Re: [JAWS-Users] Centering text and JAWS

2010-10-18 Thread DERICK GREEFF
Hi Flor

Now you see that is exactly what I meant by getting more complicated.

In the early days of learning typing on a manual typewriter (giving away my
age) we used to do it that way. My main problem now is where the cursor is
standing once text has been centred. It says the number of the column as
one although it is somewhere in the line. It is this position I would like
to determine. I've tried all the commands provided for making sure that it
is indeed centred (it all works like a charm) but knowing on what column in
the line the first letter of the centred text is is still a mystery to me.
So, in fear of the moderator closing this subject I should rather just
believe that it is centred according to all the JAWS commands telling me so
and forget what the column number in that line is where the centred text
starts or stops.

I think we are so spoilt with JAWS allowing us to know every little detail
on the screen that it is difficult for me to accept that this one I will not
know.

Thanks again to all the listers who have given their input; it is
appreciated indeed!!!

It gets more complicated still when you include font size, and
non-proportionate fonts, which are standard, making such points less
relevant. It'll all come out fine in the printout - or, visually, the
Print Preview.

So, for a verbal or surface understanding, let's use a typewriter and
insert a sheet of A4 paper where a full line might be 60 or 65
characters in width (depending on margin settings, particularly the
right margin), and subtract the number of characters in the centred text
from 65 and then divide the remainder by two, allowing for one more
space to the right if the centred text has an odd or even number of
characters - depending on what the margin settings are. thus, where the
right margin was half-an-inch (5 spaces), the left margin 1 inch (10
spaces), you have 65 spaces (or 6.5 inches) width to play with on an A4
standard sheet of paper. If the centred text is 20 characters, it will
start from a position 22 spaces in from the left margin. (this is how we
used to do things.)

So Thus Column 1 tells you only that you are on the first column of
 text,
not your position in the actual line. But how do I then determine
 where
this text is situated in a particular line in the indicator only tells
 me
that I'm on the first column of the text; I thought this was going to
 be
simple but it gets more complicated!!!

Just as a blank line in a document is not a line filled with blanks,
centered text is not blanks plus text plus blanks. A line space
indicator is a single character, and a centering indicator is
likewise a single character. Thus Column 1 tells you only that you
are on the first column of text, not your position in the actual line.

Stinks, doesn't it?

No, you are not sounding a little thick . If you don't ask the
questions, you won't get any answers. For example; If i am wanting to
make
a message rule for the Jaws-Users list, I would check the subject

step #6 of the steps and, Jaws-Users information that is in all the
subject

Do a ctrl A to put the markers to the beginning, so you can listen to what

and try again.
Patti

hello,

1. navigate to the starting possition of the audio file that you want
to edit. this can be done one of several ways. you can use F4 or space
bar to play right from the beginning. but that would take much time.
try left and right arrows. that should take you to the closest
position of the file. you can use L to fast forward and J to revine.
2. when you get the exact starting position, hit F7 to pauce and press
left bracket to insert the start marker.
3. press F7 again to resume playback and press F7 again to pauce when
you reach the exact ending position and press right bracket to insert
finish marker. this will enclose the audio that you want to edit.
4. now press delete key. this should delete you unwanted audio portion.

hope this helps,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Centering text and JAWS

2010-10-18 Thread Flor Lynch

Derick,

that 'little detail' cannot be physically (or 'tactually') known at the
time, due to non-proportional spacing, font sizes and font point sizes,
whether bolding or underlining or italics are being used, until the
centered heading or text has been completed. You still have the
'template' of how this was formerly done, so use that as a frame of
reference or guide and trust that it, too, solves the foreseeable
problems. The printed characters are smaller than theyr former
typewritten equivalents, but the non-proportional spacing negates that
to some degree, at least in my understanding of it (which may, of
course, be flawed!) There are also margin settings in text editors and
in our word-processing programs. And for 'typing' in general now, in the
JAWS - application and/or default - Configuration manager (Set Options
Text Processing dialogue), JAWS has four Indicate newLines When:
checkboxes that may be used.

Hi Flor

Now you see that is exactly what I meant by getting more
complicated.

In the early days of learning typing on a manual typewriter (giving
away my
age) we used to do it that way. My main problem now is where the
cursor is
standing once text has been centred. It says the number of the column
as
one although it is somewhere in the line. It is this position I
would like
to determine. I've tried all the commands provided for making sure
that it
is indeed centred (it all works like a charm) but knowing on what
column in
the line the first letter of the centred text is is still a mystery to
me.

So, in fear of the moderator closing this subject I should rather just
believe that it is centred according to all the JAWS commands telling
me so
and forget what the column number in that line is where the centred
text

starts or stops.

I think we are so spoilt with JAWS allowing us to know every little
detail
on the screen that it is difficult for me to accept that this one I
will not

know.

Thanks again to all the listers who have given their input; it is
appreciated indeed!!!

It gets more complicated still when you include font size, and
non-proportionate fonts, which are standard, making such points less
relevant. It'll all come out fine in the printout - or, visually, the
Print Preview.

So, for a verbal or surface understanding, let's use a typewriter and
insert a sheet of A4 paper where a full line might be 60 or 65
characters in width (depending on margin settings, particularly the
right margin), and subtract the number of characters in the centred
text

from 65 and then divide the remainder by two, allowing for one more
space to the right if the centred text has an odd or even number of
characters - depending on what the margin settings are. thus, where
the

right margin was half-an-inch (5 spaces), the left margin 1 inch (10
spaces), you have 65 spaces (or 6.5 inches) width to play with on an
A4

standard sheet of paper. If the centred text is 20 characters, it will
start from a position 22 spaces in from the left margin. (this is how
we

used to do things.)

