of the new season (fair). Despite this the usual Koreans on 558, 603, 657 and 972 seemed to be below average, with only 1053 and 1566 having much energy from that area. My session started at 1250 with the potent NHK signals described by Colin on 594, 693, 747, 774 and 828 already at serious strength in the predawn darkness, along with the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ's Japanese program. Just after 1300 the Taiwan station 738-BEL2 faded in at a threshold level with female-voiced Chinese news (in slight San Francisco splatter), and 1134-JOQR once again rode the Japanese propagation trend to a fair signal in Vancouver noise. Sunrise enhancement strengthened the Japanese even further, but the main action was on 738, where BEL2 started to strengthen over the dying splatter to a fair level around 1333. Chinese male and female conversation was followed by pop music at a fairly decent level at 1335, as the station reached its best level of the new season by far. The Japanese big guns on 594, 693 and 747 finished out the session in a strong way by sticking around until 1400, by which time all the other Asians had long since bailed. Overall it was an excellent session for late September in a lean solar year, with 738-BEL2 managing its best signal since November. 738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Male-female Chinese speech at fair level at 1335 https://app.box.com/s/od0hn3bsp2gtu1dsigmo9q62ysxactev Chinese female pop music at fair to good level at 1338 https://app.box.com/s/dl4jgwoinmdpk9tcja7vsjrgcoidsz2i 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5" loopstick C.Crane Skywave Ultralight + 15" FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

As Colin has reported the Japanese big guns were pounding in here this morning but the main star here was the Taiwan station 738-BEL2, reaching a steady fair level with Chinese conversation and pop music around 1340. It seemed to ride the same Asian coast propagation as the NHK big guns during a session which featured huge signals on 594, 693, 747, 774 and 828, Full details and MP3's will follow-- hope that you all got up for this one! 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5" loopstick C.Crane Skywave Ultralight + 15" FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

--- Begin Message --- Hello All, Asian results here this morning were almost identical to those reported by Dennis in Kalama as the low band TP's got the best of the propagation. Both the Japanese and Korean big guns were unusually potent, with 747-JOIB at a strong enough level to completely escape the 750-Portland splatter (a very rare event here). The session started off with a bang at 1250 as 594-JOAK was already in at a very good level with Japanese conversation, along with 693-JOAB, 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB and 828-JOBB. 531-JOQG made its first appearance of the new season at a fair level with Japanese conversation // 594 around 1253, while 657-Pyongyang got in its first good tirade of the season at 1312 (good strength that is, not good programming). 603-HLSA was at a steady fair level from the 1250 start time until sunrise enhancement wrapped up around 1355, while 738-BEL2 was also in and out with fair signals (through KCBS splatter) for most of the session. At times 603-HLSA had a weak Chinese co-channel, and 657-Pyongyang also seemed to have weak Chinese competition at various times (September is the peak month for 657-Henan to make an occasional appearance here). Both 693-JOAB and 747-JOIB were strong enough around 1345 to completely escape the domestic splatter from Vancouver and Portland-- the first time such an event has happened in years. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hello All, The Asian TP's this morning may have been slightly down from yesterday's session in strength and variety, but there were still some interesting signals. In this respect the situation here was a lot closer to Nick's version than Bruce's dreary report. This month's overachiever 603-HLSA was the star of the morning here, managing once again to exceed its best-ever signals (and peg the PL-380 S/N display) with a huge Korean talk fade-in around 1328 (interestingly, at exactly the same time that Nick reported it with "not so reasonable audio," although I had nothing like Nick's 603 jammer showing up). The Japanese big guns (594, 747, 774 and 828) seemed to drop off in audio somewhat this morning, but the Korean big guns on 972 and 1053 were as vibrant as ever. Some interesting signals from China showed up on the middle band, with 1017-CRI reaching good audio with Chinese music during its Korean service at 1335, and 1035-CNR1 doing the same with Chinese male talk at 1338. 