[JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads

2007-01-25 Thread Terry Olandese

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities and I thank
all of you for all of your help.

I'm using internet explorer 6.

The problem started Wednesday morning, the 24th, around 9 eastern.

I have been able to download things successfully in the past.

The last updates that were installed were about a month or so ago, but I'm
not quite sure what they wer. The only thing that I had noticed from that
installation was that when my outlook express compacts, I see dot bak files
files of all the folders that I have in my outlook program. Such as deletd
itemse.bak, recipes.bak, sent items.bak, games.bak, and so on. I could still
download after this installation though.

I download things from send space, just some things that people put up
there. Could I have gotten a virous from there?

The only things that i have installed in the past week was dvd audio
extracter, and winzip.

I have not reconfigured anything. I don't know how. heh heh heh.

I am using nod32, and the windows firewall which is on.

I have jaws 7.1 pro, and windows xp pro.

I can go to the internet and look around. For example, if I go to the jim
kitchens web site, I can look at all of the games he has, but when I would
try to download one of them, this is what use to happen.

Say for instence i enter on the siman game, I should come up with a dialogue
box that says do you want to open or save this, I would click on save.
Then I would come up with a box that wants to know where you want the file
to be saved to. At that point I would pick the place and enter on the
download button and the game would be downloaded.

Now, this is what's happening.
I go to kitchens site, and enter on a game that I want to download.

A dialogue box comes up that says, File download dialogue, getting file
information. It acts as though I've already selected the save option and
told it where to put the game, but I do not get that choice. Then if i let
it set there for almost a minute I get a message that says, internet
explorer can not open this file or the site can not be found.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I will gladly give someone my phone
number if they would be willing to call me, or I would call them. Thanks.

It obviously sounds like something is blocking your download manager from
connecting to the site. Now we need to figure out just what that might
happen to be. Thank you for the information as it has been helpful.

Did you do any of the things we have so far recommended, like scan for and
remove any possible spyware? Do you know what we mean by spyware? (Spyware is
another form of malware, not necessarily a virus. (It could be 'ad-ware'.)
Some spyware programs have been known to cause download problems with other
software.) Did you have any successful downloads since your recent
installation of Winzip? Did you have any problems installing Winzip? (Was it
the most recent version of the program?) You will, now, or in the future if
you don't have any at present, you need to install at least Ad-Aware and Spybot
Search Destroy, which both are anti-spyware programs that complement easch
other in terms of how they work. If you have an anti-spyware program, scan
your sysstem with it (if you have not done so before) now. I just have an idea
that if you uninstall Winzip, that might tell us whether the problem is related
to that or not. (Winzip doesn't handle files in quite the same way as your
ordinary .exe. files.) It is very poossible that you will not solve this
problem by one simple or straightforward step, so you need to think to do one
thing at a time unless you know what to do then.

Go to the start menu, settings and then control panel.
After you open the control panel, type an I until you hear, Internet
 Options and press enter.
Control tab one time to, security.
You should have 4 selections here and normally the default is on Internet.
If it doesn't say Internet, then use your left or right arrow until
 you hear it.
Tab one time to, security level. Normally this is set at medium.
Tab two more times to, reset to default and press your spacebar.
Tab to OK and spacebar again.
 Then close the control panel.

 Denny

Thanks for your help. I forgot to mention that skype works, msn
works, outlook works, and I can upload things to you send it, or send
space.
I don't think that I'm getting updates from my nod32 though. It was
giving me automatic updates, but since yesterday, I have not recieved
any updates. I did run a scan with nod, but did not come up with
anything. I also cleared cookies and internet timp files. I know I
sound like a broken record, but I'd like to resolve this problem in
case someone else has the same one, one of these days.

It obviously sounds like something is blocking your download manager
from connecting to the site. Now we need to figure out just what
that might happen to be. Thank you for the information as it has
 been helpful.

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities and
 I
 thank
all of you for all of your help.

 I'm using internet explorer 6.

The problem started Wednesday morning, the 24th, around 9 eastern.

I have been able to download things successfully in the past.

The last updates that were installed were about a month or so ago,
but I'm not quite sure what they wer. The only thing that I had
noticed from that installation was that when my outlook express
 compacts, I see dot bak
 files
files of all the folders that I have in my outlook program. Such as
 deletd itemse.bak, recipes.bak, sent items.bak, games.bak, and so on.
 I could
 still
 download after this installation though.

