Another thing you can do is to go into Control Pannel. In the search field
write the word Default. Then tab over and click on Default Programs. Then
tab to click on Choose Defaults. In a few seconds you will see a list of
all your programs. Hit the letter of the program you want to set as
you need to open a context menu on the file. then instead of clicking on open,
use open with. then it should show a list of the most common programs to use
that might be installed on your computer. if its there arrow to it then tabb to
the checkbox that says something like always use this

You may also find, as I did, that you need to change the file type combo box
to the "all files" option, the bottom of the 5 choices. Otherwise, all you
would find in your file list would be the Jarte default file format, .rtf.

Adrian, actually, .doc was not in the list, but .docx was in the list,
and it's a .docx file I'm trying to read.
Wordpad does open the file, but it's got these backslashes at the
beginning of some lines. My assumption is that those are some form of
formatting code that isn't being interpreted
Seems like a lot of work, especially if you have to do it every time.

Or are you saying there are too many backslashes in the opened document? The
way to eliminate them is to search for backslash and replace either with