657-Pyongyang was irritatingly strong with its ancient music around 1340, and 648-VOR came out of the noise with fair Chinese speech (in CISL splatter) at 1343. The Chinese station that was received on 1143 yesterday (the primary topic of conversation) unfortu! nately remained at a carrier level here this morning, although 738-BEL2 had some moments of fairly good audio around 1320. The mystery of the morning was apparent Korean speech and a "Moon River" song broadcast on 1044 kHz at 1339, all alone with no apparent co-channel. The 10 kW KBS station on 1044 has been heard here before, but never without the CRI co-channel mixing in. With 711 kHz wiped out by 710-KIRO, there is no easy KBS1 parallel audible in the Seattle area. On the other hand, it seems unlikely that 1044-CRI would play "Moon River" in a foreign service broadcast to Japan (when it typically plays Chinese music). Finally, I also heard (and recorded) the same weird music practice on 972-HLCA that Nick reported at 1336 In summary, the morning was fairly interesting, but not quite up to yesterday's exciting level. 603 HLSA Namyang, S. Hello All, Like others have reported, it was very slim pickings for Asiatic TP signals this morning as only the big guns managed any audio. In comparison to yesterday signals seemed very anemic, and you needed to be on the right frequency at the right time to hear any TP much above the noise level. Results here were very similar to Dennis' report-- 10 big gun TP's managed poor to fair audio, the best of which was 639-CNR1 (only because it rules the roost here on a clear frequency, after KFI fades out around 1335). 594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Poor-fair Japanese male conversation at 1318; best NHK signal of the morning 603 UnID Weak Chinese-sounding music around 1342; presumed to be the "new" big gun Hulun Buir 639 CNR1 China Synchros Poor-Fair Chinese YL speech at 1345 after KFI fade; clearest TP signal of the morning http://www.mediafire.com/?ixq5ab6e6xs8ocu 738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Poor strength wisps of Chinese male speech at 1348 747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Poor-fair Japanese OM speech in Portland splatter 1309 936 Anhui, China Poor strength Chinese music and speech at 1328 972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hi Walt, Thanks for the Masset report, we are all eager to read your daily TP (and TA) reports once your DXpedition team gets fully set up! This morning was fairly average for TP reception here in Puyallup, with a couple of exceptions. 1044 kHz had an interesting mix of CRI's Japanese and a co-channel (that sounded like Korean to me), but there wasn't any KBS parallel available to check at the time (and the ones that I was trying for wouldn't have worked anyway, according to Chuck :-) Dennis heard the same 1044 mix at Grayland this morning. Your European, Middle East and African TA-DX in Masset always sounds very exotic in this mediocre DXing location, from which Guy has temporarily bailed. About this time last year most of the TP-DXers were eagerly reading the daily Asian DX reports from you and Nick in Victoria, and John on Orcas Island. They are really missed, although several of us have attempted to post our own. Unfortunately, Puyallup is far from prime DXing territory, and if it were not for the bizarre 9' box loop in the back yard, I would probably be limited to receiving the same "big guns" over and over. Good luck to all of your team! 73, Gary In a message dated 9/22/2010 2:33:27 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, can...@gmail.com writes: Hi, Gary! Up here in Masset, reception was unusual here. The worst reception since last Saturday morning. The BOGs died early today, being replaced by the ALA 100 for best TP receptionthis in itself was very unusual. The big news was last night: Best TA reception since Friday night. Many, many TAs with the best for me being 1476 Cotonou (Benin, Africa) in French at almost excellent levels, but as usual for TAs this would fade rapidly up and down. Not sure which direction conditions are heading. We'll be active until Monday morning in any case. NHK2 signed off the past 2 mornings at 14:40. About 50% of the stations give an ID locally then, with the rest just a network NHK ID. Good fun! The hot TA performer is the Wellbrook array. Andy Ilkin will be pleased to hear this, although it continues to underperform in a major way in the mornings. More in the coming days! ..Walt Salmaniw, Masset, Haida Gwaii, BC On Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 9:02 PM, <_d1028g...@aol.com_ (mailto:d1028g...