I download things from send space, just some things that people put
up there. Could I have gotten a virous from there?

The only things that i have installed in the past week was dvd
 audio extracter, and winzip.

I have not reconfigured anything. I don't know how. heh heh heh.

I am using nod32, and the windows firewall which is on.

I have jaws 7.1 pro, and windows xp pro.

I can go to the internet and look around. For example, if I go to
the jim kitchens web site, I can look at all of the games he has,
but when I would try to download one of them, this is what use to
 happen.

Say for instence i enter on the siman game, I should come up with a

box that says do you want to open or save this, I would click on save.

When was your last successful file download in IE; and did you do an
installation successfully after that, or did you hold off installing? When you
discovered the fault on Wednesday morning, what were you trying to download and
from what Web site?

Try deleting your History, [delete history button] which is in the dialogue
near temporary Internet Files. When asked, are you sure? say yes. Also,
again delete the Temporary Internet files so that the deletion of the Internet
History will take. (My NOD32 succesfully updated tonight, perhaps two or three
times today so far.) (When I had my similar problem with IE5.5, my antivirus
was not affected; so they might not correlate, might just be coincidence.)

Hello. When I try to download something it says file download dialog. Getting
information. Then nothing. It doesn't let me choose where I want to put the
file, and whether or not to save it or open it. I've cleared cookies, I got rid
of the timporary files, and tried to run a virus scan. I am using jaws 7.1, xp

Is this happening with several files you are trying to download, or just
from one place. I have had that happen when trying to download some
 podcasts which weren't complete.

 Take care,

[JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads

2007-01-24 Thread Flor Lynch
As I said on another list: If you have anti-spyware programs, use them and let
them delete whatever they find. Delete temporary Internet files; delete temp
files, do a disk cleanup. Have you installed another ftp client?
(Occasionally, they can break the file-download of Internet Explorer.) Have
you got RealPlayer? See if that works. Uploading/downloding of email has
nothing to do with this functionality. I've had this problem on a previous
computer, and, according to Microsoft, it's because of a third-party
application (for which they are not responsible, as they say), and associated
spyware. In the old days, Go!zilla did create such problems with Internet
Explorer. Go to

http://support.microsoft.com/

and in the edit field, type in your search terms. You will then get a list of
articles with suggested remedies.

[JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads

2007-01-24 Thread Flor Lynch
The ultimate solution, short of a drive reformat, which some people with this
problem have been driven to in the past, is to delette the index.dat file in a
locale like:

c:\Windows\temp\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5

(This has to be done carefully!) It is a last resort. If you were to delete
the wrong index.dat file... you would have a bit of a mess left over. The good
news, however, is that, correct index.dat file deleted, this particular
index.dat is re-created the next time you open Internet Explorer (which should
have been closed, of course, since .dat files are files normally in use.)

[JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads

2007-01-24 Thread Ricque

Hi Terry,
Your description of the problem is rather vague.
Can you give us some more information, that might help us better
troubleshoot the problem?
Try answering these questions:
1. What internet browser are you using?
2. When did this problem begin?
3. Were you able to download from the internet before?
4. Have you recently installed any Windows updates?
5. Have you Have you recently re-configured, or installed internet security
software?
6. Are you getting any type of error messages?
7. Do you have a firewall installed and running?
If you can give us some answers to these questions, we'll have more
information to work with.
Something about your system has had to change to cause this problem.
Let us know,
Richard Justice

[JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads

2007-01-24 Thread Flor Lynch
When did all of this start? Was it in the last couple of days? Ricque has put
forward good questions. A System Restore might, or might not, cure the
problem. However, if all it is is a firewall recently installed... that's
different, indeed, and should be easy to fix.

System Restore? Start Menu; Programs; Accessories submenu, System Tools
submenu; hit s until System Restore is highlighted. Restore my computer to
an earlier time radiobutton checked, 1 of 3, is the commonest option. Alt+n
or tab to and press enter on next. You then get a list of previous restore
points set out in a calendar. Tab through, and Hit enter on shows the
previous day button, the number of times for the number of days you want to go
back. then select a Restore Point for that day, which will be a time, with
the spacebar or left-mouse button. Then repeat the Next button manoeuvre you
did before. Let the computer do its thing for a while, and it will restart.
make sure all other programs are closed during the performance.