Just as a blank line in a document is not a line filled with blanks,
centered text is not blanks plus text plus blanks. A line space

likewise a single character. Thus Column 1 tells you only that you
are on the first column of text, not your position in the actual

 Hi again,
I have listened to the tutorial on using Partition Assistant.
Very good it is too, thanks David.
I still am not able to do what I need to do.
I have 3 partitions on the drive, C, D, and E. I wish to make the C
drive bigger.
I am able to make the D E partitions smaller or larger at will. After
making the D E smaller I do the following.

Right click the C partition and enter on re size.
I tab to the first field that says unallocated space before 0.00KB.
I then tab to the second field that says 14.65GB. I change this to 16.20.
Then tab to the field that says unallocated space after 0.00KB
Then whack enter on the OK button.
I then press Alt + F4
All that happens is the program closes.
Does the free version not work on the system drive?
I have used Partition Magic in the past but don't have it now so I
really need this one to work for me.

Thanks for any further help here.

 Hello all,

First, I'm sorry for the topic and announcement but I know many of you
are involved with Public Testing of JAWS 12 and think this is a good
opportunity for you to get an update. I'm scheduled to be on Tek Talk
tonight at 8 PM Eastern time so if you have an opportunity to drop in,
I'm sure it will be a good discussion and a chance for some questions.

Lennie,

As long as you are the user, this is not a problem. Many users have more
than one computer and they install their license on all of them.

Hi,

I have Jaws 11 the latest on my desktop and laptop computers. My
activation key is set to 3.

My question is this. I will be acquiring another desktop computer (don't
know much about it except it is running XP) from a friend who doesn't
want it anymore. Can I install my license of Jaws on a third computer
or will I be using Jaws illegally?

Many thanks in advance. Take care.

I tried shrinking my C drive yesterday and was given a message that the
resizing couldn't take place because files on the drive were in use. Was
asked if I'd like for Partition Assistant to perform after the next reboot
and I answered yes, but after rebooting, nothing happened. I suspect you
can't resize the working partition.

  Hi again,
I have listened to the tutorial on using Partition Assistant.
Very good it is too, thanks David.
I still am not able to do what I need to do.
I have 3 partitions on the drive, C, D, and E. I wish to make the C drive
bigger.
I am able to make the D E partitions smaller or larger at will. After
making the D E smaller I do the following.
Right click the C partition and enter on re size.
I tab to the first field that says unallocated space before 0.00KB.
I then tab to the second field that says 14.65GB. I change this to 16.20.
Then tab to the field that says unallocated space after 0.00KB Then whack
enter on the OK button.
I then press Alt + F4
All that happens is the program closes.
Does the free version not work on the system drive?
I have used Partition Magic in the past but don't have it now so I really
need this one to work for me.
Thanks for any further help here.
Max.

 Hi Kimmie;

Let's make sure that we are using the same versions of Jaws, running the
same operating systems, that we are both using the same email program. I
am running XPSP3 HOme, Jaws 6,10, , 11, and Outlook Express as my email
program. If we are running the same stuff, just send me a particular email
you want to make a rule for and the name of the folder you would like all of
 these emails to go into.  To forward me 1 of these emails, do the following;
 1. with the email you are going to send me highlighted, press control + F,
this is the keystroke for forwarding.
 2. In the To field, put in my email address; mb69ma...@charter.net
 3. Tab down to the edit field and press Alt + S, to send it.

If you think that you have figured out the steps go ahead and give them a
 try. Take care.

 HI Kimmie;

No, you are not sounding a little thick . If you don't ask the
questions, you won't get any answers. For example; If i am wanting
 to
   make
a message rule for the Jaws-Users list, I would check the subject
   box in
step #6 of the steps and, Jaws-Users information that is in all the
   subject
lines of messages that come to this particular list. The info you
 would
   use
 for this list is
[JAWS-Users] , read what is between the quotes character by
 character
   to
get an idea of what I'm suggesting. This particular info would be
   entered
in step 11 of the steps.

Now, if you are wanting to use the info in the from field, you
 would
check the from box in step #6. Then in step #9 you would arrow
 down
   to
Where the the from line contains people or something like that
 and
   press
 enter.

Making these rules depends on what criteria you are using, from what
   field /
header in the email. Making these can be a major pain in the you
 know
   where
and they can be veryy confusing. I started seeing Dr. Phil long
 before
   I
got to message rules but, message rules took my temporary treatment
 into
 eternal treatment! LOL

I hope this has helped to explain things a little better to some
 degree
   and
didn't confuse the hell out of you even further. LOL

 Take care.

 Mike

What do you mean put the name of the subject line in the email?
it's just that not all my emails have proper subject lines in them.
   They
might have the name of an artist, or something like that. Sorryif I

I mean after he deletes what he wants.
Then he can listen to it before he saves it.

Patty, that would take him to the beginning of the entire file, not to
the

beginning of the section he wants to edit.
You're close Patty but not quite there.

I would add one more thing to this
Do a ctrl A to put the markers to the beginning, so you can listen to
what
you deleted. If it isn't right you can use ctrl z to undelete what you
did

and try again.
Patti

hello,

1. navigate to the starting possition of the audio file that you want
to edit. this can be done one of several ways. you can use F4 or space
bar to play right from the beginning. but that would take much time.
try left and right arrows. that should take you to the closest
position of the file. you can use L to fast forward and J to revine.
2. when you get the exact starting position, hit F7 to pauce and press
left bracket to insert the start marker.
3. press F7 again to resume playback and press F7 again to pauce when
you reach the exact ending position and press right bracket to insert
finish marker. this will enclose the audio that you want to edit.
4. now press delete key. this should delete you unwanted audio portion.

hope this helps,
ashoka weerawardhana.