@aol.com) > wrote: Hello All,! It was a morning of fairly average September TP propagation here, generally following Nigel's description of the regular Asians at decent strength, but the second-tier TP stations having weaker signals. As usual, however, there were major exceptions to the script, including a strong TP mix on 1044 kHz (which Dennis also heard at Grayland, on his E100), and a bizarre S9 fade-in of 648-Voice of Russia at 1356 (after the TP propagation had apparently fizzled out, and my ICF-2010 spotting receiver had been shut off). The "best bet" Asian lineup from 639- 675 kHz (639-China, 648-VOR, 657-North Korea, 666-JOBK, and 675-Vietnam) was back to regular decent strength after some weakness yesterday, and 738-Taiwan was restored to its normal strength (along with a rough-sounding carrier). 1044 kHz was the most interesting frequency of the morning, as I heard (and recorded) the same strong TP mix that Dennis received at Grayland. Around 1348 there was a real battle on the frequency, apparently with both Korean and Japanese voices. The Japanese is undoubtedly CRI's foreign broadcast to Japan, but the apparent Korean was a mystery. I searched for a KBS parallel to check, but none were at decent strength at the time (972 and 1134 kHz were in fades). Dennis' Grayland report of pop Asian music mixing with China (in Japanese) on 1044 kHz gives additional evidence that this was probably the KBS station that we both heard, since Asian pop music is a standard KBS format. We probably won't ever be sure, but the 10 kw 1044 kHz KBS station would be an all-time new Ultralight TP catch, if confirmed by either of us in the future. Dennis, thanks again for your very useful Grayland reports! The other strange occurrence here was a full-strength fade in of 648-VOR right after the band had apparently died at 1355 (with the back yard in full sunlight). My ICF-2010 spotting receiver had already been taken inside, and I was in the process of wrapping up when I heard booming music signals on the "barefoot" SWP, which had fortunately been left on 648 kHz. I rushed over to the 9' loop and recorded an S9 signal of Russian music, right after every TP frequency had been written off as "dead." This was bizarre enough to fully awaken any half-asleep TP-DXer. The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP model (7.5" loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the back yard): 558 JOCR Kobe, Japan Fair strength with Japanese music around 1307 585 JOPG Kushiro, Japan Fair-poor with deep fades around

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hi Chuck, Thanks for the information on the 1044 KBS1 station. It sounds like the same situation as the 594-KBS1 station not being parallel with the 603 and 972 KBS stations last November, when I was trying to confirm the 594 station identity. As I recall then, you (or maybe Nick) mentioned the 711 kHz KBS1 station as the best parallel to check, a frequency which unfortunately is ruined here by oppressive KIRO splatter. If there are any other KBS1 parallels besides 711 (that are frequent visitors to the west coast), I'll happy to check them instead, if and when 1044 kHz has this TP mix again. It was the first time in Puyallup that I've ever heard strong TP competition on the frequency with CRI's Japanese, although Grayland probably has this mix very frequently. Maybe Walt or Guy (in Masset) can give a listen to 1044? 73, Gary In a message dated 9/22/2010 3:50:33 P.M. Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hi Gary - If I understand you, you were looking at 972 and 1134 to see if they were parallel to 1044. They're both KBS World Radio whereas 1044 is KBS1 and I've never heard 972 or 1134 with KBS1 programming. Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hi, Gary! More in the coming days! ..Walt Salmaniw, Masset, Haida Gwaii, BC On Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 9:02 PM, wrote: > Hello All,! > > It was a morning of fairly average September TP propagation here, > generally following Nigel's description of the regular Asians at decent > strength, > but the second-tier TP stations having weaker signals. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-22
Hello All, It was a morning of fairly average September TP propagation here, generally following Nigel's description of the regular Asians at decent strength, but the second-tier TP stations having weaker signals. The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP model (7.5" loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the back yard): 558 JOCR Kobe, Japan Fair strength with Japanese music around 1307 585 JOPG Kushiro, Japan Fair-poor with deep fades around 1309, // 594 594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Good strength Japanese conversation at 1308 603 HLSA Namyang, S.
